Having been to the factory, I can tell you: both are the same. It supposedly comes down to where they are going. Pinhais is meant to be available in specialised stores mainly whereas Nuri can be bought in some supermarkets (especially in Austria) so it's all marketing placement, or so I was told. As for the number on the back, we've long thought it was the day of production but were told it is actually just the batch number. If the first mackerel of the year is canned in march, it'll still be 001/20**. Also, year on can is year of production and year on wrapping is "best before end of-" You should visit Pinhais someday!

It's like that with canned vegetables, too! My father in law worked at a factory that canned beans and he said the beans were sorted into "quality" and at each level of quality there were at least three or four companies getting their label slapped onto them.

yeah right, was just wondering why those nuris are 9 bucks for him, they are everywhere here. i mean those are usually the most expensive ones still, others can go for 2ish bucks, and tbh, they have a similar quality. and then there are the ultra cheap ones without skin and bones for 1 buck, but who wants those. but im always wondering why more work equals cheaper product with them

Using the sardine olive oil to make some rich toast, yeah, yeah. Use a nice crusty bread, dress both sides with the oil, you can get about 4 slices, cut that fresh loaf of bread to half inch slices, coat both sides with olive oil, a dot or two of mozz or cream cheese, some fine minced sweet onion and shove it into a 350f oven as it heats up for like 8 minutes, no more than 10. After that? I typically eat it separate but I've used the sardines to make a dip and spread that on cut up bits of that toast. Sometimes? I get some cheap shrimp and make shrimp dip, and save the sardine olive oil for later to make toast for that.

To answer your question about what makes an especially good can of dines, i find its when they pack em extra to the brim with whatever liquid it's sitting in so that there is zero oxidation at all and so it tastes fresher. This is 1000% a case of a packing facility packing those naked cans in bulk, and then throwing different wraps on them and selling them as different products. A lot of places that process canned fruits and veggies do the same thing. They'll be canning peas or whatever, and have several separate packaging lines for name brand, and then various similar off-brands. It almost seems like the best strategy is to aim for the lowest priced variation a packaging plant is producing (as far as natural products)

When it comes to ameliorating the long-term consequences of neural damages, the recommendation of all my doctors has been fish! So, I've been going out of my way to add new fish to my diet. Matthew got me hooked on King Oscar's as a recommendation for a daily driver, and I've since gotten into more high-brow canned fish. Nuris have been a favorite. Good to know the box doesn't change anything, I'll save money and avoid the online orders for pinhais. My grades are getting better, and I'm more likely to remember things. I've been on canned fish for almost two years, now.

Just a thought, for these taste test that are close to the same products, what if we introduce a palate cleanser in between e.g. pink pickled ginger from japan, maybe a dill pickled, some water after.. introduce some acidity to cut through the oil then cleanse. Perhaps it would help noticing the differences

What’s cringe is the overuse of cringe, such that everything and everyone is cringe, which is a form of virtue-signaling, as if you yourself are not cringe but hypersensitive and attuned to the cringeworthiness of reality, and everybody else should show deference and respect to your cringe-radar. Maybe THAT’s what’s ‘cringe’. Hmm 🤔

My favorite are the Brunswick S/B-less herring (sold as sardines, I know there's some confusion around this and I don't really understand it myself). Anyway, regardless of what you call them, they're really good and cheap. Maybe I'm a baby for getting them skinned and boned but I love the convenience and ease of shoveling them in without worrying about bones or odd textures.

The biggest difference I think is actually the plastic wrapper on the Nuris. It might cost a bit more, so they only use those on the export cans to preserve the wrapper during shipping and handling

Not sure if you've ever done Santo Amaro, but they are my favorite Pilchards currently. Pretty darn smokey/salty, but fits my personal taste.
