This is something no one seems to mention at all. The Cd does offer some definitive experiences in some cases. I really always think of the arranged versions of the music because its what I mostly play.

I know right. I was annoyed to see how SNK doesnt seem to include the ast in their current stuff the last time I saw. I downloaded Kof 96 on PS3 and it wasnt there. They also cheated us out of them with the soundtracks of their pre orders for KOF 13 and 14.

My jaw about hit the floor when I heard Athena's theme song being sung in KOF '94. What a music change! Previously I just thought a lot of these music changes were just really minor ones, but these are actually really impressive changes! :O

I like that they took the time to rework the soundtrack of their games (obviously to promote the CD system) in the best possible way. When I heard the Athena's theme back then, I was immediately hooked.

They are both good but I like AES versions better. The sound being played off the chips is way cooler 😎.

Same. Most people seem to prefer the arranged tracks, but I like the originals much more. The extended versions often (well, not always!) sound like a "light" version of the AES/MVS originals. After all, it's video gaming - and the chipsound mixed with samples simply fits better.

I believe the NEOGEO sound quality for both cartridge systems AES/MVS is PCM audio. NEOGEO CD sound is .WAV format. SNK recorded different arrangements for the CD version because CD's had more available space and were cheaper to manufacture. The difference in sound quality is outstanding! Not only cleaner and more distinctive sounding but you can also listen to each separate instrument.

That's correct. If you put a CD game into a regular CD player, it will play the soundtrack track by track.

Not only because of WAV format, they actually reworked the music and sound effects for most of the Neo Geo CD games, even the oldest ones. That was remarkable. Unfortunatelly the Neo Geo era died along with the arcade market, the last KOF that truly made success on the AES/MVS was '98. The Neo Geo CD was already dead by then. I miss mine.

So there is no modulated music for Breakers, both versions has arranged music but played in low bitrate on AES/MVS system obviously.....like in Metal Slug 4/5, Matrimelee, etc. Interesting, good comparison!!

So frames are missing from the CD version does that mean AES is arcade perfect or closes too the arcade and also isn’t the MVS cartridges what they used in the real arcade machines I understand that the Neo Geo CD will have better music as it is a media format so does that mean AES is superior in gameplay or are the frames not noticeable in the CD version

You do realize that the AES is the same hardware and gamecartidges as the MVS right? It's not trying to be like the arcade machine, it literally IS the arcade machine.

Ah it was simply cheaper because CD's where much cheaper to make, as they do not contain a chipset like a cartridge. The upside was they had a plenty of space for CD quality audio, the downside was, CD's caused long loading times, especially for the NEOGEO as it only sported a 1X speed CD-drive. Other than that, versions between AES and CD are the same.

They're so much the same that if you dump crossed swords 2 which is a CD exclusive, to a cartridge, your AES will play it just fine.

It absolutely floors me how much better the CD version soundtracks are compared to their cartridge brethren. It's probably one of the CD consoles best selling points other than being cheaper. I knew that the audio would be higher quality by virtue of being on a CD format, but I didn't know it would be THIS good. I'm especially impressed with Far East of Eden's soundtrack on the CD, it's both epic and soothing. So glad I decided to buy a Neo Geo CD console, I can't wait for it to show up on my doorstep! :)

I was hooked to the arranged soundtracks the first time I played KOF '94, probably a year after it was released on the system. The fact that they reworked (or/and changed) most of the soundtracks is proof that they cared to provide quality audio as well as promoting the console. I hope you ordered a Neo Geo CDZ for faster loading time! (don't worry it doesn't make that much of a difference)

@@MrFox_o I'm actually pretty new to the Neo Geo scene. I wasn't even a year old when the AES was released here in the states, and the MVS cabs were brought here exactly one day before I was born! lol I've been trying to find some cool and/or obscure consoles to add into my setup and Neo Geo has been on my radar for awhile now. I wanted an AES at first, but the price for the console and it's games steered that ship completely in the other direction. Even the flashcart for the AES costs an arm and a leg. I became attracted to the NGCD due to price and accessibility for most of its library. I am aware of the loading times, but its honestly not too different from a Saturn or 3DO. Most consoles I grew up with were CD based so I'm pretty used to loading times. The only games that seem to have real loading issues are late release fighting games like KoF 99 and the Last Blade games. Everything else seems to be pretty manageable. I was looking into CDZ's, but they're reported to have overheating issues on top of being too expensive for its own good. I ended up buying a really good condition original top loader model complete in box for a very reasonable $250. Now I'm just waiting for it to show up.

Hahaha. Thank you for the Garfield like. That's great that you like to use original forms to play Neo-Geo. But we also welcome ports and emulation as well if you like to go that route. We're not these radical purest that only want original hardware/software or mock you for not doing so. There will be more Neo Geo content, I'm a fan of the system. Funny enough I do not own Magician Lord in CD form. I tend to play and record all NGCD related content with the original discs. Garfield is always a good choice!

There is no arranged NGCD music for Magician Lord, same for AOF, Ninja Combat and maybe some oldest other ones.

The CD version of Magican Lord sounds exactly the same, at least I never noticed any difference to the AES/MVS version. But it's a great OST indeed, it makes the perfect atmosphere for a medieval/fantasy themed platformer.

Neo CD cheated. It was simply audio playing on a CD and not the hardware. You could put the disc in any CD player and play the tracks. The NEO GEO music was coming from the actual sound chip.

Honestly, I prefer the original Neo Geo music in the most games. The CD arrangements have better quality and more instruments of course, but they often sound tame and sometimes even boring. And I'm annoyed by loading times, but I think that's not the point here.

Sorry I’m not a fan and disagree..AES is soo much more punchy and memorable, you can really appreciate the sound designers squeezing out and inventing new sounds from the Yamaha. Gives neo geo it’s own signature characteristic. Analogue will always sound from it’s time where digital looses those characteristics.

Indeed. Altrough the quality of the CD is a little higher, I prefer the original versions most of the time, it simply fits better to the games. Since the stock AES/MVS has almost CD quality, there isn't much room to "improve" imo.

Both systems play the same, only some frames are missing on the CD games. I personally prefer the original arcade controllers (AES) over the CD ones, and despite the praise they have (the CD gamepad) they were plagued by faulty "d-pad".

Hi. I think Neo Geo used Sanwa switches. True, the AES is the best controller out of the box for the console of all time- the same parts used for their arcade I think. Is the AES arcade controller compatible with the Neo Geo CD?

@@SevenDeMagnus If you mean the original AES controllers, then no. The buttons are custom made parts, and do not feel like genuine arcade buttons in general. The stick itself is a OEM cheaper Seimitsu part. The official Japanese MVS cabs were equipped with Seimitsu octagonal gate sticks (with bright red ball tops) and buttons. The seimitsu joystick part was for many years considered the "official" NeoGeo stick.

Playing the CD versions of the KoF games is especially annoying - these titles have long loading times, and not just before the matches, it's before EVERY ROUND. If you play through the whole game, about 50% of your time is gone just for loading, it kills all the fun imo.
