The crossovers aren't necessarily the problem. The crossovers elevated the pre infinity war MCU and gave it a satisfying interconnected feel, the problem now is that it feels like they're leaning into nostalgia stoking or just purely to setup things that haven't had pay off. I think there's a bit of rose colored goggles here as well. There was plenty of duds and stinkers back then as well. I feel like Thor could've been the next leader of the MCU. He endured so much tragedy and sadness, they could've made his entire story in Phases 1-3 one big origin story for the most selfless, empathetic, unwavering, powerful leader the franchise has ever seen. Because he lost everything. He literally blames himself for the snap. Kind of like how Wolverine became the leader of the X-Men due to his personal tragedies making him a legendary leader. A story like that with Thor would be something that has NEVER been done before in such a well developed way. Literally a Shakespeare-level journey. He would've had the tragedy, charisma, amazing story, unwavering moral compass, and power to be a suitable successor to Cap and Tony, if they kept developing him correctly. Marvel's new "anchor" character. Thor blames himself for the snap, which caused Endgame, and then Tony and Cap die because of something he thinks he caused... if that isn't a PERFECT tragedy/catalyst for Thor stepping up to the mantle then I don't know what is. But no. It just seems like Marvel is making the worst possible decisions they could make right now. And even if they were unsure if Hemsworth would sign on again in 2026 - that's still ok. If he became the leader for years and then they killed him, it would've been one of the most legendary deaths to grace the screen and would've been a catalyst event for the growth of other heroes and the next leader. That is how good epics work.

Don’t think superhero fatigue is the problem; there are millions and millions of comic book fans who love these franchises and will support it no matter what. The fatigue is coming from poor writing and stagnation, the MCU isn’t trying anything new enough to justify any further following. Eternals tried to be different but failed, and that hurt because I honestly liked the Eternals and appreciated how they changed the MCU’s landscape. What the MCU needs is to bring in well written characters to take the place of Iron Man and Captain America; they need new leaders because right now there aren’t any. Doctor Strange got sidelined in his own movie, Thor is a joke, and Spider-Man just isn’t cut out to be the leader. Also, the MCU needs to drop the leftist politics, this is a big reason why many people aren’t supporting these projects anymore, especially the comic book fans who actually care the most about these projects and will pay the most money toward supporting them.

The big thing is that you're right; they can't make another high-stakes event like Endgame, so Marvel needed to lean heavily in the opposite direction- Focus on events that are deeply personal to a character, and risk destroying "their world" instead of "the world" -Which also doubles as a great way to know characters and what drives them, especially new ones for a new generation

And even then, these are screen adaptations, not comics. You can read a comic book in a matter of minutes, whereas movies and especially TV series take at least a couple of uninterrupted hours. Funny thing is you're saying exactly what I'm saying: I don't need to watch these, so I won't. The problem is that Marvel WANTS a steady viewership across all shows and movies, and are making them more and more intertwined to make viewers feel compelled to watch if they want the whole picture, but this strategy just might backfire if viewers go "Well, okay, I guess I don't have to watch all of them". For these adaptations to get sequels and spin-offs there has to be sufficient audience interest (and cash, because that's all the studio cares about) and if you start splintering the viewership that has made the MCU the media giant it is today then you also hurt newer titles coming out like Ms Marvel because the viewers will just prioritize the ones that catch their eyes. Instead of relegating what appears to be a future big name in the franchise to streaming, why not start off phase 4 by giving Ms Marvel her own (origin) movie? Streaming is big (albeit already starting to show the cracks) but it still feels like spreading Marvel properties thin when what made the MCU so popular was that it was a cinematic experience.

Honestly 30 hours of a show just to catch up isn't the biggest problem It's 30 hours of a show where you have to go onto wikipedia to see when you should watch them all. It's not like a 900 episode series where you can just sit down and start watching, it's a meandering maze of bullshit. Nobody ever gets this right, hell even the streaming services struggle to handle the way shows are made these days. Obviously making the next game of thrones episodes into a different show makes sense on the surface, but deep down it will only generate the same issues over time, you could literally skip a season of a show because it lists them weird. I think everything, except the kids series (and kids favorites like Spiderman) should be R rated. Teenagers will watch them anyway, like I watched Terminator as a child without anyone telling me it was for adults. I don't get those ratings honestly, they are mostly invented by purist mothers who are very sex negative and think that implied sex, like a couple going to bed together, the next scene they are waking up, should be R-rated, when in reality kids who are too young to see that, don't even understand there was anything sexual and kids who are old enough, well, they watch it anyway or have sex themselves. I've even heard that someone wanted to make Jojo Rabbit R-rated, not because of Nazis and war, but because a boy kisses a girl, even though it is a very typical kiss in kids movies, nothing with tongue. Essentially, almost any R-rated movie is suitable for kids over 10 in my mind, some even for younger kids. I think it is a weird American thing to give anything that has romance plot a R rating and avoid sexual topics when it isn't even necessary, because too young kids won't understand anyway or if they do, they see it as a boring and adult thing. Obviously I don't mean movies like Beach Bum that has very vulgar sex scenes, but most movies are neutered already, even if they are R rated.

Bruce’s area of expertise isn’t anger management. His area of expertise is more “managing a mental illness (either Borderline Personality Disorder or Dissociative Identity Disorder, with the comics version being DID and the mcu version implied to be more like BPD) that interacts with his superpowers to result in a rampaging hulk and a meek Bruce banner”. He had a sample of one, assumed his shit generalized, and refused to reassess whether his approach was truly necessary even after she demonstrated a level of control it took him 15 years to develop inside of a week. And, frankly, given his intelligence and his experience with superpowered individuals, his continual insistence that she needed intensive treatment came off as mansplaining. I don’t think his driver was so much sexism as it was shame at realizing that his manifestation of Hulk powers was about his own defects and not his accident. But I do think if his cousin had been a man and otherwise presented identically, a realistic depiction would show him taking the man’s word for it much more quickly. Shit, he didn’t even consider the possibility that her being a woman alone could alter her response to the gamma stuff. There are like decades of flawed assumptions continually made by smart people based on studies of men wrapped up in that. Bruce wasn’t being portrayed as a bad guy there, or acting out of character. But I NEED to watch every show, how boring they might be, to not miss things in the movies… which is sad… Massive plotlines in shows is so weird to me… I like most of the characters which is why I still watch, but it’s not that I find it fun, it’s just homework…

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you pointing out the problem I have with "feminist" movies where all the men are extremely stupid, annoying, or basically every stereotype of the worst characteristics. I've seen so many female lead movies and shows that I think are genuinely amazing because the character plays off the world around her realistically. She argues with competent men, she stands next to actual interesting characters and at times outshines them and at times loses to them. She actually has to overcome something externally and/or internally to succeed. Black Widow was one of my favorite characters during the MCU because she stood with literal giants of men and managed to still contribute in significant ways. Having female representation done right is far more important than having more of it. I'm scared and excited for Wakanda forever because since T'challa dusted in infinity, I had always hoped to see how Shuri would step up to the plate and overcome that hardship of losing her older brother and taking his place. When I realized she was dusted too, I was severely disappointed. While I hate that we lost Chadwick Boseman as I wanted to see more with him and it was a terrible loss; I hope to finally see Shuri have to deal with what that means and watch her overcome the loss and struggles she would face after losing her brother.

Lol They aren’t feminist movies, they are appearing to be feminist movies just to cash in on the day. It’s not like any of the movie companies actually have a strong progressive ideology, or anything, they are just following the cash train which ever way they need to until it changes in five years and they go that way instead. It’s just like any company getting behind a cause, the majority of the time they aren’t getting behind a cause, because they actually believe in it and want to spread its message or ideology, they are getting behind it for the optics of getting behind it to help their own business.

I'm honestly done with the MCU at this point. If a project looks like it actually wants to contribute to the overarching story in a meaningful way, and is shot like an actual film instead of some factory-made audience tested shlock, then I'll be interested. Phase Four has completely killed any interest I have in the future of Marvel, and I'm honestly just happier taking a break from the series rather than constantly tuning in to be dissapointed.
@JayDog4592 жыл бұрын
Spot on to how I feel. I've cared less and less about the MCU with every movie released after Endgame (except for No Way Home, which I enjoyed), and never had any interest in the tv shows. It's quantity over quality, oversaturation is an understatement. Nothing has been building to anything meaningful. Now that there's infinite universes, nothing matters anymore, and there's absolutely no stakes. Doctor Strange 2 was my last straw and I skipped Thor 4. Only thing that I'm still looking forward to is Guardians 3, but even then, I'm waiting for reviews to see how that turns out.

Phase 5 and onward looks really great, there is an overarching story involved here in Phase 4 that will lead into the future phases though. It’s about Incursions, reality being broken, leading to a war with Kang which will then set up Doctor Doom and the Mutants. Spider Man NWH, Loki, and Doctor Strange MoM all contribute to this storyline, with Eternals and Shang Chi doing it in a more subtle way. Things will certainly get better from here, or at least I believe.

I completely agree. The direction they are taking is awful, they now only see the MCU as a product to milk asap instead of a cinematic event that is also profitable, but this leads to tighter deadlines and terrible writers. One way to solve this is to have less content. Just have almost all of the tv series moved to either a special or a movie and then do less of them in general. Then tie them up nicely together and have good writers once again and they are all set. Also, while they are at it, have She Hulk be non canon please.

The one point I'll interject here is this: Tony Stark wasn't important for just his brains. He was important to the MCU because of his constant drive forward. He kept trying to push his story forward which brought the entire MCU along with him. And with Cap being the moral compass, striving to keep things as "True North" as they can, it really made the whole universe satisfying. The current MCU is lacking all of that, an active protagonist, and a moral compass. That's why it's all gone to shit. That, and turning Thor into a 'funny himbo'. Terrible!

I think the main reason it feels unfocused is bc of the amount of shows and movies released, its hard for directors to tie things together when theyre all working and rewriting their scripts around the same time, by the time the director of moon knight found out about the celestial coming out of the earth it was likely far too late for them to do any revisions to the script to make a nod to it. I really don’t feel like Downey and Evan’s loss were treat with the severity that they should have been. Both characters, but even more so their actors were equally significant parts of the nucleus holding the IP together in the public perception. The sentimental real estate that those two actors held has to be redeveloped with new characters. And with actors of a particular calibre that can decisively win the hearts of the audience. I don’t think we’ve seen a clear and calculated effort to fill that void yet. Until then, I think these projects will just haphazardly orbit an established core of characters that while strong, are still very obviously lacking the strength to serve as nexus for an increasingly exhausting and convoluted cast of characters.

The reason MCU works is because they spent years building a character through multiple movies, that’s why I enjoyed the Loki series with Wanda vision a very close second. Now days Disney is just busting out random characters that audiences have zero prior connections and slapping the marvel name to it, they can get away with stuff like that maybe once or twice, but 3, 4, 5 times? No thx Marvel

I think phase 4 is shit because Marvel has changed their model. Before all the movies were setup to complete one narrative storyline. After endgame that part was over and they turned into a regular movie studio but of Marvel characters. Now they release movies of different genres and movies that should really be individual stories. However they still want them all to fit into a bubble and that makes us hate them, since they don't actually have anything related to each other

The cameos is literally ALL No Way Home had going for it. An utter and complete waste of time an effort with numerous needless deaths. I think Disney has a lot to do with it! Disney is known for mass production of quantity over quality and because Marvel didn’t have the resources to turn other comic book series into the MCU when it was an independent company Disney is incorporating it but in their terms. I also noticed Disney is using the techniques that the X-Men writers tried to do in the 70s to revamp the series by introducing characters from different nationalities to tap into the international markets. We first see it with Black Panther which was able to gain success in Africa then they attempted again with Shang-Chi to gain attention from China which failed and now with Ms. Marvel to tap into the Muslim demographics.
@kreedonandrol2 жыл бұрын
I think you’re delusional, you do realize that one, there aren’t only white people in the world and two, all these characters already existed it’s not like they were made up specifically for that reason.
@jon63092 жыл бұрын
@@kreedonandrol I actually researched on this topic. I am not white btw! The X-Men was a flop when it came out during the 60s. In the 70s they were re-introduced with new characters but this time from diverse backgrounds (Storm being from Africa, Sun Fire being from Japan, Colossus being from Russia, Wolverine from Canada) the writers admitted they wanted to appeal to the international markets during that time! Disney also admitted this and was disappointed with Shang-Chi because China didn’t like it just like it didn’t like Mulan! It did horrible in the Chinese markets. Also the Pakistani version of Ms Marvel is new! I grew up in the 90s and Carol Danvers was the original Ms. Marvel until they changed her title to Warbird and then Captain Marvel. I think you are delusional being a youngster with cheap shades!

You just summed up my issues bro. I wanna watch Marvel again, but then, I feel like I got left quite far behind I was concerned if there is something I missed, do I have to watch a certain series first, a certain episode or just the whole show to understand that reference? Back then, watching one series of MCU would only mean to understand a cameo or easter egg. Now, they started to make it mandatory in order to fully understand anything.

Things always seem to end up like this dont they? They always start first as a product but also as something with a soul, something you can tell it was cared for, that goes on for a few years and then slowly devolves into the business side more and more, losing its soul in the process. It happened with music, its happening with games and the MCU is big enough that its happening to it too.

The problem isn't the new characters. The problem is their inability to drop the old characters and fully commit to the new characters. They're all sidelined to midtier content while the old characters spin their wheels front and centre. What we needed was a clean break with a series of new character origin stories.

The biggest problem is that they don't care about their content, only that it makes money. They found a schematic for money: Step 1 anger fans and cause drama for free press, Step 2 heavily push diversity/politics so they can dismiss any criticism as "sexist,racist ect ect" and so people will hopefully go see it because they feel like they are supporting a political cause or to see what all the drama is about. Step 3: Pump out as much content as possible as fast as possible.

I've been saying this since the Disney+ shows started. They should've made them films and released them as exclusive movies to the platform. The MCU is a film franchise, and the shows break that formula and add way too much watch time to its overall run. And yes, that is a problem. People only have so much time in their day to day lives to fit in 20+ hours of additional MCU content. But also, as you stated, it just feels like I'm watching a 2 hour film over 6 hours.

Winter Soldier, still my favorite. Grounded, well directed, you felt the stakes were high. Cap was vulnerable. Great chemistry between protagonists. That fight on the highway, still one of the best action scenes to date. Bring back Russo Bros and where have all the good writers gone? They've been replaced with social political activists who inject "the message" in everything they work on. Marvel's downfall has been that they forgot cinema is about escapism. People don't want to be preached to they just want to be entertained.

Yeah, She-Hulk is rough. I was watching the 3rd episode, the courtroom scene where the cartoonishly horrible guy is suing a shapeshifting elf that's a diplomat to Asgard for defrauding him by pretending to be Megan Thee Stallion so he'd buy her gifts... and I caught myself thinking, "Why am I watching this?" That was an MCU low point for me. I would say another problem is they appear to be using writers/directors who don't seem to know or care about the characters. I mean, look at Black Widow. They treated her like she was Cap or Thor with regards to her seeming to be superhuman. How many times did something happen to her in that movie and you wondered, "Why is she still alive?" Or take the scene where they break Red Guardian out of prison. Here you have two of the most highly trained espionage/secret agents in the world working together and they go in blowing everything up? Scene should have played out like a heist where they go in, get him out in a super slick way and nobody has any idea what happened. Missed opportunities. Or look at the Spider-Man movie which only works if Dr. Strange is an idiot. Or the Dr. Strange movie which has a huge scene based on the idea the smartest man alive is an idiot? I think Disney gave Feige a fat check to bastardize the MCU for D+ subs and Feige took the money and checked out.

When I watched that courtroom scene, I couldn't help but mentally compare it to the courtroom scenes in Daredevil, and how weak She-Hulk's version was in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I think the shows/films have a right to be silly and fun. Even the twerking scene I don't mind because it was just a fun post credits scene that was just meant to be a fun gag. But there's still a line, and She-Hulk crossed it for me. Much like Thor 4, She-Hulk's courtroom scene made me feel less like I was watching a show that was goofy lighthearted, and more like I was watching a show that was unintentionally parodying itself. It felt like an SNL skit.
