"That's the worst possible ending I can imagine." I was thinking, "No. It's not. Just wait." And then you called it. It's the ultimate tragic irony that he didn't help Melissa McBride's character because he needed to put his son's safety first, but if he and his son had only gone with her, his son would probably still be alive. We have Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale Horvath) to thank for Melissa McBride's reappearance at the end of the film. According to Frank Darabont, the cast and crew were so impressed with her performance that they gave her a standing ovation. Later on, DeMunn was talking to Darabont and said he couldn't stop thinking about her and wondering what happened to the character. DeMunn then suggested making her one of the survivors (along with her two kids) that we see in the truck at the end. This movie is also why they called and offered her the role of Carol, without asking her to audition. Also, spoilers for the The Walking Dead's pilot episode...the actor playing the soldier they stabbed and threw out into the mist is also connected to TWD. He was the soldier-walker in the tank at the end. Apparently, Darabont was planning to do a Season 2 flashback episode told from that soldier's point of view, showing how he eventually became the walker in the tank. But then Darabont was fired, and that plan was scrapped. This is a very underrated movie that tackles a lot of heavy themes. Thanks for reacting to it and sharing your thoughts!

I'm just here for your reaction to the ending. You did not disappoint. 😁 Fun Fact: Frank Darabont agreed to make the film with Dimension only under the condition that no matter what, they wouldn't change the scripted ending. They agreed.

Oh boy, this one was good, and rough. As you've surely heard by now, Stephen King didn't conceive the end of this movie. His version ended with them driving off into the unknown mist after seeing the titanically huge monster towards the end. But, once he read the ending they came up with, he praised it and said he would have written it himself had he thought of it.

The ending in this film is different from the book. It's rare for Stephen King to praise film adaptations of his books; let alone prefer the ending of the film, to the ending of his own book! he actually tends to praise movies based on his books often, and he often points out when they’re better than the movie. He didn’t like The Shining and he didn’t like Firestarter but that’s about it. He was very agreeable with all other productions. He loved Carrie, Salem’s Lot, Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, the new IT movies (for some reason i can’t imagine) , the two different mini series for The Stand. He’s usually very supportive of films, he just thought Stanley Kubrick was a disrespectful a-hole who didn’t find any of the warmth or love the Torrance family has for each other in the book. And he just thought Firestarter was boring, which he admitted was funny because it’s almost a one-to-one adaptation of the book. One of the most literal and direct adaptations of his book ever.

Interesting thought- Mrs Carmody wants to sacrifice David’s son to stop the monsters. And as soon as he dies, the mist disappears and salvation arrives. Ollie dies right after killing Mrs Carmody, who even takes on a Jesus pose as she dies. Some very interesting connections

There are a total of 8, actually - Darabont is known for collaborating with people on multiple projects, so it is no surprise that many of the same actors are in The Mist and The Walking Dead, as he worked on these projects back to back. Actors who are most widely known that star in both include Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Jeffrey DeMunn and Juan Gabriel Pareja. Additional names tied to both include Julio Cesar Cedillo, Sam Witwer, Tiffany Morgan and Cheri Dvorak. Many crew members also worked on both projects including Walking Dead director and SPX guru Greg Nicotero who worked on creature effects for the film. Another interesting Walking Dead connection is that Kelly Collins Lintz, mother of Madison, Matt and Macsen, who all star in TWD, portrayed David’s (Jane) wife Stephanie.

I hope these "as we go" helps 1. In context it is similar to what King did with The Stand except in this case it's monsters and not a virus. 2. Jeffery DeMunn is known as a favorite of director Frank Darabont, who has cast him in all four of his films: "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "The Green Mile" (1999), and "The Mist" (2007). All King adaptations. He was also in what King himself says is the best adaptation of his work. "Storm of the Century". 3. William Sadler also was in Shawshank and The Green Mile. 4. Frances Sternhagen was in "Misery" by King. 5. Marcia Gay Harden kills it. She's as demented as Margaret Carrie's mom in "Carrie". 6.The big guy that goes out with the rope around his waste was going to be another King cameo doing that role himself. 7. This is not how the book ends. Darabont wanted this ending. King later said that as horrific that it is he likes better than his.. 8. Stephen King. You're welcome.

Stephen King’s story was written to be in the style of a 50’s black and white monster movie. Frank Darabont wanted to release the film in black and white but the studio shut it down. They also offered him a much higher budget if he would change the ending, but he refused. The Blu-ray set does have a black and white version which I think fits much better.

In King's novella, they drive out into the mist in search of a safe haven that may or may not exist. The director changed it, and Stephen King himself, a vocal fan of Darabont's revised ending, described it as "the most shocking ending ever," and said, "there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last 5 minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead."

I loved your reaction, and plan to see your other videos soon. As for the movie here is my opinion: (I stopped the video right before the movie ends so i wrote my opinion before hear your thoughts) The movie wasn't even about the monsters or huge alien creature. It was about the same thing that Steven King like to revolve his novels around, it is "The religious side" 1 - The Shawshank Redemption: Was about hope but also at the same time shows how the Worden done crimes behind the religious cover or bible verses, how he cheated on the true beliefs and cursed it at first moment. 2 - The Green Mile: It was about a what to do if you know the truth about something and kept silent about it sure you eventually will get the punishment. And it may be appear as a reward but in fact it's not. As he him self said it clear at the end. 3 - The Mist (our movie): This movie is very complicated because of it dealing with 4 types of people that get sheltered at the general store: First: the rational one who thinks calmly and try to act normal so that he can take the right decisions, and this one he can easily be the leader and giving commands, and refuse to involve the religious into the matter of taking decisions. (This kind can be religious but knows the the religion not interfere with life and death situations) Second: The normal person that easily follow the FIRST type, and in the same time hate to hear religious things while it's time to make a life alter decisions, and defend the leader as he see that he is the right man to get out of this situation with the least casualties. Third: The Opposite of the First type, and this type has thoughts can be just chaotic. Superstitious, religious and Crazy personalities. Remorselessly type. Do what ever takes even if is against the morals and manners. No right and wrong rule, just what their crazy beliefs told them. No shame and dark side in their emotional personality makeup. Fourth: The opposite of the second type, and this type can easily be called the horde, that horde is just brainless people like the zombies. Just follow what they being like the sound or the smell. And this type is the majority of what we seen in the movie. As the movie showed us, that horde kicked out what they called the sinners or who refused to get onboard the religious side. All what happened just because the inside crash between those types. Definitely if there was no type 3 in the store, all of them can get out with the minimum casualties and hold their position very tight and organized everything till the end of the Mist. But the inner war destroyed everything and made some people killed each other. And even forced 6 of them into unplanned escape that ended in very brutal dark way. And i think if i were in Thomas jane character posion, first thing i would plan and get to do, i would kill everyone involved in kicking me and my son out of the safe heaven which keep us safe somehow. I would kill everyone who follow the stupid crazy superstitious lady.

The most interesting question of the whole film is; which are the bigger monsters, the humans or the actual monsters themselves? The fabric of the whole thing we call "civilization" is actually very thin. Just remove the basic sense of comfort and safety from the people, and the forces of chaos will soon rise its head. If you scare peopke enough, you'll get them to believe in just almost anyone or anything, that offers an explanation or certainty in the midst of chaos, no matter how insane the very same thing may gave sounded twhen things still were normal. Thats why ms Psycho got followers that fast, because she was able to offer a clear explanation for the fucked up situation. And even more dangerously, actually believed in her own thing as well.

This movie was always envisioned by Darabont in black and white. That's the way he wanted it from the start and apparently lots of pre-planning was done with that in mind. Then the studio heads said no way are we releasing this in the theaters like that so they got what they wanted and color it was. The cgi that was used wasn't even the greatest for the time even. Once the home release was being talked about Darabont finally got to bring his original vision somewhat to life in a directors cut. The creature design/cgi, locations, and vibe, are all heightened in that version and it's a shame the movie wasn't completely designed around it. Watch the "there's something in the mist" scene in black and white and you'll see what I mean. No idea why that version hasn't been turned into an automatic have to watch especially when this version was basically studio interference.
