this was so good thanks for making the video. but there is a few facts missing, 1 the race cars shown don't use a "3sgte" its the 503E which the 3sgte is based on (503e existed before it), 2 the biggest missed fact of toda racing built 3sge (gen 1) for japans formula 3 and were fantastic making insane na power for the time (1980's) 3 the gen 2/3 3sgte blocking cracking is also around the water pump and between cylinders 2 and 3. this was due to casting movements and affects random blocks some will crack with 300hp some not til 1000+hp just depends on the block. 4 within the mr2 community they is now many reliable, solid builds using the stock gen 4 3sgte making 400whp with no troubles at all but they are some thin connecting rods. 5 the main down fall of the 3s and 5sfe is oiling, specifically the oil pump. it is a little undersized and is prone to damage from contamination, less oil pumped, no oil pressure, spun bearings. but this is fix with a 98+ camry oil pump or gen 4/5 3sgte one
@willgreer43214 жыл бұрын
Yep be lost me a bit after mixing up the 503e. Dont try and make 800 hp on the stock block!!!. I have a gen 3 motor in my 185 and all though people do upgrade the oil pumps on high hp builds I wouldnt call it the main failure, I very rarely hear of oil pump issues. Cracked blocks at 400hp + yes definitely, not so much pumps. Much of oil starvation pre gen 3 has been attributed to poor sump baffling.

I'm not arguing or anything so don't jump down my throat, what's the second fact he's missing? That Toda racing used 3sge's for formula 3? Is that really an important missing fact? Does he need to mention everywhere this engine was ever used? I'm sure you'll be able to convince me I'm just asking.

The late gen 3 blocks were revised (97 or 98+), had a reinforced waterpump area, and Toyota used better castings. These are equivalent in strength to the gen 4 blocks.

I'm pretty sure that the 503E engine, which was in the cars like the Eagle Talon mk3, was the basis of the 3S engine. Being a race engine, many materials were exotic, such as the block, which was a special iron that isn't the same as the typical cast iron you see in the vast majority of engines. The cylinder heads are also completely unique, due to the differences in water jackets and cooling between the 503E and the 3S-GTE. They are directly related however!

F series head engines where almost always the non-performance engines in toyota's line up they almost always have low power numbers and not very much in technology nor excitement in the engine design, so i think most F series head engine's wont come up in the iconic engine series. But yeah I agree the 5sfe block with 3sgte head should have been brought up which has been given the name 5sgte a stroker engine made with toyota parts just like the 7age. ATS racing also has a 2.3 liter kit for this frankenstein engine kinda like mrp's 9age kit. Maybe there could be a 3s revision or part 2 video. :D

My suggestion for an european engine: VAG AEB 1.8T but be aware its most likely that Volkswagen asked Toyota how to build this 20V turbocharged fourcylinder inline engine since Toyota had the same technology years in advance. The AEB is an engine with good availability nowadays and it can reach 350hp with mild tuning and up to 1000hp with major tuning. Thumbs up for the iconic rap.
@drednough4 жыл бұрын
On a second thought there is nothing iconic about the AEB. The original Audi Quattro engines seem more likely to fit to your series of iconic engines. Namely the WR or its beefier brother RR. Inline five cylinder engines with 2144ccm displacement from the mid 80s.

I own a 1987 4th gen Celica 2.0GT convertible with a 3sge (150hp no cat) and a 1988 SV20 Camry with a 3sfe (121hp with cat). Both are amazing. With the celica people (non car guys of course) tend to expect a big V8 under the hood and I use to reply that it's half as big and twice as fun. And as far as the Camry is concerned: I've converted 5 Mercedes owners to Toyota enthusiasts... It's just - that - good.

Such a great throw back video about the 3S series of engines. As a side note if I ever buy a Supra again, the first thing I would do is rip that 2JZ out and sell it. There are way better engines that will go into that chassis and be more fun for street driving. Yup I said it and I am okay with this. (:

fun fact the e120(9th gen, 2003-2008) corolla shares its chasis with the Caldina and with some drilling and welding using caldina parts it can be made into awd. corolla has same frame rail as the caldina so you copy paste and you got yourself a monster sleeper.

Me too! I have a JDM Celica GT4 ST205. All you really need to do is let them breath and its a serious upgrade. Decent filter, decat and exhaust is all you really need. The stage 1 upgrade on the turbo really helped too, hits 12psi at 3100 rev's now. Being a bit neglected right now as I bought the new Supra back in September.

I owned a Japanese domestic model 2004 Altezza (same body shell as Lexus IS200) RS200Z with the 3SGE BEAMS Dual VVTi engine and 6MT. It had a cold air intake and free flow exhaust, but was otherwise stock. The only thing that stopped it was the rev limiter. Super reliable and an absolute pleasure to drive. Great handling. The only thing that let it down was Toyota's choice of gearbox ratios that had big gap between 2nd and 3rd and very small gap between 5th and 6th.

I know they are from the 1990's idealolgy which blessed us with over engineered and manufactured components thereby creating the legendary status they have come to be known as and in doing so the creators blessed us with a massive redundancy factor, especially when compared to the latest plastic fantastic elastic alloy excuses for engines.

@@mccsmotorsport9511 So a Frankenstein top end huh. Only problem is the cost of this would almost certainly exceed option B which would be forced induction, only requiring decompressed pistons and a switch from titanium valves to steel valves, (red top head) decent head gasket and your choice of super charger or turbo for the huff and puff. The list goes on whichever option you choose I guess, ecu, intercooler, injectors etc to do the job correctly and reliably but I would love to hear that thing at 9000rpm tho...That would be a banshee scream worth hearing.
