CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tommy (Tommy Morrison) tries to celebrate his victory, but gets attacked by the press and remains stuck in Rocky's shadow.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Touted upon its release as the finale of the Rocky saga, this fifth entry in the long-running series of sports dramas reunites star Sylvester Stallone with John G. Avildsen, director of the Oscar-winning original. Stallone is Rocky Balboa, suffering from career-ending brain damage as a result of his punishing bout with Ivan Drago at the finale of the previous film. Upon their return to Philadelphia, Rocky and his wife, Adrian (Talia Shire), discover they are broke, their fortune squandered by an incompetent accountant. Forced to move back to their working-class neighborhood, Rocky finds that his only asset is the run-down gym willed to him by Mickey (Burgess Meredith, who appears in new flashback sequences). Resisting big money offered to him by Don King-like boxing promoter George Washington Duke (Richard Gant), Rocky becomes a trainer and finds a talented comer in Tommy Gunn (real-life boxer Tommy Morrison, nephew of John Wayne). @@D33Lux It is a decent movie but the other movies had Rocky overcoming adversity like going the distance against Apollo in the first, winning the title for Adrain in the second, proving his title reign was real by beating the number one contender in the third, avenging the death of Apollo in the fourth and "the stuff in the basement" in the last film. Him reconciling with his son at the end of the film wasn't as fulfilling in my opinion.
@TheJking85
@TheJking85 7 жыл бұрын
The reporters were right to criticize Tommy Gunn. Tommy beat bums, cans and popsicle sticks to get to the belt. Rocky, on the other hand, had to beat beasts and MONSTERS to win and retain the belt (i.e. Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago). Tommy gets less respect because his road to the title was too easy. As opposed to Balboa, whose road to the title was hard, brutal, and dangerous! Had Gunn stuck with Rocky, he would have become the GOAT in the future and built himself a solid legacy in boxing. But instead he took the easy way out with Duke and wound up a jackass instead.

@Artisan1979
@Artisan1979 3 жыл бұрын
The big difference between Rockies route and Tommy's route was that Mickey did this to protect Rocky for the right reasons. He saw Rocky as a son and saw what he had gained through blood sweat and tears. He wanted to make sure that he didn't wind up an invalid or even paralyzed from a fight gone bad. After years in poverty, Rocky finally made it and all Mick wanted to do was ensure that nothing went wrong and that he would still be there for his wife and son at the end of the day. And of course that strategy caused Rocky to lose his edge, so it became detrimental as opposed to beneficial. In the end, Mickey just wanted to protect Rocky. That was him being a father figure. Tommy, however, was under the sway of a fight promoter who didn't give a damn unless he could make a buck off of Tommy. Moving fighters around like they were pawns on a chessboard. There is no doubt that duke bribed Caine to take a fall. He even said so in the limo when he laid out the ground rules. He fights when Duke tells him, where Duke tells him, and how Duke tells him. And I'm pretty sure overtime Tommy would find himself in that very same predicament. Duke overplayed his hand when he orchestrated this title match. The press had every right to critique what obviously was a rip off. The fact that Duke was trying to steer the narrative makes him very culpable even if Tommy is not that bright to catch on himself. I wouldn't be surprised if Duke had a few of those reporters in his pocket to stoke the fire and make Tommy emotionally vulnerable enough for further manipulation into challenging Rocky to a fight. But after Tommy dropped Rocky like a bad habit for not coming with him on the easy route to the top, I don't feel that sorry for him.

Richard Gant's natural performance of an arrogant greedy opportunistic cunning and sly boxing middleman and facilitator was state of the art it seemed so real and genuine. Can imagine to some extent what Don King used to do with boxers just like here. For me the best performance in Rocky v is Richard Gant undoubtedly without batting an eyelid.
