About fifteen years ago, I purchased an FN FiveSeven. I wanted a good solid pistol with relatively high capacity, decent 'stopping power', and something that just felt natural to shoot. It ticked all the boxes and definitely wasn't a hipster gun. That thing was a nail driver out to at least fifty meters and was by far the most comfortable pistol I had ever shot. I took it all the way out to 150 meters on a couple occasions firing from a bench. Something I could never do with another pistol. The thing was designed from the ground up to be an amazing pistol. I did end up selling it simply due to the cost and availability of the ammunition. Traded it in for a 45 that, while reliable and relatively cheap to run, was nothing like the sports car it replaced. That was a mistake that I actually regret and I wish I could get my original pistol back. Getting a new one is on my list and I to be able to get it soon. Yeah its expensive but I've fired probably close to 300k rounds at the range and it was by FAR the best pistol I ever shot. Super comfortable, accurate, and after doing only an hour of training with the index safety, it is completely second nature. I think I picked up on it by my second or third magazine it was so natural.

@Sniper061
@Sniper061 2 жыл бұрын
@@christiandonis1881 It trades mass for speed. So when it hits it will cause more of a small rifle round wound cavity than a pistol round wound cavity. Much more damage to hard organs like the heart, liver, and muscle tissue than to soft organs like the lungs, intestines, etc. Ammo is also important. The blue tips from FN are good for target shooting but not much else. FN intentionally underloads that ammo. If you want defense rounds, there are good ones out there like Vanguard, Elite, or Speer. Performance from those is easily similar to 9mm with some loads being similar to 10mm.

Had a student shooting a 5.7 in a class I taught and I noticed that at the 3 yard line the target had little round holes and keyhole looking slots. It dawned on me that the bullets were going through the 20 inches of rubber blocks that make up the backstop, hitting the steel plates behind that and bouncing back at the shooter. Had to put a stop to that fast. Noone was injured but we no longer allow 5.7s on the range. Same with magnum loads in .357 or .44.

I’m not really in love with the gun and I’m not really in love with the round. The round was made to penetrate armor and be a personal defense weapon round. You either get a full metal jacket round or you get that blue tip sporting round. The sporting round we get as civilians is neutered and ineffective compared to the armor piercing green tip military and police round. The sporting round doesn’t expand and it doesn’t behave like a hollow point. It behaves like a full metal jacket, cost even more, and is even less available. Unless you’re shooting the armor piercing round against armor, the whole thing is kind of a waste. It’s really just an expensive form of larping really. If you want one for you collection that’s cool but carrying one of these for self defense could be trouble. Since the blue tip sporting rounds behaves like full metal jackets, there could be collateral damage. Regular ‘ol hollow points from your 9mm would be more effective and cheaper. You can actually find them wherever you buy ammo too.

It’s Immediately evident as soon as you pick one up, Everything about that pistola is top-notch!! The ergos. The fit n finish. The serrations and stipple seem to grab ahold of YOU and not the other way round! The optics mounting system is about as well thought out and executed as any out there. Probably the best. Yeah. Personally, I would pick the FN Five Seven as my favourite pistol. Yes, it is expensive but worth every penny. It uses the 5.7 mm ammo, packs a powerful punch and can be silenced too. Pretty much all you want for a pistol. There is a reason why the Five Seven is used by government protection detail like the US Secret Service. That tells you all you need to know about this awesome pistol.

Safety? "I hate it!" However, I'm glad you said you had decided to get over yourself and come to terms with it! Well done. To me that suggests you're able to accept (or at least live with!) new ideas. It's interesting that new shooters have NO difficulty with the safety! That means one must be aware that we all (even me!) have a tendency to want to "have the new, as long as it doesn't tamper with the old!". So, with that in mind, I have to get over myself as well! The more I look at the MRD, the more I can see the "new beauty" in it. It particularly like the fact that the front end is "sloped", not cut off at right angles like the iconic Five seveN. The sights treatment is, for me the kicker! That will almost definitely have a positive impact in the market. As you say it still shoots the same, capacity is the same so FN are prepared to keep what works well, and adapt things that will help it to work better. That's why they are still such a huge player in the world Industry!

Colion I am a huge fan of your channel and contents on gun ownership in general. Your views on the subject are ALL spot on. I especially like the your focus on education of how to use a firearm. You are right on with the idea of focusing on educating the ownership public instead of imposition of more restrictions. My sons and all three of my grandsons have been brought up with guns and because my hands on instruction with them over the years, I am fully confident of their safety orientation and respect for guns. They knew from a very early age not to touch my guns unless I was with them. All they had to do is ask me to go shoot with them and I did. Gun education is the key and I completely agree with you about requiring it if you have the gun in your possession outside of your home. It takes time for a round to catch on and become the norm. Look at how old 9mm is. 5.7 is an absolute adolescent in comparison. NATO recently picked it up and we are seeing a resurgence in interest. I would like to see someone come out with an actual carry size gun chambered in 5.7. It would be a great gun for folks with low grip strength because the slid is easy to rack and the recoil is a nonissue. Granted the grip is going to have to be thicker but If they apply some of the same ideas as we see in the high cap micro 9's it could be manageable.

Maybe I'm too adverse to change, but I like the original more. The slide machine work on the new version looks like they cheaply copied Ruger and Taurus. Nothing against you Colion, simply an opinion of the product.

Its an FN 5.7 with a new chassis.... what 'much' is there to say about it other than to talk about how that new cassis feels, handles, looks?. Its not like the caliber changed, it looks like it even has the same length barrel so ballistics will be the same, same-ish magazines.... you dont need a sit-down, tear-down, review on something like this unless there were major changes made. The problem I have with the Five-7 is it is a niche round. It is arguably one of the most accurate out of a pistol with tremendous speed but, it does come at a higher price and is harder to source. The biggest problem with this is there are literally only 3 firearms that are chambered to run the round making it so that it is not very mainstreamed. I put it in the same category as the 22TCM, 7.5 Bruno, and Federal's new 30SC. They are impressive in ballistic performance, accurate, and provide a capacity advantage over similarly performing rounds of larger calibers. The problem is the demand for them is very low making it difficult to obtain at any local ammunition retailer. It does not make them an inferior choice for defensive purposes or equate to a poor carry choice if one is set on owning these. I just prefer something that is universally and readily available.

The market for 5.7x28 guns is expanding rapidly. FN, CMMG, Diamondback, Kel Tec, Ruger, and Palmetto State are all currently producing guns chambered in the cartridge.
@killacoiler1707
@killacoiler1707 2 жыл бұрын
@@carbon8ed i had heard that Keltec was playing around with the 5.7 but I did not know about Diamondback, PSA, and CMMG had Irons in the 5.7 fire. It is a very capable cartridge that has several benefits one of which is capacity. I just hope that as popularity increases more ammunition manufacturers will tool up and force competition which usually drives prices down. I think that you will find the same to be true of the new Federal 30SC round. Currently S&W is the only one making a firearm chambered using the cartridge much the same way FN was the only pistol chambered in 5.7 until more recently. It like the 5.7 offers a capacity advantage that makes the micro market capable of retaining its current size profile while offering full size magazine capacities.

@@killacoiler1707 CMMG and Diamondback are both making micro-carbines, CMMG has versions of the Banshee and Dissent in 5.7 and Diamondback has the DBX-57. PSA just recently released the Rock which is another full-sized handgun just like the FN and Ruger offerings.

@@carbon8ed I do not follow the carbine market much only pistols so that is my bad. I prefer shotgun for home defense and compact or micro pistols for concealed carry. To be honest, I am considering an M&P Shield Plus Performance Center in the 30SC just to give it a run side by side with my 9mm. Right now the ammo is a bit pricey but I have a feeling if the caliber catches some traction that more companies will start tooling up for it and it will drop in price. The idea of 16 rounds in a stack and a half micro pistol is kind of enticing. Current ballistic reports place it on par with 115gr 9mm. Which is in my opinion the minimum standard for EDC defensive rounds. I do prefer a heavier round. I run Fort Scott Submunition 125gr TUI as my current defense ammo and it is a phenomenal performer. I understand the 30SC is a bit lighter coming in at 100gr but it is moving a bit quicker and hits with almost the same muzzle energy as 9mm. I am not apprehensive about its effectiveness as a defensive caliber at all. As a Forensic Psychology grad student I have studied many statistics and to this day .22LR holds the top slot for the most common caliber resulting in civilian deaths. The 5.7 if they could scale down the size of the firearm would also be a viable concealed carry with decent capacity; however, IMO the current iteration is better suited to a duty rig in open carry. I wonder if we will see the 30SC adopted as a PCC caliber? I would imagine that it would make for quite an accurate and zippy round out of a 12 to 16" barrel with some pretty impressive ballistic stats.

If FN wanted some radically new, they would shorten the barrel as much as possible while maintaining ballistic effectiveness, cut down the grip height, and slim it down to a single stack. Figure a five seven being 3/4 inch shorter barrel and slide, with a 9 round singles stack flush, and 10 round extended mag. Smooth off the attachment rail to a sleek tubular shape. Lose the manual safety for both a back grip safety and split trigger safety. Two automatic safeties, no bulky thumb safety. Come standard with a trench on top that has a fiber optic sight sunk into the front and two in the back, flush with the bottom of the trench. In other words, from a side profile, you cant even see the sights. Just a smooth top front to back. Completely snag free, fast draw, 9+1 high velocity ammo, in a paper thin compact size frame. Include a built in transparent window in the sides of the grip to see round count at a glance.
