ONE FALSE MOVE 4K UHD REVIEW + one of my videos has been pirated by another YouTuber

This was a film I don't believe I had ever even heard of but after a recent email from HMV which featured it I looked it up and largely owing to Bill Paxton appearing in the starring role I invested the £29.99 asking price during a visit to the Swindon branch of HMV a few weeks ago. I think it is one of the best films I have seen this year so it was quite a welcome surprise. Criterion have issued this one and that is why it costs just a penny less than £30.
Image aspect ratio is 1.85:1. Sound is matrixed four-track Dolby Stereo but the box appears to claim DTS-HD. Running time in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Hi John, sorry to hear about your video being stolen. I can understand why you'd want to take a break for a while. Just wanted to spread a bit of encouragement: you are by far my favorite movie reviewer. Most channels just offer a straight-up review of the 4K or blu-ray disc with a brief comment about the film itself, and maybe some details about the transfer. What makes your channel so unique is that you give the audience a comprehensive overview of the film's history through the theatrical release, and then home media release. The 4K/ blu-ray quality itself isn't mentioned until the tail end of the review. That's what I love about the channel---I'm not just being told how good the transfer looks, but why I should care about how good the transfer looks. No one else offers such a wonderful experience. Either way, I hope this helps encourage you to keep on going in your own time!

Very kind of you. I'll get over this latest setback but I can't help thinking how widespread this practice is and if anyone is impersonating me on other platforms. I've only stuck with KZbin up to now to minimize this sort of kick in the teeth. By the way, I started this channel because I couldn't find anyone reviewing discs who knew anything about film. A cine to video transfer opinion is worthless without at least some knowledge. Most of the end quality comes down to the mastering but I don't think anyone else doing reviews understands that... yet. Your in depth videos are a real treat, you are very passionate and knowledgeable about the history of film releases. You actually know what you're talking about and you do so with intelligence and integrity. I really enjoy them. As for One False Move, I saw this at the Duke Of Yorks cinema in Brighton in the very early nineties. It may have been shown after it's initial release, so I would hazard a guess it may have been 1992 or 1993. So glad you watched this hidden gem and I hope we see you again very soon!

@@KeepYaHeadUpTS I keep trying to quietly cajole Keith at Euphoria into getting a video projector because projection is cinema. It would be a big help to his channel because however good a telly is, it's not cinema. A drop down screen (now that he's completely covered the end wall) would make a big difference and with that big image it's easier to tell the difference in quality between discs.

Just something about it that makes it extra special... and to be able to do that in your home with the quality of 4K... mindblowing! John I too was unfamiliar with this film until Criterion released it last year. I bought the 4k not long after release after overwhelming rave reviews. I like it and will keep in collection, but it's not a top tier title for me, maybe I'll grow to like it more after couple more viewings in future. Agree that the 4k transfer is top notch. I have The Fugitive on just about every format starting with Super 8, LaserDisc, VHS and DVD. I will get the 4K one day just to see if it holds up to the fabulous Super 8 print. John.

That was such a great film. I picked it up here in the US during one of the Barnes & Noble 50% Criterion sales. I haven’t watched this it was released on VHS years ago in the 90s. I'll get over it. I was having a look on the HMV web store earlier to see if there was another possible masterpiece hiding away like One False Move that I haven't seen yet but alas, nothing jumped off the screen. I do still find I want to get over to see Simon Nicholls for an Alien double-bill because he has a 35mm of Aliens and I have Alien Resurrection. A 4K review of Aliens judged against a 35mm general release print has got to be done. Might still be a way off though. John.

Fancy thinking a film like this, One False Move, was only suitable to go straight to video. I suppose it was a little ahead of its time but something of this quality today would surely be a big hit by modern standards (i.e. tiny cinema auditoriums playing to smaller audiences). Hi John! When you have BB Thornton writing you know it's gonna be good and lot's of his work you see Bill Paxton (RIP). A Simple Plan comes to mind . Billy is just an exceptional writer but most of us here know this. I also havn't seen this so this review has it going up high on the list of films to get to quick hahah. Like most I hear you closely and certainly hope you decide to continue in spite of what happened. Hmmm on second thought if you even think of quitting there will be a revolt here lol... Barry Norman was great when he got behind a film but all too often he was so disparaging. Hopefully, I'll never slip into that sort of mode of wanting to destroy a film's chances. One False Move is one of the best films I've seen this year. Probably the best of any film I haven't seen previously so far this year. Sorry about what happened with the video, John. I hope you continue to make content despite this. People can be very greedy and dishonest. When you talked about the 2.0 surround track and how modern receivers and soundbars might have trouble with it, that reminded me that I was trying to figure if my receiver was decoding a 2.0 surround track on one of my criterions correctly the other day. It’s a newer receiver with atmos and when I go through the decoding options it doesn’t have Dolby Pro Logic. It only has Dolby Surround which is apparently what replaced Pro Logic. So I don’t know if it’s actually decoding correctly but I think I’m just going to keep the decode on auto and hopefully thats fine. Apparently my receiver has something called surround AI that I didn’t even know was on until the other day and I turned that off because I’m not really a fan of an original audio mix being messed with.

Thank you Sean. Dolby Surround was the first more than two channel stereo sound for the home so it's possible your decoder is putting the soundtrack into that older format. If the dialogue is fixed down the centre channel then that's an indication it's true Dolby Stereo (aka ProLogic). John.

That's a good point Andy - perhaps a few people watching this video will keep an eye out for me. I do let people use bits and pieces if they ask but this was different. The funny thing is, there's a chap making a documentary about the former Bristol IMAX and he hasn't been able to get into any of the three remaining IMAX houses in the UK so asked if I'd help his with the videos I've already shot. At first I had to think if he'd misunderstood what I said but quickly established it wasn't him. One False Move is brilliant. £30 isn't cheap but I feel it is one of the best 4K purchases I've made this year. I've since seen that it was released here in November last year. John.

I hope that thief hasn't upset you too much, John. All I can say you're in good company as this happens across KZbin with successful channels. Please don't take it personally, although I can understand how heartbreaking it must be. I suspect they just searched Oppenheimer videos on KZbin because they knew they'd get more views. Yours unfortunately fell into that rather than your channel being targeted. That said even if they did run your stuff, you'll always have lots of people who love your work and know to come to the Movie Collector channel. So the fans would never be fooled. Your channel is a fantastic home of film presentation knowledge in the videos and comments sections. And it'd be a massive shame for it to stop. I decided to buy not only UHD, but a video projector from watching your videos, and these and questions of mine you've answered have been invaluable in this. I couldn’t have done it without that. I also love hearing your stories of film reel watching in the 1980's and 90's, as this was something I was only able to dip my toe into at the time due being a child then and not having much money. Great video John, I've had my eye on this film/disc for awhile now (I think it did come out last year). I'm a huge fan of the late, great Bill Paxton and find it hard to resist anything he's in. Well the price helped give me pause! Good to know the film is as good as I'd hoped. Maybe I'll get it on my Christmas list... Regards that stealing ofyour video, well the world is full of jerks mate, try not to tale it to heart. Like many here I always geta buzz when I see you've posted a new video, and even my wife joins in settling down to watch each one. I don't always agree with your findings etc but I always thoroughly enjoy them and your infectious enthusiasm. Do keep it up. It makes all the money i spend on discs seem normal (most everyone i know just streams stuff now and thinks buying discs is for the birds. We know better!).

Evening Ian (and wifey!). It seems that One False Move was released over here last November. Why didn't we hear about it then? Someone must have mentioned it to me but somehow I didn't get a copy. It's so good that if I do an end of year top releases I think I'll find a way to include it because there aren't many that have been as enjoyable. And it looks just like a 35mm film too so that always helps. It might be on sale sometime so maybe keep an eye out for a deal because one or two have told me they got their copies half price in America. I'll get over this piracy thing. It's like a punch in the stomach when you first find out about something like that. I've had it before only much more serious when a DVD I'd created and had pressed at Sony Labs in Austria was pirated. The difference was that I caught the offender that time but there's no hope of that with KZbin. John.

Great video as always. I may take a look at One False Move. Please do not let the actions of one stupid individual stop you from making your videos. The reviews are great, extremely informative and well balanced. When you get the chance, take a look at Elvis starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Butler’s performance is spot on as is the attention to detail. Keep up the good work.

I’ve had online courses I produce for my business that are sold via Udemy appear on KZbin from some unscrupulous character. The latter have been very good at removing it. I was watching an interview with the motoring journalist Chris Harris that someone actually ripped his content then came up to him and said thank you as the chap was making money. Cheek or what! A genuine surprise that I had no expectation of doing a review video but it was so good and it had the added benefit of allowing me to talk about what happened with the IMAX video which I think has helped me get over it a little more. Funny, I recently picked this up by the same way you did. Heard about it, watched a trailer, bought it. It was pretty good. Bill Paxton is just a joy to watch in anything really. I took the same punt on another film from criterion’s 4k stuff called Lone Star. That was also pretty good, but I think I preferred One false move over that. In regard to your video being stolen you could try to mitigate stuff like that by adding a watermark of your channel name somewhere while the video plays. Don’t let it get you down, it’s part of posting anything on the internet really. Some bellend will always try and pass it off as their own at some point. There are always ways around it.

I'll have to see if I can do something that doesn't spoil the overall feel of [hopefully] a relaxed talk about a film in a miniature picture palace. I already have watermark for the subscribe option so I don't want to overdo it but it's worth a try. Maybe it's something just for the special videos like when I'm in a projection box. John.

Keep going John. Your videos are very informative and enlightening on the technical aspects of cinema. While I don’t always agree with your film reviews (Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny is awful John, come on!), I can’t fault the breakdown of a disc’s picture and sound in in your reviews and even help whether to shell out for those 4Ks, especially those at a higher price end (eg: Second Sight’s The Hitcher boxset). Plenty of videos I want to thank you for is the one on how cinema’s work (more than push the play button), the IMAX insights and the video on True Lies and the controversy with the 4K. Keep up the fantastic work.

Evening Ben. I like Dial of Dross. That doesn't mean to say it's a good film but I like it and that's good enough for me. A lot of others like it too and I think you may find that you will start to see it differently as the years go on. It's been a lot of fun doing this channel but there are sometimes a few too many 'downs' to go along with the 'ups'. Universal objecting to me using the Jaws trailer to demonstrate how the 'Scope lens works was another downer but there have been others. I usually get over them pretty quickly. John.

Unfortunately, John, there are unserious, creepy people and scammers in the world. But, fortunately, as you say, KZbin actually alerted you to what was happening and you were able to put a stop to it immediately. It would have been substantially worse if scammers were able to pirate/profit from your videos on KZbin without you knowing about it. When it comes to the question of why bothering doing this: I claim that what you do here with the Movie Collector channel matters to other people, and I think the fact that you have 28.8K subscribers is a testament to that claim. Thank you Erik. The twerp who ripped my video off clearly had no ability to edit as it was the complete video with no attempt to disguise it other than a different thumbnail and title. Even my Movie Collector opening was there. It makes me wonder how many other videos are out there which are edits of my videos because there is no reliable way of finding out. This one was only discovered because it was so blatant that KZbin automatically picked it up. Several people have suggested putting a watermark on my videos and I think that's something I should do for the more special, out and about videos in the future. John.

I know it can be disheartening, but don’t let a solitary scumbag dissuade you, John. I had a similar thing happen with a film booklet I wrote back in 1994. A couple of years ago I noticed someone was selling it as a Kindle download on Amazon! I reported copyright infringement and although it took a couple of weeks for them to do something about it, Amazon discontinued it. Your videos are among my most favourite on KZbin, it would be very sad to see you stop.

I had it with my first ever sell-through, glass mastered DVD years ago Tim. The pirater then turned out to be the agent who had arranged the pressing of the discs which was more shocking than I can put into words. It was quite an investigation to find the culprit but when we worked it out I was crushed. Still, I sorted the bugger out alright! He was an employee... or at least, he was until the weekend was over and I contacted his boss on the Monday morning. John.

I can't recall ever having seen To Kill A Mockingbird singin but I do know the film pretty well. Gregory Peck in the courtroom and his family life at home as I recall. No doubt that was a nitrate 35mm black and white shoot so it's going to look pin sharp with the deepest, velvety blacks. John.

I actually have the 4K of the original film sat up there awaiting me. I did think I'd get up to the BFI IMAX to see the sequel as they have one of the few 15/70 prints in the world but I can't seem to generate enough enthusiasm right now. Lady Gaga has been excellent in the two previous films I've seen her in so you never know. I'd expect the film to be crap so that might be the right attitude to go in with. John.
