A filter is necessary. You can use a four cup disposable coffee filters or a reusable one like I've been using. When you push the 'Brew Later' button the LED screen will begin to flash. That's when you set your hour and minute and a.m. or p.m. When you got it set to the time you want, let it flash on its own and it will stop flashing. It should be set. Make sure that button light is on to indicate it's scheduled to brew. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
