Actually - I'm not sure if they want to fix and/or change the XBox marketplace. I noticed an interesting little detail: Avowed is listed on Battlenet. I wonder if Microsoft intends to make use of Battlenet for more games in the future. Battlenet is a pretty good platform btw and it is well established in the PC space. As for the handheld - I expect it to be a portable PC like the Steamdeck, not a console. I also wouldn't be surprised if it uses Windows.

I live in western NC and the fastest internet available in my area is 25 mbps. I can get it up to 40 with port forwarding, still slow. It takes me 4-12 hours to download one game. All digital is not a viable means for gaming what so ever. Plus, having a physical copy of your favorite game is just a nice bonus for people who like collecting.

The difference in the Switch is they opened up the platform and partnered with a lot of 3rd party and indie publishers, which caused the Switch to become the mobile indie machine today.

Xbox's biggest failure is not releasing enough good exclusives, they have killed the Halo brand since 343 took over and failed to create anything new, hence why they had to buy so many 3rd party developers. Sony spent the PS4 era churning out banger after banger for their exclusives and guess what? gamers want to play good games, simple really. And the cherry on the cake is the middle finger to physical collectors, the 360 era collectors editions are unmatched. Yes the total number of digital games is higher now but there's still one third of the market that buys physical still and over half of AA and AAA games on Nintendo Switch in 2023

I think we as gamers need to make more noise about the price to digital connection. When I was paying 50/60 dollars for a new game with a physical disc, I knew I had that for as long as my console could run which made the price sensible. There's still tons of gamers that would love to keep buying physical copies. It's the companies that are doing everything they can to push people into a digital-only future. Avowed, a major first-party game for Microsoft, will release without a physical disc, Hellblade 2 no physical, Starfield won't launch from the disc(needs an update) etc. They're pulling this crap and then citing statistics claiming that 90% of gamers "prefer" digital games. No wonder - when physical copies either aren’t available or, when they are, they're not playable from the disc and need a big update...

I think the everything is a "Xbox" will more damage their brand than do good. Not everything is an Xbox you can't tell me streaming your game from a phone or TV will give you the same gameplay experience as playing it on a Xbox or a high end gaming PC what is an experience even better than Xbox Series. There are clear tier differences of experience, pay more = better experience, pay less = worse experience, so when someone plays a game on a streaming service or a Series S instead of a Series X, their experience will be compromised and so the brand name Xbox will lose is prestige.

Why aren't people seeing that we are in a second videogame crash? The big players are overspending on shovel-ware and shutting down studios left right and center to cut costs. The cycle has become Buy Studio - > Force them to make a game quickly -> Game fails -> Studio is shut down. It happened to Volition, Happened to the Concord Dev and it will happen to many more. Even some indie studios are being hit. Sequels to loved independent games like Cities Skylines, Planet Coaster and KSP all release broken, coincidentally when big publishers and investors get involved. We need to stop game publishers monopolising and studios going public on the stock market as it starts this cycle.

The only thing that gives me hope with this strategy is that if there ever will be another Spyro game, we can get it on PS5. Not that I have a problem with it coming to PC, but I like a series of games I bought for a system in one place, and I have the trilogy on PS4. A lot of people here pretending like they actually care who makes their games but we all know you could barely even name a single person on the dev team of your favourite game of all time. (Not including famous directors like Kojima or Todd Howard etc.) Instead of pretending like we care about who is making a game we should just say whether we like a game or not based on what we actually played. You cannot complete with Sony by copying their exclusive approach; it costs more money for Microsoft to convince publisher to skip PlayStation and in turn this hurts the profitability and health of Xbox business. No. Play anywhere = buy on xbox and you automatically own it on the PC store (not steam) + stream to your phone. This is an Xbox = buy xbox games through a 3rd party storefront on hardware that isn't necessarily affiliated with xbox (no xbox needed) A few months ago it was that games were selectively chosen to transition over to PS before that it was only 'legacy' titles that would appear on PS and now it's "There is no red line". This isn't old news being repackaged so much as this is a progression from Microsoft and Xbox and one that has happened practically overnight as far as corporate timescales are concerned. There has very clearly been an internal power struggle going on in Xbox.

I’m not surprised Xbox going all in on new games on Gamepass day one did not end up working out. We saw the film industry backtracked after going all in on day one streaming. The numbers came in later and revealed subscriptions don’t offset the loss from purchasing. It is worse for video games since most people play less than three different games per month. What good is a catalogue of over 1,000 games at once when you only play like three different games a month? With streaming you can go through multiple movies or an entire season in under a week.

One thing... Activision hasn't made Xbox suddenly make money outside Activision. The rest of their gaming segment aside from ABK has continued to drop YOY... ABK isnt a magic switch that has made Xbox outside of ABK profitable. Hence, them becoming a 3rd party publisher. From a financial perspective, Xbox has been an absolute mess both before and after the ABK purchase.
