Eric was just too dumb to understand Howards questions. When Howard tells Eric his audio on the American Idol show is unintelligible Eric thought he meant that Eric is unintelligent, not that it's impossible to understand what is being said by Eric. Another thing is when Howard asks if Eric is bothered by the tech guy being heard perfectly by the audience and Eric not being heard clearly by the audience. Eric thought that meant is he mad the tech guy can be heard, not if he's bothered by the audience not hearing him on his own show. Eric never understood the humor of the show but he truly didn't understand most of the questions from the Stern crew.

I think Howard nailed this once when he said due to Eric's condition he probably didn't have a lot of opportunity to socialize when growing up and it held him back. In a lot of ways he was still sort of a kid mentally
