In Nicolas Roeg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel The Witches, a young boy is vacationing at the seaside with his grandmother when he discovers that the hotel he is staying at is hosting a convention of witches. Eavesdropping on the witches, he learns that the Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston) has devised a plan to turn all of the children in England into mice. Angelica Huston is brilliant. It was a no-brainer to cast her as Morticia Adams and to this day is my favorite rendition of that character. She is so awesome here, like a superstar. All the while some seemingly humorous music plays as if the audience is one of the witches and not seemingly watching a rather horrific transformation of Bruno into a mouse that in the final "before totally feral" form is super freaky/nightmare inducing.

This is exactly the style of film-making that's most likely to horrify and haunt children when they are young and impressionable. The lurching, swaying camera, the dutch angled shots, the use of POV for the hiding child, not to mention the comic and yet horrific effects used on Bruno's transformation: the nauseous colors and hissing gas, and the close-ups of hooting, grinning witches. Nick Roeg absolutely nailed the tone of the book. If they hadn't screwed up the book's ending, this would be the best Dahl on film.
