We put up with A LOT of mistreatment from cops as citizens in general (a lot of which is required for them to do their job), and give them a lot of leeway in return (sometimes more than we should). That's the one case where they very clearly had the opportunity to repay that debt, and in more than a few cases they simply haven't done so. In one case, if I remember right, they tried to bar armed parents from going and doing what they weren't willing to in order to save their kids. Shameful.
