There is a sequel called Revenge of the Zombies, also Mantan Moreland. Not Mantan Moreland but worth watching: Thriller episode - Elizsbeth Montgomery, John Carradine. Thriller episode - Pigeons from Hell, described by Stephen King as possibly the greatest horror story of the 20th century. Also House of Long Shadows - Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, John Carradine, Peter Cushing. I Saw What You Did, The Nightwalker - Barbara Stanwyck. Homicidal, Dark Waters - Merle Oberon. Madhouse - Vincent Price, Peter Cushing.

Much better production values than usually found in the era's "race pictures." Toddy Pictures Company was responsible not only for a number of the Miller/Moreland comedies but also for the musical Westerns starring Herb Jeffrey, "The Bronze Buckaroo." The film's budget was supposedly only $15,000, with the film shot in six days. Loved the joke about Jack Benny "who worked on Rochester's radio program," plus the gag about "Nothing ever happens here at the Grand Hotel Ethiopia" (the catchphrase from THE GRAND HOTEL). From what I heard Mantan Moreland was considered by both Moe Howard and Larry Fine to be a replacement as the third stooge in The Three Stooges, I believe after Shemp Howard died. However Harry Cohn, president of Columbia Pictures, wanted a contract player so Joe Besser was selected. Another choice was Joe DeRita, but he at the time also wasn't part of Columbia Pictures. One can only imagine.

The "Moe wanting Mantan as a Stooge" is an interesting tale spun out of control thanks to some creative blog entries and then spread across the net like wildfire...but alas, it's not true. DeRita, having a brief solo stint as a Columbia two-reel comedies headliner in the latter half of the 1940's, wasn't approached until after the shorts made their tv debut in 1958.

Pretty enjoyable, with a predominantly African-American cast. Mantan Moreland is the star, but FE Miller and the other performers are fun to watch, they're obviously having a blast, and the writing is a step above what we usually see in these movies.
