Having been to the factory, I can tell you: both are the same. It supposedly comes down to where they are going. Pinhais is meant to be available in specialised stores mainly whereas Nuri can be bought in some supermarkets (especially in Austria) so it's all marketing placement, or so I was told. As for the number on the back, we've long thought it was the day of production but were told it is actually just the batch number. If the first mackerel of the year is canned in march, it'll still be 001/20**. Also, year on can is year of production and year on wrapping is "best before end of-" You should visit Pinhais someday!

Using the sardine olive oil to make some rich toast, yeah, yeah. Use a nice crusty bread, dress both sides with the oil, you can get about 4 slices, cut that fresh loaf of bread to half inch slices, coat both sides with olive oil, a dot or two of mozz or cream cheese, some fine minced sweet onion and shove it into a 350f oven as it heats up for like 8 minutes, no more than 10. After that? I typically eat it separate but I've used the sardines to make a dip and spread that on cut up bits of that toast. Sometimes? I get some cheap shrimp and make shrimp dip, and save the sardine olive oil for later to make toast for that.

This is 1000% a case of a packing facility packing those naked cans in bulk, and then throwing different wraps on them and selling them as different products. A lot of places that process canned fruits and veggies do the same thing. They'll be canning peas or whatever, and have several separate packaging lines for name brand, and then various similar off-brands. It almost seems like the best strategy is to aim for the lowest priced variation a packaging plant is producing (as far as natural products)
