"Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe's funeral in Detroit

The world will say a final goodbye to a legendary icon Wednesday as Gordie Howe -- or better known as "Mr. Hockey" -- will be laid to rest. His funeral is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.

I grew up with my grandparents in Manitoba. Mr. Howe was revered in our home. My grandfather was a lot like him. Strong, humble, kind and compassionate with a great wit. My grandmother loved Mr. Howes line and would quote it to me often. “Play hockey religiously, where it’s better to give than receive”. I never got to see Mr. Howe play but he’s always been my favourite. What a great man.

my brother got to meet him at a trade center, and he was 6 or 7 (he's 19 now) and Gordie was signing autographs, and he pulled him around and said 'come here!' and he putt him on his lap and said 'wave to the crowd kid!', and my mom couldn't take a picture, but somebody came over and said 'give me your email address and I'll send you the picture', so she said 'ok', and that picture is still in my house in a book. (I'm still jealous of him) R.I.P Mr. Hockey.

Some years ago Harry Neale former NHL coach, then tv analyst, recited a running joke at the time. It went something like this. 'The Red Wings head office recently got a call from a local Detroit priest saying 'Could you please tell your players not to cross themselves before their games, because they're giving the church a bad name.' ( They were emerging from losing seasons back then.) Ha, ha, very funny. But then again... Fame can hit you 'blind side'. 'Oh get lost !' , may be recieved because one wants to be lost. Narrator on a story about Howe, says,"Skating on God's own ice" (as a youth, a Catholic in Saskatchewan). But Howe put the Church on 'ice' as he 'bragged' how many times he didn't bother showing up, for God's sake, Mass,(back then),during the Detroit days. For the Game Of After Life that really matters, when its 'game' over. This self admitted, spiritual bankruptcy led to how many real life, 'aspiring rookies', to be snuffed out through abortion because of his quest for longevity through 'stem cell' intervention, okayed by his 'Dr.' son. I hope and pray he repented, before, the real penalty box, before 'sudden death' overtime finally ended, his soul on earth. What he (probably) needs is prayers, which that modern NHL award event masquerading as a 'Catholic' funeral, lacked, and then some. People (mourners) mostly came dressed in black (a sign of mourning-praying for his soul). But look at the priests all in white, and virtually no prayers for his soul. A 'whitewash' of a soul, in other words, and the obvious sight of them - 'they don't give a damn' - at least visibly. Christe Eleison, Gordie.
