I'm 38 and have lived in Jonesborough since I was 8. I moved here with my parents from Delaware. I've been the victim of two hate crimes at an earlier age, living in Jonesborough. The first was at the Ingles at age 14, and the second at the Crossroads near 107 at age 16. Both times, I was punched in the face for the color of my skin by fully grown adult Caucasian men. I've got many racial horror stories from this town and a lot of trauma. Jonesborough is extremely red (conservative). The shopkeepers downtown are kind, and people in businesses are friendly, but the regular locals are not friendly to outsiders. There is no diversity. The people of color who live here make up a small percentage compared to the Caucasian population. It is not welcoming to the LGBTQ community. Jonesborough is a very close-minded, boring place with a lot of bigoted people. If I could afford to move, I would in a heartbeat. I hate it here.

Anyone thinking of moving to Northeast Tennessee needs to inform themselves about the medical monopoly here and how that has negatively influenced quality of care. Also, because so many people have decided to move here, snatch up farmland, and buy out folks who no longer can afford to their real estate taxes, the cost of homes has doubled. Real estate here is no longer below the national average as it once was but our average income has stayed way below the national average. People are living in campers while they wait for a home to open up. Rents have doubled and what a person could rent for $800 less than 10 years about, is now going for $1600. This ship has sailed but I hear Kentucky is nice.

Nice video - thanks! Very informative. Do you have one on the real estate in the area? Lastly, we live in a town with 100k and horrible urban sprawl and all the "stuff" that comes with it. Curious if Johnson City is "sprawling" into Jonesborogh? I know it (Johnson City) has it's definite pluses too and growth is not a bad thing...if done well; but just really look for a perhaps slowly growing town with a small town vibe with a place to get involved and things to do.

We live within a mile of a train track, and several roads cross the tracks. By law, the train is required to sound the horn 2 long, 1 short, and 1 long blast at every intersection. Like Jennifer Richman said, in a little while you stop hearing it.
