I like how everyone else at the beginning immediately started exploring but Rufus went, "Mmm yes Cork Bark."

Thanks, my granddaughter just found a very small garter snake. I did not know they need so much heat.

They can do fine with a lower temperature range, but like a hotspot around 85-88 F.

What wonderful little snakes they are! I find them very lizard-like in the way that they move. Two of my snakes have red-themed names, too: “Red” and “Rusty”!
@Aquarimax4 жыл бұрын
JTB Reptiles thank you! I see what you mean about their lizard-like movements. I remember watching Red, I believe, constructing a f/t mouse, and remarking that my snake had never constricted its food. You mentioned that yours only started when it got bigger. Sure enough, mine will now constrict when offered a large enough food item! 👍
@JTBReptiles4 жыл бұрын
Aquarimax Pets I think that I remember that conversation! Red certainly is an aggressive feeder these days, but as a youngster he was terrible: he barely ever ate, let alone struck. Good to hear that yours now has a good response.

Great video Rus. It will be interesting to see how the clowns do in the enclosure. Make sure you share 'where' they like to gather more often.

Supreme Gecko Thanks Wally! I am excited to see how they do. It seems like it contains lots of choices, so it will make sure to document where they seem to hang out-if it works. I have a clown explosion in my bin right now...hopefully I will get a similar one in here, but on a larger scale. 👍

We have a solo garter (its bud died when it was teeny) and it's exceedingly hand shy. Cleaning out is stressful for all involved - I'm definitely going to look into bioactive to reduce disturbance and just let the little guy experience my hand nearby without picking up. I do try and do that anyway. We also have a viv with a heavy hinge lid and it makes me feel horrible to think of it swinging down on him at any point... *Shudder*

You might find that the garter calms down if it has another garter for company. That seems to work with many of them.

Hello Russ great video I've been thinking about adding the Garter snake to the collection...how often do they breed?
@Aquarimax4 жыл бұрын
Nick Wills DC Tarantulas Hi! They breed once or sometimes twice a year...around 20 babies, although that can vary quite a bit.

How long did you wait after you built this to introduce the snakes? Did you take any precautions for the plants purchased (cleaning)? I am building one currently. Also, what are the names of your plants?

Very nice setup and very beautiful snakes! I've had various kinds of lizards, tortoises and amphibians over the years, but never snakes. Do you think garters would be good ones to start with? Yours look very calm. Do they musk you?
@Aquarimax4 жыл бұрын
John Racine Thank you! Garters are generally regarded as great beginner snakes. I would agree! They have never musked me. Captive-bred garters are much less likely to do so than wild-caught garters. 👍

With my limited experience with snakes (an African egg eater), you can calm a snake down by handling it often. Initially, ours would strike when we came near, but now she’s a lazy noodle that doesn’t really care where you put her and will cuddle up in your warm lap and eat right next to us.
