Here are a couple of changes that has really enhanced my listening experience and music room. Inspired by a number of people here in the VC I decided to try and take some small steps to make get the most out of the music I love and just thought I would share my experience. Thanks VC.

Thanks for stopping by my friend and welcome aboard. I actually have four different tables I use. I have two vintage MCS tables (6601 and 6603) as well as a Sanyo TP1030. I pick up these vintage tables over the course of time and just can't get rid of them lol. All my receivers are vintage receivers and a few people keep telling me I need to get a modern day, audiophile type receiver. Hopefully one day I can afford one lol. I think there is a plus and minus to the new and old and I just figure the best option is to enjoy both :) Thanks my friend and I look forward to seeing you here around the VC.

lovell andrew I think we all kind of go through phases. For the longest time I just wanted as much vinyl with stuff that I loved in my collection. Dollar bins are havens for that right lol? Then I went to collectables. Mainly seeking grails. Then I went to artist collection. Now I'm at the point of condition and box set collections. I think we often times change and grow with music an our collections just like anything else in life. Eventually we will all mature into the type of collectors we will be for the most part. Great thing is there is now right or wrong. It's just all about making your collection what you enjoy. I tell you what though, I know I have pulled over 200 lps from collection so far and I'm barely at the 1/2 way mark. That has been kind of hard lol.

Yep. I think we all go through these stages of listening and buying music. I guess it's really hard to value a great system/ set up when a vast majority of us have never had the experience in the first place lol. Most of us just went for "HOW LOUD" lol. Matter of fact my awareness of system set ups really didn't even come into play until I wend to a show in Chicago. Going room to room, hearing and seeing those systems, and listening to everyone talk about the "small" things just really got me hooked. I knew I didn't have the $40,000 to build a system, but I did decide at that point to make the most of what I had and could afford. It certainly has been a journey from those first 8 dollar bin records I purchased years ago lol

Great video! I am relatively new to watching VC videos but I am a long time audiophile. You did ALL of the right things in setting up your stereo. You have those B&W's properly set up and that was a wonderful idea of having the record cabinets on each side as the diffusion will be similar in the left and right channels. Good calls also on the wire upgrades, you don't have to spend a ton on cables. As a Martin Logan owner, I am wondering which pair you have. It may be that Marantz is not the right amp t drive them. I have CLS I's and they are a pain to drive, but a good high current amp like a used Classe or Krell should drive the smaller ML's with no problems. Then use your Marantz as a preamp/tuner. Once again, you are on the right track!

I'm sorry :( I had not cable knowledge lol. It really is funny, but it seems in so many cases the sharing of vinyl and the concepts of audio equipment didn't really go hand in hand here in the VC. Most of us, including myself, have spent 95% of our time talking about albums and music and never touching on the equipment and set up. I would have even thought to address my cables if it had not been for tuturle talking about the benefits of it. I have a lot to learn for sure.

@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 9 жыл бұрын
Ron Beaudry Did you base things more off your measurements or did you adjust by ear?
@RocknRonni
@RocknRonni 9 жыл бұрын
By ear. I saw here on you tube the measurements again. So i looked at what i was doing again, because from time to time things get moved. I bought a new man cave reclining couch a while back. Now I was sitting a little to far back, so i moved forward, wow this is better, sweet spot is bigger, I can move my head and the voice is still centered much better. I have tube traps at the first reflection point on the wall but I use the reflective side to reflect the sound here gives a much wider soundstage but it needs to be balanced to keep focus. My bigger tube traps are in the corner to negate the standing waves to help with bass. I read a article in stereophile where they used tube traps with my speakers. so i got some ideas from that. Anyways these measurements just like turntable arm height are just a good starting point. You always need to tweak the setup by ear for your room variables.

Thanks man. I actually kind of did it backwards. I move pieces around over and over (listening to the same piece of music) an then once my ear picked things up just right I then measured to see how close I was to the triangle. Wasn't too bad. I off only about 6 inches :)

+Steve Viau Yep. That is ALL Ikea my friend lol. It is two shelves, one stacked on top of the other. I put doors on the bottom one as you can see. That platform the turntable is on is an extra door I bought and just bought a pair of table legs from Ikea and screw those to the bottom. They are adjustable so you can level it for your turn table. So two shelves, 3 doors, and 2 pair of legs from Ikea and you have this lol.

Love these room tours. The room and listening space looks awesome after the changes. Looks like you have a lot of space in the room and that alone would call for a dedicated space for listening just like you have created now. Looks very inviting and comfy, just like it should. I have been through the changing cable thing for many years and spend crazy money on interconnects and speaker cables so I am not really comfortable commenting on that in detail. But I would nevertheless like to share one observation I have made during my experiments and tryouts: damping of the room with carpets and furniture is cheaper than high end interconnects and in many cases results in more significant improvements of the listening experience.
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 9 жыл бұрын
Any feedback or opinions you have based on your experiences I would love to hear my friend. I am so new to the audiophile side of things that I am just looking to gather information. One thing I was curious about. When it comes to worrying about sound treatments, damping, etc. Does that make as big a difference when playing a system a lower volumes as it might have at much higher levels?
@dubmusiq
@dubmusiq 9 жыл бұрын
mrhoffame Room treatments are essentially about reducing the amount of reflections (or "sound bounces" if you like) of the sound waves in a room. All uncovered space, floors, walls and roofs in a room bounces the sound coming from the speakers. For example: first spot of reflection (bounce) is on the floor just in front of the speaker, then the sound bounces to the wall on the side of the speaker and eventually it hits the wall behind the sweet spot. The result of this are micro echos and the sound looses detail and resolution. The trick is to reduce the number of reflections. The most basic stuff is to put a carpet on the floor, and a chair or couch in the middle of the room, this will improve damping. Store records along the walls and you have diffusers at no cost. On the other hand, too much damping and diffusion will impact the listening negatively as highs might be lost and the sound comes out dull and lifeless. It takes a little bit of experimenting by moving pillows and carpets around the speakers and sweet spot. Sometimes it is beneficial to add some damping behind the speakers, sometimes it will kill the sound. It depends on speaker design. Moving the speaker up close to the wall behind the speaker will almost always result in more bass, move out the speaker on inch at the time till the bass reproduction is optimized. Test toe-in of the speakers, like 45 degrees, or less, listen and change again. It usually takes a few weeks but it is worth it in the end. Taking one change at the time will keep you in control of all the changes, and it will be possible to evaluate the impact of each change. And yes, these simple steps will improve the listening experience even at low volumes. And the neighbors will approve of the change as the sound leakage will also be reduced when you turn up the volume. Cheers, --Michael

The two horizontal racks are ikea shelves. On one side there are 2 2x2 shelves and on the other side that is a 2x4. The Tall one in the back is a 5x5. The ones with the flip top are two shelves I picked up at a local record store. Basically an Ikea advertisement here lol.

Just discovered your channel, great setup and incredible room. I'm sure you know this by now, but I would warn against automatically ditching your older pressings for new box sets, some modern reissue labels do press from the original tapes, but the majority do not, and lots of the new box sets come from digital sources. Your older pressings may very well sound better (obviously labels like MoFi and Analogue Productions are exempt from this).

Thanks so much for checking out my channel my friend. Really appreciate you stopping by. Yeah, with the box sets, new pressings, originals, etc..I just kind of play it by ear. I don't keep a clear rule on having old, new etc. I just kind of take each as I take it. Especially right now I focus more so on near mint/ mint pressing and not as much on if it is new or old. So it really is different. Like the Genesis box sets I think sounded just as great at the originals pressing if not better. Same with the Dire Straits. Now I recently purchased a Twisted Sister Stay Hungry reissue and I thought the original l had sounded better so I kept both lol. I just really want my collection to be clean from A-Z. I think the fact that I listen to so much music on so many different formats, and different systems, I have just kind of learned to trust my ear. There is even a lot of stuff I think sounds better on cd than any original or reissued vinyl. Man..I'll shut up because I could go on all night talking music like this LOL.

With due respect, Is there an admittance amongst the audiophile community with the possibility of ‘music hoarding’ ie Sometimes the LP is played the once & filed away?? I have two systems but try to restrict purchases now for fear of simply having ‘too much’ music to hand.. I understand having a collection and it’s addictive I admit.... but then noted you have a cost effective way of selling to buy a better production.... Sometimes we have to take stock while enjoying the experience of collecting... I’m thinking of myself as well!! I love this hobby, thanks for inviting us in to your private space 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 4 жыл бұрын
I think I understand what you are saying. In my opinion I think that it is just such a subjective thing that it's hard to draw a clear line. I mean even with someone like yourself that tries to restrict purchases....there are probably millions of people out there who would call you a hoarder for having two systems and owning vinyl at all considering you can every song you currently own on a laptop (In their words of course not mine lol). To me a collection, no matter how big or how small, should be one simple thing...it should be a reflection of who you are. Period. If you look at each record you have and it is something that you actually like....to me it doesn't make a difference if you play it 3 times or 300 hundred times. It's a true reflection of you. Just like I would say that if a stamp collector or a baseball card collector doesn't look at every single piece in their collection equally...that doesn't confirm they are a hoarder. Now if the impulse it just to grab any pile of records, stamps, or baseball cards you see just because they are "there" then that to me that is crossing into the hoarding realm. I have just always found it weird that most of the time the right amount of records we think people should have....is the amount we decide to have for ourselves lol. A guy sent me a message one time and said I had too many records. He only had 982 records. So of course my first thought was...how was 982 number made the official number of records a person should have ? LOL I never voted on that LOL. I think the key is having rule set behind your collection. My #1 rule was that I will never put anything into my collection that I didn't actually. I always said my collection is only filled with things that either have a melody I want to hear again, or gave me a feeling I want to feel again. If it does that...it is officially open to being in my collection. If that number is 2000, 5000, or 10,000 I really don't even pay attention to. At the time I made this video I added the next rule of condition. Now this meant being something I like wasn't good enough. It had to fit condition criteria too....and I'm still functioning off those set of rule to this do. So IMO the rules you set for yourself should determine the direction of your collection and not the number of records. Which is why I also tell people you shouldn't even worry about if you have too many or even too few records. How does your collection make you feel and represent who you are and fit into your rules? That is all that matters. Thanks for stopping by my friend. I love having these type of conversation with other music lovers! Great stuff. Stay safe and healthy !!! :)

Mo-Fi's are nice, in fact they are very good. Don't overlook imports though. The first Dire Straits record, on the Vertigo (Dutch, I believe) label. The American pressing is still really good, but OMG when I heard that import! Another really good one is Magazine, by Heart on the original Mushroom label, if you can find it. im not so picky about my records the pops and things are part of the record experience i think. it makes it more real for me i guess. what are your thought on record Execs saying that vinyl is just a fad and not important enough to devote a lot of time to.
@mrhoffame
@mrhoffame 9 жыл бұрын
I agree. For the longest time I didn't care about the pops and things. Even now with my "clean out". I'm not getting rid of things because they have scuffs or maybe some ring wear and stuff like that. Most audiophile would say if the cover is not perfect and regardless of how clean it plays if there are scuffs or marks..they don't want it. Right now I don't care if the cover has wear or vinyl has marks. I only care if it plays almost perfect. I'm sure sometime in the future I will go through clean out bad covers lol. I think as vinyl lovers we all go through stages of what we like and want. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to collect vinyl. Your collection needs to make you happy! Screw everyone's else thoughts on if your collection is good or not. I don't think vinyl collecting if a Fad. I think its popularity in pop culture (such as seeing vinyl in so many movies, commercials, and ads) may be a bit of fad that could go away, but as far as vinyl being a media that music lovers desire and continue to spend millions of dollars on? That is in now way a fad. Music is about more than just Sound Waves. Other than that we would never buy posters, go to concerts, every album cover would be plain white, and so forth lol. Pretty much ANY collector or anything want's Tangible things to own. Vinyl is the most Tangible think music collectors can own. I mean what if a baseball card or stamp collector said he was going to get rid of all his baseball cards an stamps and just scan a picture of the front an back onto his computer. Now he can look at his collection on his computer LOL. We would think that was totally silly right? Well the same things go for us vinyl collectors. Especially with the Internet now where it takes not effort to find albums. It will not go away anytime soon. IMO lol

Ha ha!! Good eye. I've owned 3 Marantz over the past few years. A 2270, 2230, and this 2275. You probably saw one of the others in an old vid lol. There are a lot of great vintage receivers out there for sure. Personally I had VERY nice Technics, Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui, Craig, and Realistic as far as perfect, restored receivers that I've ran for a good period of time. Of those the Marantz is certainly at the top of the list and Sansui 2nd, Pioneer 3rd. Right now I run the Marantz 2275 in the living room and Sansui G-5000 in my bedroom. Never been happier. It is just hard, in my experience, to compete with the power of the Marantz. ...and not talking about how loud you play your music, but more so the fullness and power of the sound at low to mid level volumes. Those things are just beast!! So many great vintage options out there though. Hard to go wrong with many of them :)

Thanks for your reply. I had tried to setup my inventory of Vinyl Albums, CDs, DVDs, Games, Books, Hi-fi components, etc. on an Excel Spreadsheet, but I wasn’t highly proficient at it. I was spending weeks trying to find a good inventory software, and found an app for less than $10.00. I would have been willing to pay 10x the amount for it. I had found the app in the Apple Store called, “MyStuff2 Pro.” This app was a God-sent. A few of my friends have purchased the app with no regrets as well. I was able to customized or tailor the app the way that I wanted. I have been using this app for a few years, and I now have close to 3K items in this app, and it has a barcode scanner on it-sweet! You (and those whom are reading this) should check out the reviews and the detailed descriptions of what this app can truly do. I was blow away and you might be too. Since the app is on my phone-I carry it wherever I go. It has saved me time and money, so I am not making duplicate purchases, and you can locate things in your inventory much quicker and more efficiently. Have you ever been asked, “If your house was on fire and you can only retrieve a few items, what would they be? For me, this would be one of them….Enough said!

mrhoffame Judging from your accent/dialect I would guess that it's a pretty long way from Copenhagen, but thank you anyway! :) Since your room is pretty(!) crammed with vinyls and stuff, the most realistic improvement would probably be to stick some absorption on the ceiling to mitigate the reflection from the speakers to the ceiling to your chair. You could also put some absorbers behind the speakers to mitigate the reflection from speakers to front wall to your chair. Finally, bass traps on the corners are always nice as well - if you can fit it in somehow! :D

Wow nice idea. HiFi people are so OCD and gear focused. I'm doing same but with focus on a huge painting (nothing electronic). Going from my 4415 to a power amp digital system, all white and silver. I listen to cuts, rarely whole vinyl so I'm going digital to focus on the music. Swapping the Pioneer Plasma for a painting, lol. 😊👍

You know it is kind of funny because as much as I love vinyl, I would say 65-70% of my listening is actually listening to cuts and not entire records from front to back lol. I'm sure that is why I do all the formats when it comes to music be it vinyl, cd, cassette, and mp3. I have moved since this video and I will doing a new updated room tour in about a week. Keep and eye out if you are curious to see what I call the new "Boom Boom Room" LOL>

I don't know man. I got a Sansui G-5000 and I still favor the Marantz. I find that I tend to like receivers that have a fuller/stronger low end at lower volumes. Being able to hear more of a thickness at lower volumes with having to turn up the bass input and I have found that the vintage Marantz do that better than any other. Its all about our ear of course lol.

Bro way to got Gratz welcome to the club, I don't know if you watch many of my videos but I have always been into how can I get the most out of my stereo because its more enjoyable to me when it sounds better. When I can hear more music.Next a fellow once asked about 20 years ago how is the quality of your record collection? and so I said its all premo stuff no junk all vinyl is minty. He told me everyone thinks their records are a lot better than they really are. I thought to myself yes thats true for other folks, but not me because i am real fussy i don't buy records that are not minty. Then you kinda have to discover for yourself what collecting is for you. I was buying the whole set, lets say I had all the David Bowie records but i really only listened to about 6 of them, the rest just sat on the shelf for over 20 years i never listened to them so I thought this is a waste, why do I have these if I don't listen to them. so I sold all of them and bought Minty 1st edition Japan pressing of the ones I do love. It took some time because I will not pay the high retail they want on ebay. I just keep looking and eventually I find the one I want at a price I like. Then I started to go through the entire collection. I always thought you could pick any record and it would be a great record because i was fussy, but NO, when I started going through them I found lots of lp's that were not near mint, lots of records I never played, and then when I did i wondered why did I buy this piece of junk record? well I bought them because they were collectable, but the music was only so-so. not bad, but not something I would sit down and listen to. Life is to short to listen to so-so music when there is so much great music to listen to. So now I have 3 empty boxes. I used to have around 1,400 records now just over 1 thousand but I have up graded almost everything except a few like that Gun record I see in your video thats a really good one but my lp surface is really nice but the cover has just a little ring wear starting on the top what I would like is for Rhino or analogue productions to reissue it or maybe find a original copy on the yellow epic still in the shrink! can you say Grail anyways, I bought a spin clean and a disc doctor 5 and like you started to clean all my records and I still have a long way to go lol, but I have improved the quality immensely while reducing the quantity and not spending any new money, got a tube preamp, wow and a vibration control Ginko cloud base for my turntable www.gingkoaudio.com/cloud10.html, wow a new phono pre out of china Jasmine really nice so things are sounding better over here. ok latter bro Ron

That is the one thing I have learned about collecting over years is that many of us change as collectors over time. I don't regret any of the "stages" I have gone through at all. I just understand that over time I will probably change again and again. When I first started collecting I had a crappy Sony turntable and really paid no attention to overall "quality" of things. My goal was to simply go out and get as many new records as I could find because there was so much music I love. I hit dollar bins like my life depended on it lol. Later I got more into grails/ collectables. I have recently sold a number of my grails and clean mofi and 180gram and new pressings of some of my favorite "dollar bin records" are my new focus along with paying more attention to my equipment . In the step I'm in now I did pay as much attention to things like ring wear or scuffs and marks. I have strictly been focused on mint plabyback of all my pieces. I'm sure my next step in the future will be clearing out anything with marks or covers that are not mint.

Ha ha! I'm sure my friend. I do have a system in my bedroom and a system at my desk there. What I have found so far is that when I am in passive listening mode (doing stuff around the house, on the computer, etc)...I don't mind those systems at all. When I really want sit, focus, and experience the piece..I go to the chair lol. It's kind of weird, but there is something about "watching" each system perform that I really love.
