FILM DESCRIPTION:
A high-profile slaying becomes the case of an ambitious attorney's career in this legal thriller based on the novel by William Diehl. Richard Gere stars as Martin Vail, a famed defense lawyer who volunteers his services to Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton), a Kentucky teenager charged with the murder of a Chicago archbishop. Covered with blood, Aaron was captured after a foot chase broadcast live on TV, making a gleeful Vail certain that he could raise his profile by defending the obviously guilty suspect. Assigned to prosecute is Assistant District Attorney Janet Venable (Laura Linney), who is Vail's ex-girlfriend. Vail's case becomes more complicated than he expected when a psychologist, Dr. Molly Arrington (Frances McDormand) concludes that Stampler suffers from multiple personality disorder. ***** Yeah mate, this proves how partial the board of Academy Awards are towards some actors, especially some female leads who suck them off! For an example, apart from Norton, Di Caprio, Fassbender and many more, Russel Crowe was outstanding for his acting in A Beautiful Mind, even better than his acting in The Gladiator, however he was robbed of the award as he had some issues with the board. Jenifer Connolly instead won the Oscars, even though it wasn't anything special. Russel Crowe would have won the Oscars on consecutive years. However he was robbed of it and he never won even a nomination after that!

"Leading the witness" is trying to get the witness to say or act a certain way just to get what you want, whether it's true or not, whereas I think "Badgering the witness" is using aggressive or repetitive language to get them to say or do what you want. I am not a law student though, so I may be wrong.

For reference a leading question is "Isn't it true you were at the bar that night?" or "You knew he was angry that day, didn't you?". The open hostility she shows here would likely be reined in by a real judge however, but this is just a movie so artistic license and all that. I don't believe she was the one to call him as a witness so her role would be that of cross examination in this scene, in an attempt to rebut the testimony he provided for Gere's character.

Yes! It's one of my favorite monologues ever. She's projecting a lot of her own frustrations onto Aaron's situation after she's had to deal with so much corruption and chauvinism the whole film, and probably her whole life. Her anger there is real and cathartic, and it seems to even catch herself off guard. Plus it's just excellent writing as she describes all the specific violent things Aaron did and makes it sound justified.

Marty tells him "you're way ahead of the game" [the game of making people believe you're innocent] and for a brief, fleeting moment, the real aaron chuckles KNOWING how true that was.

Laura linney is Amazing. That is my favorite scene from all movies. I'm also fond of the scene from aliens when Ripley and the queen of the aliens get into the fight at the end of the movie.
