Tanner is not a rat, he's MI6's Chief of Staff, who sometimes is a bit too much "by the book". The character will return in all of the next 3 Craig Bonds, again played by Rory Kinnear. The character also appeared in 2 of the Brosnan Bond movies, albeit played by a different actor. The influence of the Bourne franchise on this movie went so far, that they hired Christopher Rouse as the co-editor, who also was the editor for both of the Paul Greengrass-directed Bourne movies (Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum) and they also went for Dan Bradley as the 2nd Unit / Action scene director, who did the same on "Bourne Ultimatum". Sadly, because you're watching the Craig Bond movies first, you're gonna miss so much of the easter eggs and callbacks to the classic Bond movies, of which the Craig Bonds have many (especially "No Time To Die"). Let's see if you recognize them later when watching the classic ones! 😉

Kinnear is also the son of the late actor Roy Kinnear, best known for playing Mr. Salt in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and several of Richard Lester's films (the last on which, "The Return of the Musketeers," he died during filming after sustaining an injury).

Jacqui! This film was finished during a writers strike, and may seem to suffer a bit from that. As well as the influence of the "Bourne effect" that seemed to plague films at the time. I'd love to know your thoughts on how a production deals with writers being absent from set for rewrites, and such. How much does a writer work with the director *during* the production? That that absence would adversely affect the production? This *might* be the least liked of the Craig films, but I find it incredibly important, as it carries the story forward. There have been 'rights' issues with EON productions over 50 years, and this 5 film series reflects that. Thanks for your reaction!!!

Ah! I hadn't thought about the context of the Writer's Strike, and that actually makes a lot of sense. I can definitely see the "Bourne effect" though! As far as writers during a film production, they should generally have very little involvement. In TV shows, they're involved every single day, with rewrites happening up to the moment the camera starts rolling. With film, 99% of the time the writer is done by the time production starts. Sometimes though, with big franchise films like this, the pre-production, and sometimes even production is started without a finished script (which is mind-boggling, but you'd be amazed how often it happens), which can obviously lead to countless issues. They're in a rush to get the next installment out, so they green-light the process with little more than a concept, so a writer's' strike could be (and was) devastating to films of that time.

People always diss Mathieu Amalric's villain Dominic Greene, saying he's boring. Just because he doesn't have a metal hand or a space laser pointed at earth doesn't mean he's boring in my opinion. I think he is distinct because he has a realistic motivation and he is just the kind of corrupt rich guy that exists in real life.

Okay...Bill Tanner, M's Chief of Staff is never, never, never a rat. He is one of the original literary characters created by Fleming who finally gets real screen time in the franchise. In the novels, aside from Felix Leiter of the CIA, Tanner is Bond's closest friend. The first one was just called "Chief of Staff" in 'For Your Eyes Only' in 1981, played by James Villiers. The second Tanner was played by Michael Kitchen (Foyle's War) in the Brosnan Bond films in the 90s. This Tanner is the best by far as he actually becomes a reliable right hand to M, and he is played by Rory Kinnear. Fun trivia...Rory is the son of Roy Kinnear aka Mr. Salt in 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' (1971). The death of Fields (Arterton) is much like a very famous death in 'Goldfinger'...just oil instead of gold. Fields first name if you missed it...Strawberry. 🤣🤣🤣 Trust me, some of the Connery Bond girls have worse names...especially the main Bond girl in 'Goldfinger'. This is not my favorite film in the Craig films...for me, I see it mostly as a bridge to what is to come with 'Skyfall', 'SPECTRE', and 'No Time To Die'. Personally, 'Skyfall' is the best, then 'Casino Royale', 'SPECTRE' and 'No Time To Die' are basically equally as good and tie in my mind, and 'Quantum' is meh...

The one issue I find hard to get over with "Skyfall" is that it pretty much has the same basic premise as "GoldenEye" (an MI6 agent left for dead - and long presumed dead - finally comes out of hiding for some payback). I know it's not the first instance where one of the movies reused a premise from a previous movie, but I feel as though no one ever fawns over those that much. 🤷‍♂

"POOR ASTON MARTIN!" I feel you, that DBS is the most beautiful modern sports car made. I've seen that exact 'smashed up' stunt car used in the film with its door missing. It was on display in the UK along with another screen used Aston from one of the other films.

The opening car chase scene was one of the best openings of any Bond movie. It seemed about a week from the time Mathis was taken into custody and Bond followed up with him. I would think MI-5/MI-6 would have interrogated him longer.

This timeframe is a bit of a cheat, as I agree several months (if not more) seem to have passed for Mathis. The only way you can sort of make sense of it is to assume there is a fairly big time jump in CR before Bond tracks down Mr White, and that Mathis' interrogation and retirement happen in that period.

Great reaction! It was spot on. As a huge Bond fan, this film feels very frustrating to me. I can forgive a weaker plot, but what I can't forgive is such unwatchable direction. Martin Campbell set the perfect style and tone with Casino Royale. Bond is an elegant character and I feel the direction should reflect that, setting it apart from other action films. This film had serious Bourne-envy lol They even hired the same guy for the action scenes. A good director could've made a better film from the poor script. Thankfully 'Skyfall' is much better. You'll definitely enjoy that one x

Yet, ironically, it's the shortest Bond movie ever... while all the other Craig movies rank as the longest (culminating with "No Time to Die" -- the first ever to break the 2½-hour mark).

One of the fun things that's relatively consistent across the 60 years of films is that, a bit like Indiana Jones, Bond's real gift as a combatant is to be able to instantly understand and use the environment around him as a weapon. It makes for really fun fight and action sequences as the filmmakers place the pieces around him in a way that you understand the action but don't overly anticipate it. The Craig films in particular I think do a really good job of that. That and the other real constant is Bond's SOP for cases of going in, making so much annoying noise the opposition feel obliged to try and kill him, and basically following the attempts on his life back to their source which, script wise, I think works as a way to keep more action and less plodding detective work while still seeming plausible that Bond works it out in the end. And, again, Craig is one of the best at showcasing that side of Bond - you can easily see why his villains quickly get driven up the wall by him to the point they make silly mistakes.

The scene in which the parachute opens literally a second before they hit the ground: even if they both tucked their heads and held their knees to their chests, that fall would have shattered their ribs and likely caused internal bleeding. They couldn’t really survive such a fall, but only if immediately rushed to hospital. It’s certainly not a ‘stand up and brush the dust off’-type situation. Also, glad to hear others told you about the gin in the Vesper. I wasted a lot of time typing out my own little essay regarding the Vespe, its ingredients, and how you might learn to appreciate vodka yet, if you were to try proper potato vodka, as opposed to grain vodka.

Honestly I've watched this film A LOT (I used to really like it as a kid cause of how much sheer action is in it 😂😂) and I STILL have no idea what happens at the end of the boat chase- the editing is that incomprehensible 😭 This movie seriously wants to be Jason Bourne so bad it's honestly such a shame cause this story could've actually been kinda cool if the action was written in a more "bond-esque" way

Properly weird film, not one of my favourites, but you have to endure it to get to Skyfall, which is fantastic. At the time it came out a friend of mine worked for Aston, and they hired a whole cinema night after night to do free screenings of it for friends and family of employees. The DBS that was being driven to location for use in the opening scenes was crashed into a lake by the driver - I don't think he worked for them much longer!

There’s a bit of pattern to the Craig Bond films. Every odd-numbered film-Casino Royale, Skyfall, No Time to Die-has been excellent, but numbers two and four, Quantum of Solace and Spectre, have been just okay. It bodes well that Quantum didn’t disappoint you overwhelmingly because it just means you’ll enjoy the rest of the series for sure.

Obviously with having Judi Dench as M, the Craig films (and even the latter 2 Brosnan films) wanted to use her as much as possible, even if didn't really make much sense for the head of MI6 to be in a certain situation. While films like The World is Not Enough and Skyfall handle this pretty well, Quantum of Solace definitely overdoes it. Like why is M in half the places is she's in in this movie? For story reasons it's so she can have these conversations with Bond, but for logical reasons, an underground bunker interrogating a member of a shady organization with very little security to protect her, a hotel where one of her agents was just killed, and outside Vesper's boyfriend's (who works for that shady organization) apartment, are not really the places for the head of MI6 to be in.

I did like this film when it came out. I can see how critics will say it's a bit unfocused and the behind the scenes drama with the script and director will tell you that it was a bit of a mess. It does have one of the most forgettable villains in Bond history. No shade at the actor, he's fine. He's just written very boring. One thing that does stand out with this one is that intro song Another Way To Die with Jack White and Alicia Keys is one of the best Bond songs. And it does give a conclusion to the Vesper story. Which I think probably should've been dealt with in a better movie. It didn't matter if it concluded in this but I guess it's really the only thing going for it.

While the action in these 2 movies is the grittier (realite) action, the psychology of the Craig Bond is much closer to the original material (Ian Fleming's books). Fleming's Bond isn't quite a sociopath... but he's in that zip code, and can be very dark (very unlike the dapper Bonds portrayed by Moore and Connery). As a VERY old-school Bond fan, this most recent run was an absolute revelation and SO much more interesting to watch.

Agreed. Craig and Dalton are definitely closer to Fleming’s Bond in the novels. Connery is in the early films, especially Dr. NO where he is particularly ruthless. Later Connery, Moore, and Brosnan veer far from the source material and the way Fleming wrote 007.

Especially in moments like the sword fight in Madonna's fencing academy, and according to reports, he had the highest body count per picture of any Bond. That was the problem though. Where Connery was a cool and efficient Bond, Brosnan often came in like Rambo with a mini AK (which kinda became his signature weapon), spraying bullets at his enemys like an 80s action star, not a trained spy/assassin.

Okay, one, Mathas wasn't dirty. That was a lie used to keep Bond off of the truth, that Vesper was who betrayed Bond. Two, Tanner is one of Bond's best allies. He's basically Bond's liason to M, and his analyst. In the books, Tanner is probably the closest to a true friend Bond has!

@movienightatjacquis I understand, and I love your genuine reactions to these movies! As a filmmaker, I love your commentary on shots and direction. It's fun to watch someone else discover a movie series I've loved all my life! Even the silliers ones, as you will discover on your own if you go back and watch the older films, which I definitely recommend! I am looking forward to your reaction to Skyfall.

Even two of my favorite Craig era Bond girls (Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton come a close second to Ana De Armas) cannot save this one from being a mess. I do enjoy the plane sequence and the theme song (Jack White and Alicia Keyes), but hectic action scenes, a weak villain (we've seen crazy guys swinging axes at Bond before 😉), and a scattered plot are just too much to overcome.
