Great review Gundog. The Latvian Rations are some of my favorites. The rye bread is really good. I like the porridge. The jam did look a little unusual. I like the extra coffee you get with these rations. The hard candy is a nice bonus. Have a great day my friend 🤝

I love the rye bread in these such a game changer. Latvian are a great ration I think only issue I have is the jams need a box or better containment they usually pop or leak from what I have seen. Awesome Review Gundog!

I think they get roughed up more by logistics, shipping, mail carriers than actual use. I assume they are packaged into a cardboard box case and distributed to the bros and bras right out of the box. Probably saves a lot of breakage.

I did that too, and like I say in the vid I can see someone just pouring the stew right over the bread as that made a pretty good combination. That being said I can promise you there is a Latvian soldier that ate that the same way I did somewhere haha! Cheers Hristo

Greetings from Australia. That main is a mixture of the kasha (grain porridge) and the tushenka (stewed beef) you get in Russian rations. You can also buy it with pork instead of beef, but the stewed pork reminds me too much of Spam. Russian and Latvian rye bread is great with tvorog- quark "cheese"- and some thinly sliced ham and pickles. I eat it as an open-faced sandwich. The bread is so dense and filling and a lot better for you than regular white bread. The picture on those candies looks like they are wolfberries- also known as goji berries. The only disappointment in that ration is no milk or dairy creamer substitute, as I drink white coffee. If I was in the Latvian army, maybe one of my company buddies could swap my coffee for their tea and sugar. Stay safe, gundog.

Nice to see a new review from you my friend! I have to admit I am crazy about this bread. The complex flavor and the structure makes it so amazing pleasant for eating. It is also perfect in form of fried strips, salted and mixed with crushed garlic-it is a popular beer snack there :) It is not easy to buy such bread in Poland and some bakeries try to recreate this recipe, but it is not that easy. This year one of local bakeries near me did something decent - I mean - similar.

Strange, here in Estonia, I've had this kind of bread my whole life and it's in every grocery store. In fact our word for bread is used only for rye bread. Our word for whitebread has no bread in it. I used to be puzzled watching american tv shows, after the fall of ussr, and seeing them call whitebread bread, also not seeing any actual bread in them, ever. Until I saw gundog open up one of either german or estonian rations that had canned rye bread, and heard him call it such, didn't even know americans knew what it was. Sadly one trend that comes from the west, that I absolutely loathe, is the preslicing of bread and packing it in plastic. It makes the crust not nice and crunchy, and a lot of taste gets lost in the process as well. I pity people who haven't tasted freshly baked bread or whitebread that hasn't been sitting on a shelf, wrapped in plastic. They have no idea what they're missing.

@@raifthemad I live in a "transition zone" where we call bread both wheat and rye. But the US or UK bread looking like puffed toast is something unknown in Poland. The toast bread appeared here maybe 20 years ago.

@@deliciousMRE Same here, and it's always presliced and stuffed in a plastic bag. Tastes like cardboard compared to the good stuff. No wonder in american movies the kids always ask for the crust to be cut off, it's soggy and not at all appealing, while with proper wheat and rye breads, crust is my favorite, the tastiest and nice and crunchy often as well.

I think the Estonian rations come with rye bread or it could be pumpernickel. Great video by the way. Also forgot to ask, is your little dog still about? Sherman? normally with packaging like that the jam and honey are over everything from being busted open! i wish all military's would switch over to squeeze packs like most peanut butter comes in! those bust way less often!! and eat that main cold it would be solidified fat in every bite! how's the gruesome twosome by the way? they get their share?

The addition of a hot sauce, or red pepper flakes, black pepper etc would be great for this ration. I always add pepper to the beef and barley it adds a nice kick
