In the book, he takes like 1 hour explaining his morning routine. It is obsessive.

@bluekep77403 жыл бұрын
@@every_username_is_taken I actually like those contrasting bits from the book. Book Patrick thinks about murder in the same vapid and extremely specific detail as he does Joe Cocker's career, or his own morning and workout routine. While you read about the morning routine, you are understandably bored, when you read about the murder, you are understandably horrified. To Patrick, it's all the same, but to us non-insane readers, it's a wild shift that seems to come from nowhere. I actually think the boring parts elevate the horrifying parts even though they are written almost exactly the same way.

DiCaprio is a fine actor, to be sure...but he'd have been a lousy choice to play Bateman. His style of acting is more demonstrative, loud, even over-the-top. Bale tends to play things at the other end of the spectrum: cold, aloof, detached, at times virtually flat-lining emotionally. These being qualities/affectations that define a soulless, self-absorbed, and narcissistic character like Patrick Bateman. Little wonder that "American Psycho" was his breakout performance. I think it allowed him to play to his strengths as an actor to a degree that if one didn't know any better, it wouldn't be hard to believe it was written with him in mind.

the focus in both the movie and in the book, is very much on material status. we see it here in this scene, long explanations of everything he´s wearing/ using, especially the brand if it´s clothes, accessories and such. heck at one point he´s stuffed a body in a overnight bag and is loading the bag in a car trunk, and someone he knows spots him and starts talking to him, and he´s like " ohh shit" and the person looks at the bag ( and it´s clearly not a set of golf clubs that´s in there) and the person just compliments on how the nice the bag is.

psychopath are just an excuse to give somebody a bad reputation, just because somebody is different from others does that really make somebody bad
@thirtydaysveganandcounting2 жыл бұрын
Psychopaths are just people who lack empathy for others and do not understand the consequences of their actions. They don't generally have a plan of action but act highly impulsively with little thought. Most psychopaths don't live normally because they are prone to committing crimes with no regard for their actions and are prone to fits of rage. Edit: This was the description for a sociopath, wrote this on like no sleep. Psychopaths ARE emotionally manipulative, more rational and more in control of emotions. They still have a lack of empathy.

I like his first line more. Mentioning that he lives in an expensive apartment before he even mentions his name. I live in the slums on West 82nd Street, on the ground floor. My name is Rico Suave. I'm 29 years old. I believe in taking care of myself, and a balanced breakfast and sometimes I do some push-ups. In the morning if my face is a little puffy, I'll call into work sick and do more push-ups. I can do seven now. After I remove myself from society, I use a hand sanitizer from Walmart. In the shower, I use an old bar of soap. With a loofah. And on the face, that same bar of soap.

Bale's maturity & brilliance in this role are not that surprising if you know a little bit about Bale's life. Christian had very unusual parents and upbringing, his family has seen quite a few things. This means that the child has contact with various, exciting people and different environments from the beginning, and can analyze the entire spectrum of human behaviors. His grandfather was an RAF pilot, and his father, who was born in South Africa, for a time a commercial pilot, then he had his own businesses, then he was also an activist in various fields. The whole family moved around the world and had a nomadic lifestyle. Christian's mother was a circus dancer and clown. Christian grew up in a circus. Bale almost NEVER talks about it, but he did maybe 2-3 times, including a few years ago, at the time of the Vice movie premiere, on the HappySadConfused movie podcast, and it was fascinating to listen to him talk about his life in a circus!! In a circus you have contact with acting all the time, it's all about performance, and you live with interesting people who know life. Acting appears to be Bale's destiny. He simply changed one circus for another, one stage for a larger and more spectacular one - the world of film and Hollywood!!

I'm reading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis and I have to say that I can only see Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman when I read the book. That only goes to show, in my eyes at least, just how Christian Bale nailed the character in the movie. Its amazing. The book was very controversial when it was released in 1991. It was hated on by people like Gloria Steinem (Christian Bale's step mom in real life) for how it portrayed women and how shallow Wall Street Yuppies were. But now, thirty years later, American Psycho is considered a masterpiece both as a novel and as a movie. Damn, it even has a friggen musical with Matt Smith as Patrick Bateman. This only goes to show that if you truly believe in what it is you are making and if you stick with it then one day it will be appreciated.
