Strangely enough, this might just be the most tactical response to a situation that I've ever seen on a show. He's appropriately geared, surprises them with overwhelming force, and most importantly, shoots first with no hesitation. 2/3 of his attackers were dead before they even knew they were in a firefight. It's the only logical way a solo operator would do business.

@timeskip1344 ай бұрын
Absolutely phenomenal moment of writing and acting at 1:16. We already know that Ray is capable of remarkable violence, possesses a ruthless intelligence, and that this likely isn't his first time in a firefight given his military history and current criminal undertakings. He ends up mercilessly gunning down Davros' hitters moments later, even having the presence of mind to aim the opening burst at the car's engine block to make the occupants an easier target. He's so good at compartmentalizing this violence and dark dealings of his trade that it's a larger theme of the show overall -- how badly it affects his relationship with the 'normal' world and those important to him. With all that said -- Ray doesn't have the expression of Billy Badass™ who's thinking "I'm gonna smoke every last one of these chumps" even though that's what ultimately happens. It's like the 'human' side of him comes vomiting back up for a few moments (alongside the adrenaline dump) and he has to swallow it down, take a deep breath, and internally monologue to himself "Fuck, I'm probably going to die here, but maybe I surprise them." before falling into a frightening level of singular focus and executing his plan with military-level precision. It makes me feel like I am watching a realistic character behaving consistently with how he has been portrayed, and that's the kind of recurring excellence I enjoyed from this show.

@@chrislj2890 A lot depends on the part of the car, type of car, and type of bullet. Ray is using a pistol-caliber 9mm subgun on light commercial vehicles. It MAY not penetrate or be deflected by the body of the car or windows and certainly wouldn't pen the engine block...which is why Ray was shooting multiple-round bursts through the windows or from the side mostly. This show had a good tech advisor who was listened to. Rifle-caliber rounds (5.56mm, 7.62mm, etc) has much greater powder loads and thus higher velocity, so they WILL pen engine blocks. Heavier or older vehicles made mostly from steel (i.e. vehicles from the 1960's or older, dumptrucks, etc) will also be more resistant.

@tomsmith30453 ай бұрын
A 9mm doesn't have much recoil. Most of his shots missed, and he knew it. The sub gun was partly for the physical effect, partly to stun the attackers, and it worked. He approached the vehicles fully aware that he could have missed the occupants completely. Shooting from the hip? Not accurate, but they used to train both military and police to shoot that way, up until the 1950's at least. It's not ineffective with training.
@ericbailey67793 ай бұрын
@@tomsmith3045 9mm might not have much recoil, but his barrel didn't even move. And anybody that didn't get training from a western novel or a black and white movie knows that aimed shots would have been much more effecting and made this a much more believable scene.

@@ericbailey6779 Against a professionally trained adversary, I completely agree with you. Against wannabe or even actual gangsters? Then sten or sten-like 9mm was effective in completely wrecking whatever timing or plot they had. That, and I'd say a sub gun isn't a bad thing against an occupied moving vehicle. Even if you miss the person, the rounds flying into it are going to cause a bit of chaos and damage even to those with training.
