Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse is available on Blu-Ray with some editions of Apocalypse Now. It's well worth a watch.

No mention of Twilight Zone: The Movie? Where 3 actors were killed during filming? Or numerous other movies where stunt people died? I don’t know how a rough time with damaged sets beats out people dying.
@SyntopikonАй бұрын
I had considered adding Twilight Zone: The Movie, but I wasn't able to do it in what I felt was a tasteful way. It's why I left out many movies that had similar tragic incidents.

@@Syntopikon You’re so right! I adore Herzog’s documentaries, so you’ve finally convinced me to see his fiction work. There is no way it’s as entertaining as the stories from the set you’ve kindly shared though!

I made a couple of student films and tried with a colleague to make a short film about a superhero/vigilante. They were no more than 10 - 15 min long no budget productions but god damn i was broken from these. Hollywood filmmaking guru from early 2000s Dov Simmons said once after one of his long 3 day seminars where everyone was exhausted that 'if you dont have the energy to go home tonight and make love to your partner all night then dont bother with film making.' Never were truer words spoken!

Ever since the video essay mythological flood level deluge and it being in the perpetually hyperbolic language of headlinese the phrase "broke me" has been depleted of all impact. But then I see "broke everyone" well played that is how you do modern day marketing! I have got to see if these films are truly so intense.

Lol glad you liked it. I included only movies that had productions that were genuinely physically distressing and generally abided by the mantra "everything that could go wrong did go wrong." I'd say Fitzcarraldo, Apocalypse Now, The Abyss, Deliverance, The Evil Dead, and Waterworld were the worst in that specific order. I think with Fitzcarraldo, Apocalypse Now, and Deliverance, you also see on screen how bad it was, too. The Abyss, The Evil Dead, and Waterworld maybe less so - they *seem* well controlled, but certainly weren't in actuality.

I think Waterworld was mostly derided because of how huge a star Costner was at the time and the disagreement both he and director Kevin Reynolds had during production. Hollywood media wants to sell stories and sometimes exxagerates production issues to sell their stories.

They easily could have made a movie about the movie regarding Fitzcarraldo.

Lol yup. Wildest production ever (excepting, maybe, Roar - because it's hard to beat getting mauled by lions).

Deliverance is one of the best films ever made, but it seems like a truly hellish and gross production. Any film that takes place in nature, and is shot in nature, is liable to go bad.
@Syntopikon2 ай бұрын
Big time. It's the same with Apocalypse Now, Ishtar, Aguirre, Waterworld, etc. The more elements (literally in this case) you introduce, the more difficult it's going to get. It's a surprise that everyone on Deliverance made it through alive.

Herzog made 5 movies with Klisnky, 2 were actually fine, one was the final straw and they didnt made another together and the other 2 they almost k*lled one another. The crazy is that the 2 were they almost murder it other were filmed in the jungle.

Yeah, Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo were the ones they got violent with each other on. It's insane that even after this one, they still did Cobra Verde together.

Over time, Waterworld gained a cult following and appreciation after its initial release. Comparison with Heaven's Gate isn't fair, Heaven's Gate is a steaming pile of manure. Rapa Nui is a hugely underrated gem.

I really don't understand these people that return to the set when after they were almost killed. I understand that they might get sued for breaking their contracts or something like that, but I'd rather live and go to court than die. All these directors that risked and in some cases ended people's live are vile scumbags. Coppola is the worst of all of them, due to his association with child rapist Victor Salva. After Salva's victim revealed to his mother that Salva had been molesting him (grooming him since age six), his mother pulled him off of the movie set. Coppola sued the mother for breach of contract, paid for the lawyer for Salva's criminal trial, revealed the victim's name to the media, terrorized the victim's family, and ensured that the child actor was never able to work again.

Umm, cutting ya foot off with a chainsaw apart from being insanely fuckin gruesome and painful probably had more chance of killing him through blood loss, shock and infection than the snake bite did anyway lol. Because by the time his foot was off the venom was probably well and truly into his nervous system anyway and would of had very little effect of stopping it from going further into his system like he thought it did and apparently he survived both. He does say it was a deadly snake but perhaps it was either actually a non venomous snake, or if venomous it's venom wasn't fatally toxic as stated or it is possible for a venomous snake to not inject venom when biting you just to scare you off because it wants to save it's venom for prey that it actually wants to eat, as most snakes other than maybe giant non venoms pythons don't actually wanna eat humans anyway.🐍🤷♂☠😂🤣e
