Richard Page. What a voice. Probably one of the most underrated bands ever. RCA fucked them over. The fact that so many people are still discovering and talking about Mr. Mister decades later speaks to their legacy.

@@ObamAmerican48 for dudes? Not at all. I've listened to mister mister for over 35 years, ever since an obscure called "welcome to the real world" found its way into my parents CD collection. People knew and know Broken Wings over here but otherwise Mr Mister were not known by many. Luckily my parents somehow bought that CD all that time ago..still have it to this day

it’s hard to put into the right words how much I relate to this song, the imagery/imagination in it, Richard’s soaring vocals, and how unfortunate songs like this aren’t as appreciated as Broken Wings, even the band itself. So many should know Mr. Mister today, very diverse song listings, especially this sophomore album. Wish I could’ve been at that event.

I was 8-years old when this took place, but I wish I could've been there...if only to watch it from a window in one of those houses, off to the side of the crowd. For me, this is the song that stands out most in the whole performance. At 2:30, it starts to get really good; but the band is just soaring by 4:12 on out! I love how they've extended it and possibly improvised some parts. It sounds even better than the studio version.

@@ryanfreer77 Indeed! I was already a huge fan of Pages (R.Page/S.George) before they reformed themselves into Mr Mister with Farris & Mastelotto. I was SO excited when I found out they were the same guys & had finally made it on the map! I was fortunate enough to see them in concert three times ... two times at The Palace in Hollywood in 1986 and 1987, and then again at the Greek Theater in 1987. I was about 22-23 at the time & those concerts still remain among ther biggest highlights of my life. When we saw them at The Palace, we were right at the stage! I held my hand out to shake Richar's hand, and although he didn't respond at first he eventually did. After the concert was over, I suggested to my sister that we wait outside of the building to get their autographs...no one else was around except some roadies who mocked me, but poo on them because unbelievably, they appeared, one by one, from the side of the building (except Farris) and I was able to get Richard's, Steve George's, and Pat's autographs! I told him how much I loved their music from Pages & was happy they made the big time. Richard and Steve were extremely reserved and quiet and wouldn't make eye contact at all, while Pat was exceptionally engaging & friendly. The second time we saw them at The Palace, I was able to get their autographs again, but right at the stage. That time I only got Richard's and Pat's autograph...Pat was kind enough to come forward from behind his drums when I motioned to him during a break between songs asking if he would come over to sign an autograph. I told him I thought he was the best drummer I've ever heard in my life but he didn't think he was and told me I was crazy for saying so LOL. BTW, If you watch the video Healing Waters (Richard wearing all black, Steve George in a short, rusty-orange shirt, & Steve Farris in a sort of Indian-themed jacket), that was filmed the very night we saw the concert. Although I wanted to stay longer after it was over, my sister said she wanted to go home, so I drove her home, but when I came back, they wouldn't let me back in, & then they filmed that video afterwards. They never released the video in the 80s, but finally did within the last decade or so. Mr Mister was among my top 3 favorite artists of the time ~ the others being Level 42 and Phil Collins. (I could make a full list of loads of other artists I loved but I'm too tired at the moment lol.) But the 80s were definitely a decade rich of diverse musical styles and REAL Talent ... I find myself nowadays listening to more 80s music than anything else even though the 60s n 70s were influential & great to me, too. I think the whole music business died at the end of the 80s. The 90s were loaded with grunge and computer-generated vocals instruments devoid of soul and substance, and the 2000s haven't been any different. The only new artist I would remotely consider having any notable talent would be Dirty Loops, but even at that, their lyrics have gotten a little too smutty for me as of recent. Anyway, at least we can still listen to and reminisce about the gems from the 80s!

@@OneHope4Heaven Interesting you should mention Phil Collins! As a musician-a keyboardist-starting out as a drummer, I regard Collins as one of the greatest drummers/percussionists in my lifetime. Both his work with Genesis and his jazz band, Brand X, is entirely on another level. But Genesis was one of those prog-rock bands who, like Yes, were simply a group of world class virtuosos, and brilliant musicians. It’s too bad that Peter Gabriel left just as they were reaching their pinnacle. The album, “Trick Of The Tail,” was like a stunningly beautiful, nostalgic dream throughout. There’s not one bad song on it, and over the years, I’ve only grown to love it more...along with “Wind And Wuthering.” By the turn of the 80’s, both analog and digital synthesizers were being heavily used to create music that was more electronic at its core....and I definitely loved this! Collins’ work, beyond a doubt, helped pave the way for it. I can’t say enough about how magical the 80’s were overall. Btw, it was great reading the story of your encounters with Mr. Mister! It really is an experience when we meet and talk to those who inspire us. I remember hanging out with The Fixx back when they performed at a small venue in 1997, and how easy going they were. The same with Gary Numan years later at one of his shows. I grew up listening to all these guys, and I must agree with you. Nearing the end of the 80’s, something happened particularly in the mainstream, where that magic began to fade. I was never keen for the grunge and hiphop stylings prominent in the 90’s, and most certainly not what came after. Music is probably the most profoundly influential art that both reflects, and shapes our culture. I can only hope that we’ll see another musical revolution in our lives, as incredible as the one that came from the late 60’s, through the 80’s.

@@ryanfreer77 DANG, my friend! ... we're on the same wavelength! 😃 I'm a musician, too (piano) & come from a musical family. I became interested in learning drums after hearing Mastelotto play on one of Al Jarreau's songs that came out around the same time Mr Mr was running, called Let's Pretend (subsequently written by Richard Page, Steve George, Richard's cousin, John Lang, & guitarist, Jay Graydon - Rich & Steve also sang backing vocals on that). When I first heard the song, I didn't know it was Pat, but I was so knocked out by his rhythms, & the crescendo-ing cymbal, decending pitch of the toms, & his clean timing, I had to find out who it was. After reading the credits, I discovered it was Pat & was floored, & from then on, wanted to learn how to play drums (& I'm female, btw - lol). The other things that blow me away about Pat's playing is not only his clean timing without sounding like a metronome or machine, but how he (unlike so many other drummers of the day) integrated electronic drums into his acoustic set to augment his palette of sounds rather than just replace them (as it was the "sonic trend" of the day). Collins, too, used electronic drums in an Innovative way by bringing them to the Forefront of the song and/or making them the focal point as in In The Air Tonight & many others where he used programmable drum boxes - all without sounding too stiff or mechanical. It was the use of interesting pitches & rhythms that saved it from sounding like a robot. Additionally, his vocals & keys are gorgeous (One More Night), & I believe he was responsible for bringing back the ballad when Against All Odds came out B/C they just weren't being done anymore by the late 70s/early 80s. It's funny ... I remember hearing Follow You Follow Me on there radio when I was a kid, but didn't know who it was at the time. By '81, tho, I DID! When I heard In The Air Tonight on the radio for the 1st time & blown away by it, I immediately called my cousin on the phone who was DJ-ing @ a local radio station at the time and asked him who it was. He looked at the record and said the only thing on the label was "P. Collins". After that, I immediately went to the record store and bought the record and of course loved the whole thing, & eventually got all of his solo albums of the 80s. I think aside from synthesizers, one of the most defining style elements of 80s music is BIG Drums - drum-heavy / drum-forefront which I absolutely love. Another example of that is drummer Fred Maher of Scritti Politti on Cupid & Psyche. MAN, did I love that record! - still do! Anyway, I finally did fiddle around with drum lessons - a few private, & some night school group classes, but haven't been able to fully pursue it because I have no space/sound-proof place to practice/money to get a drum set. People have suggested getting an electronic kit, but it's just not the same as an acoustic. I love percussion and find pitch and timbre ultra interesting - you can't generate those nuances as effectively with an electric kit (ok, without pulling in computers & MIDI maybe, but I like analog SO much better - it's organic & natural & more visceral because you get to feel the vibration of the drum, too. Same applies to cymbal sounds. I like ping rides & experimenting with all the different pitches you can get hitting cymbals from different angles & spots on the "platter" itself - closer to the bell or edge, for example.) Combining the kick with a bass player's note puts TNT into it ... just love it. I could go on & on about this stuff ... hope you didn't mind ... lol

These guys come off as so modest, but the fact is there's more talent on display here than 95% of bands from the 80s, and 99.99% of bands today. People get it confused because they wrote pop music that somehow, there was nothing behind the curtain of substance.

I love Mr Mister, brings 80s memories back to me. I was a baby then, I miss being so young. Richard is so good looking here he really reminds me of Rutger Hauer the rugged 80s actor of Bladerunner. Today's singers make me want t o cry with desperation and sadness. They're so boring and humdrum, bland and self obsessed.
