You ask about which lathe I would choose to take home. Being honest & living in England, none. There is a small round column milling machine & these are popular here. As it happens, I have recently purchased an unfinished Dore-Westbury milling machine & am about to start finishing building it. It was these far eastern round column milling machines that took the market away from the kit built Dore-Westbury. Don't worry, I have already re-designed the Mandrel & bearings. The outer quil & its outer casting are present, but the mandrel material is missing. As was the upper cross tube, for which I have already found a replacement. Both lead-screws are also missing. Not a problem as I have the British model maker's lathe, Myford ML7-R. It started out as an ordinary ML7 & now has a Mk1 super 7 head-stock & Mk2 clutch. Plus the latest saddle. An exceptional bed & me building it.

Mr. Pete great video I really enjoyed seeing all the wonderful American made shop equipment. I don't think all that rust came form a night of rain and you did mention the roof had a hole in it. It would take a lot of work to restore some of those machines but I feel that it would be well worth the effort. Think of the alternative Chinesium junk. That brings up the little atlas lathe you picked up. I don't think you paid too much for it because of the comparable ones available today. Just think if you were to go out and buy a brand new Chinesium lathe, you'd be making a "How I improved my new lathe video. I'd try your locksmithing skills on the cabinet. Sometimes if you can find a key that fits, you can giggle it around while pulling the key in and out, also while trying to turn the key and it will open. If you don't succeed to open it, those locks sometimes have a number on them. Find a key that will fit the lock, write the number down and a good locksmith should be able to cut you a key from the sample you give him that fits into the lock and the number. Please don't drill out the lock. I've watched many videos of idiots smashing open a safe only to find it empty. They complain about it but in the end they destroyed a $2-300 safe that could have been opened by an experienced locksmith and resold. Years ago I was able to salvage a 36" x 36" x 48" safe made by the Reliable Safe company in Covington KY. I didn't have the combination so after trying myself I took it to our local locksmith. he had it open in a day by drilling a hole just above the dial. he wrote the combination down charged me $75.00. I welded up the small home he made and now I have a functioning safe. There was only a few paperclips and scraps of paper in the safe when he got it open. The locksmith told me the safe was made around the turn of the century, late 1800's to early1900's. thanks again for another great video.

Thirty years ago I bought a 'Craftsman Commercial' branded 12x36 with the underdrive cabinet from a local glass factory in town. It was new in the origninal crate, never used. I paid $200 cash. I was driving a Ford station wagon at the time and I brought it home in the back of the wagon Its been one of my favorite tools in the shop ever since. I've always wanted a smaller precision lathe too but everyone I found at auction so far went for nearly what they sold for new. I have that same cabinet that was under that lathe here, I bought the cabinet by itself for $10 at a local auction about 10 years ago. It was set up as a tooling cart between two machines in a pharmaceutical company's maintenance shop. Knowing what I do about the 6" version, and not seeing all the misc small parts with it and its condition, I likely would have bailed at around $150 or so, but may have gone higher if I didn't have a lathe.

That hurts me to see all this machinery being left to rust. Good luck on lock picking, I know you can do it. There was potentially good stuff there and I would have bought some if there as well. Enjoy the challenge of restoring it. Fodder for many upcoming videos. Did you video all this with an I phone?

Fun auction, especially when Mr. Pete gets a steal. Bet that is an easy to pick lock. A large vice grip may also turn the entire thing.

I know, but at least it’s not for heroin like about 25% of the population

I have that same lathe with every attachment available. A little history; it was used to create knobs at the Jimmy Carter center.

I hope you do videos cleaning up the lathe and making it operational. Also videos making some small projects. Thanks

Great score on the Cardex cabinet! As for the Atlas, well, I've already got two lathes that don't work, so I wouldn't pay much for a third.

That was a great auction video. That lock should rake open easy and if not, try a few tool box keys. My Mack tool box key would open the cabin door locks of some expensive aircraft.

Many years ago, I repaired one in similar shape. I did a lot of stonework on the ways.
