It's a really weird piece of dialogue that shows a snippet into his mind that is already fractured. The head injury is just a red herring. he was always slipping since before the story begins.

Molly had already been pointing out that Dutch was changing before this mission. He had also already left Arthur out to dry when he was kidnapped, and he had done quite a few shady things that people had been calling him out on before. I think Dutch was always a self serving narcissist. It was just in his best interest to show loyalty to the gang and act as though he had a nobility about him because the gang was doing well and supporting him. As their lifestyle was getting harder and harder, and less and less lucrative, he started showing his true colors. He was always taking advantage of the other gang members.

Another interesting thing is the meeting you walk in on between Hosea and Dutch right before the bank robbery in Saint Denis, where Hosea and Arthur are going everything, but Dutch still seems to be in some sort of haze and unable to even process the full scope of the plans Hosea was trying to convey to Dutch. There are moments after that trolley accident where Dutch showed classic signs of brain trauma. Rockstar is the bee's knees when it comes to this shit I swear to God.

I agree Dutch always was a lier. He don't tell what's right, he tell what people want to hear and what shall they hear. Arthur was just a tool, although he was riding 20 years with Dutch. In prologue when Arthur asks Dutch what was happening on the boat on blackwater, Dutch said sth like " we cared about you, that's was happening" He lied to Arthur. Dutch shot a girl without reason in the head. But he wouldn't tell that. Dutch used everybody just for himself. So the money box, where he " managed" the money for the gang. At the end, when you go for money, Arthut gains 45k $. So that would be enough for Tahiti. Calculated to 2019 that meant millions of usd The tragedy for me is, that Arthur spend 20 years with a guy who used him. Arthur never found peace or a lovely wife caused by his gunslinger lifestyle. For me, Dutch wasted Arthur's life.

It’s an interesting point. Maybe it accelerated his deterioration but I think he showed signs of unraveling well before that. You can pick up on that just from the mundane conversations Arthur can have with him around camp and the ramblings you start to hear from him in camp even before Jack gets taken. Arthur was questioning his decisions in missions before they go to Bronte’s and even right before they rob in the trolley station in this video. Perhaps this head injury contributed but I think Dutch was clearly coming undone throughout the entirety of the gameplay. By him even allowing Micah to join probably kicked that off, at least as far as we know back and can tell from the storyline. Thanks!

nah dutch was always slipping it just took a little more less of control each time to really break lose his inner demons and of course micah twisting the noose. The head injury is a red herring he was slipping before the story even starts. Once even in chapter 2 i got a camp dialouge of dutch reading some evelyn miller and just snapped at arthur out of no where saying he suspects arthur will betray him and that arthur seemed like the type. it was so bizarre. He has more of a hold on himself the more control he has over situations and people around him but he was never really sane to begin with.

You COULD make an argument that it made him lose it faster but there's no proof of that in the game as the game already implied that he was losing it at the beginning.

To me this theory is just one of convenience. It gives Dutch an out for the behavior he'd been amping up from the beginning. Personally I think Micah and Dutch were a catalyst for each other. Dutch keeps Micah around because he's a yes man and validates his plans no matter how terrible and Micah stays cause he can use Dutch

When he said ch4 i was like "it's gonna be he hit his head, calling it" - I think saying Dutch totaly changed because he hit his head basically undermines his whole character and I really hope that's not the story they intended for him. Obviously whatever they wanted goes, but I'm not sold on the fact that his downfall was a head trauma; he doesn't start being manipulative afetrwards, it just becomes more obvious as the situation falls aprt and he loses his grip on the gang. Didn't miss it - but it doesn't explain much either. Dutch's behavior issues started much earlier - Several of the gang members comment on his uncharacteristic murder of the girl on the boat in Blackwater. He makes a comment in the camp at Horseshoe Bend that he thinks Arthur will betray him (not his only bout with paranoia) - He bitches incessantly about people doubting his decisions - which would be understandable if it weren't also obvious that he's been making a lot of bad decisions since slightly before Blackwater. None of his plans work - which considering their history has to be a significant change or Arthur wouldn't have been with him for 20+ years. He's becoming increasingly moody and violent. Also, his inability to see who and what Micha is has to be out of character or the gang would have never held together as long as it did. Originally I suspected it was Micha's influence but that timeline is to short for such significant changes without some other major issue also influencing his behavior. Overall, I very much enjoyed the game, but it does have it's problems. The story is pretty clean except for the significant lack of any real explanation of why Dutch turns on his long time companions a complete 180 from what seems to be his historical pattern (based on dialogue). The rest of my complaints are game mechanic issues - from cut scenes that require button pressing (if it's a cut scene, I don't want to have to hold buttons down to make it move forward.) To choosing my weapons for missions for me - to locking in a rifle scope view with no way out. Also changing the mechanics of Dead Eye every time I finally get the hang of the previous method - on the theory that the new method is an improvement. A theory that I don't happen to agree with.

Dutch had already lost his marbles even before this event happened. not saying it didn’t contribute or that it didn’t exacerbate his personality change, but i think you’re giving that one bit of simple dialogue far too much credit. i just cant see how "ouch i got a boo boo on my noggin" can fully give a justifiable and logical explanation on how Dutch turned into a total and utter fruit loop. Dutch was always selfish and a schemer, it just became more and more noticeable as the story progressed. it wasn’t as though "Dutch hit his head during a trolley shootout incident AND SUDDENLY he became an evil mastermind who betrays his closest comrades... DUN DUN DUNNNNN!" like lol no. he was always that way. it’s just his true colours weren’t made apparent immediately, they had to develop his character first which, in turn, also developed the story and gave it more depth and the story became more layered. Dutch was but just another dime a dozen outlaw, setting out to make it big. he was also a dreamer as well and believed with an unparalleled amount of conviction that even the most impractical and impossible plans could be achieved. his demise was ultimately his own determination, not allowing anyone stand in the way of fulfilling these delusions, even if that meant losing the trust or even the lives of his own gang members. Dutch is in my opinion perhaps the most interesting and fascinating character in the entire game. such a deep complex individual. i hope that, if there does happen to be an RDR3 or even a DLC (which is probably more likely), that Dutch is the protagonist in which you get to play as.

I think Dutch is misinterpreted when he told Arthur. that he spoke Spanish. It seemed he actually told Arthur a deliberate lie to shut him up and then when Arthur called him on it, he simply backtracked on that with a more truthful answer. Plus, it seems to be ignored that Dutch killed the woman because she was trying to change the deal, something which made her appear untrustworthy, pulling a knife on him confirmed it, in which case I think Dutch’s instinct was correct and he stopped her from betraying them, having suffered enough betrayals already up to that point. Arthur was already feeling the symptoms of TB even though he doesn’t yet know it, and beyond his diagnosis starts to see death differently and that may have been an early sign in Guarma when he questioned Dutch’s explanation for killing the woman.

The whole "Dutch head injury downfall theory" is complete BS. Just go through the camp interactions in Chapter 2 (Horseshoe), Dutch REPEATEDLY makes references to being betrayed, how Arthur will "turn on him", how he is constantly bickering with Hosea about what to do and where to go, basically "ranting" after reading passages from the books in his tents about "ideals" that can easily be confused for something else, and several other examples of being "delusional". The "head injury" that Dutch got later on would result in basically a concussion, MAYBE accelerated paranoia and a dash of ego boost. But as far as being "changed" in any way? Absolutely NOT! Dutch was always a crook, always looking out for himself and as long as you "blindly followed" his every word, we was fine. But as soon as things started to get "rocky", his true nature came through. That true nature, obviously, was a "messiah complex". Dutch was quite literally a 'cult leader', with the gang as his 'cult followers'. The only "difference" between normal 'cults' and the 'gang' was an issue of LAW, not religion.

Good Point Ross But my speculation is since Davey Ma and Jenny died during the attack of Blackwater started the decline of Dutch But His real Decent did not start until he Had Lost Hoesea, Lenny And the capturing of John I look at it of Hosea Being a very important part of Dutch (Kind of like a baby sitting keeping him on track). And my second Part of slowly loosing The Gang Got Him more and more unhinged which made him more and more wary of who was friend and who was an enemy. Also molly O’Shea’s betrayal and death. She was Dutch’s lover and he treated her better than most of the others (she wasn’t expected to help with chores because she was with Dutch) that scene where she admits to betraying them and in turn gets shot had a huge impact on everyone especially Dutch. He just lost hosea, he doesn’t know who to trust, his lover betrayed him, and John and Arthur are doubting and questioning every move he makes. All combined with a traumatic brain injury really makes sense

Something about shooting a woman/girl for no apparent reason? Charles and Javier both talk to Arthur about this. That is far before any head injury or Arthurs illness.

There are several small instances throughout the game that show Dutch’s true personality. Very small details like when they brought Jack home, and Dutch was yelling to Abagail and John cut him off. He gave a “look”. This is what I really like in this game, is the subtlety.

I think something is a little off in your analysis. I’m going through a second play through right now and it’s mentioned early in the game that Dutch killed a woman during the whole black water mess. The person who said it said it wasn’t like him. I see this as a clue that Dutch is always been a calculating psychopath but it is possible that the head injury made him lose his patience that held things together before hand.

Josh S I totally agree about Micah. He first joins the group like 6 months prior to the Blackwater massacre. And then all along the way plants seeds of distrust of the others in Dutch’s head. In chapter 2 he says something to Arthur like how he suspects Arthur will betray him in the end. And then I think Hosea (voice of reason) dying really set him off

Micah helped Dutch become more unstable also. Micah says something about being a survivor and it's like he's turned Dutch into a paranoid schizophrenic who thinks everyone is out to get him or to do something to him and the seed was probably planted by Micah and then blew up with the head trauma.

After Dutch Tahitians I guess Arthurs dialogue is different from mine in what he says next. In my playthrough he said "We made a bit of money on that river boat job but not enough for us to leave and live peacefully, where's the rest coming from" but in this video Arthur says " How we gonna get enough money... for the passage of a whole boat... A captains discretion, and land enough to keep us" that's another tiny detail in this video.

The downfall of the Van der Linde gang was unevitable but the change of personality on Dutch was never a change, his plan was to use the members of the gang to his own profit all along. Before the crash at St. Denis, you could watch him always discussing with his lover at the acampments. There's also a random NPC, a blind man that predicts the future for a dollar that warns Arthur about the ones he trustes the most. I believe this crash could've accelerated things a little bit on Dutch's behaviour but never the main reason. And there's also Micah's snaky influence.

Lmao...and this is why alot of u need to be street smart as well as book smart Dutch was a shady guy from day one with his random reasons and want for money to survive in a place he didnt know about to then later after how many years just live at the top of a cold mountain. Dutch was using these people since day one with micah as a way out of what he thought was a "easy come up". Random acts of him thinking u know what lets rob another train and cause more trouble for our "gang" and bring more heat on is since we have no where to go Dutch wasnt suffering a head injury .. Dutch was suffering from "im a fake ass mf syndrome"
