"Star shaped pattern" (4.58) otherwise known as torx…. Good idea on the cold air intake, but ideally it has to be in front of the header panel (where the radiator bolts on) not under the hood, where it gets mainly HOT air, or inside a box with a tube to the outside air.

You just came up with an efficient way of sucking really hot air into your engine. If you made a shield out of sheet metal that isolated the filter from the engine bay, and just drew air from behind the headlight housing, it may have been semi functional. I get what you were trying to do, but it’s not a good idea.

Considering a stock filter barely flows over 300cfm of air i can understand how you could feel the extra power from that set up as the Spectre filter does flow a considerable amount of air compared to stock...However, you leave abit of power off the table by allowing the much hotter underhood air as opposed to outside temperature air which will always be cooler than under hood by a considerable amount even if its hot outside. The reason a car feels faster in cooler air is its more dense (more oxygen rich) being cooler and with most factory air/fuel ratios being about 15% or more rich from the factory, the cooler air leans the fuel mixture a bit which helps give it make more power with cooler air...Your power is coming from better air flow in general over the restrictive air filter and nothing more but if you can draw the cooler outside air like it was stock youll be even more happy with the results...Maybe not as throaty sounding but power wise a big plus Its a great mod but you can do better by keeping the factory air box with a high flow filter...You can get a high flow replacement filter (K&N style) off ebay for under 13 dollars shipped. I just purchased an 05 P71 air box assembly with the larger 80mm mass air flow sensor to replace the factory air box in my 01 Marquis (with proper calibration for the larger mass air in my case)...The P71/Maurauder box is a great piece by Ford.

I put a K and N rectangular filter in my civilian Crown Victoria for better filtration and reusability. The stock box let's all the air in my car could ever use and it is outside air. The stock intake silencer can be removed for slightly better flow if you need to add at most 1.5 horsepower. Best thing I ever did for my Ford was add a dual exhaust. On the civilian Crown Victoria this is easy because they already have two catalytic converters and mounts for the extra muffler and tailpipe. This modification gives better mileage and 15 more horsepower. If you do not use huge pipes you dont even need mufflers at all as the exhaust note is not rude coming through the stock manifolds and cats. Sounds like a sixties V8 with glasspacks if you get on it hard. Never had complaints from neighbors or passengers or cops.

@SlikLizrd3 жыл бұрын
If your Air Box has 2 sensors : One of them is the Inlet Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor, and the other is the Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor. Both are critical and necessary for the correct functioning of the computer-controlled engine management system. The IAT Sensor fits snugly into the Air Box, and permanent removal of the Air Box WILL cause a problem. Here is how I solved the problem: Removed Air Box. Removed "snorkle" (silencer) from Air Box. The "snorkle" that feeds the Air Box has a very small opening (1.75 inch diameter) which really chokes the air flow at high rpms, so I added a short length of coiled aluminum clothes dryer hose where the "snorkle" was, thus drawing cooler air from forward of the engine compartment. The "snorkle" was removed in later years, replaced by a rubber sleeve that feeds directly to the Air Box. With this mod, all sensors are still in place, no cutting of the factory intake is necessary, and the flat-style K&N filter gives a larger filtering area than the conical style -- and can be cleaned less often.

I've done this to any car I've gotten with a V8 or truck and it does as good and costs nothing. Just a thought. The way money and prices are you can still make improvements for nothing or very little. Your going to toss the box anyhow so why not? If you don't have air you can use something like screen door mesh and put that on top the inside fender plastic and have cold air right at the exposed filter. The stock box has a tiny 2 inch hole to suck the air. That's not enough for a V8. Take horn out or cut that part of the box.

John for your situation its not so easy. You could try locating the IAT sensor into the tube.The problem is the tube is round and that fitting is made to mount on a flat surface so it be a rigged up mess. The real way to improve on your air intake system is to get a airbox and tube from an 04 CVPI like this dude just hacked up. It will require you do some cutting and splicing of wires to use the MAF from the 04 PI as it has the air intake temp sensor built in hence it has 6 wires on the MAF vs the 4 on your stock CV. At that point if you did it you may have to get a retune of your ECM as the air flow velocity with the bigger airbox inlet and zip tube to the motor will be slower than the 70mm tube you have now. I have read that mod with a tune will net you around 10 to maybe 15 HP more.

Also if your looking for a bit more air flow get the air filter for an 03 Mercury Marauder. If its the correct filter it is actually thicker than the OEM one on a standard CV, grand marquis or Lincoln town car and flows a bit more air than the standard one and will still filter out all the dust and junk as your OEM filter and not mess up anything on your motor.

2005+ Vics (like his) don't have an IAC. Instead, they use a drive-by-wire throttle body that the PCM controls to prevent the throttle plate from completely closing thus allowing the vehicle to idle without the use of an idle air control valve. Also, that fancy throttle body can potentially be damaged if you are even remotely rough with the butterfly valve during cleaning - it IS NOT to be treated the same as an older vehicle's throttle body because of the always engaged plastic reductive gear set attached to the actuator motor (the silver shiny thing on the TB) and the sensitive as well as fragile throttle actuator position sensors in use inside. If you break off or skip a tooth on a plastic gear or get a position sensor wet with a harsh solvent through wicking action where the butterfly meets the actuator housing, you could very well destroy the throttle body and have to shell out a couple hundred bucks for a new one.

Phil Carr K&N makes one for around $200-$300 that's actually a cold air intake which this is not.

Thanks man, just did this to my 2011 with straight pipes and a full AC delete. I gotta say, with a full pcm relearn this thing kicks. Cut the fender guards right before the wheels so it's not a hot air intake and so the wheels aren't throwing rocks and such into the engine bay and my god, this is definitely one of the best mods along with a full AC delete. The sound it makes at 5800 rpms is absolutely hilariously over the top. Tempted to have a shop retune the entire pcm to accommodate the higher air flow through the plenum and manifold to really make this thing haul ass. Keep up the good work bud. Edit: If anyone gets the wrench follow this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/noukpKKnotabmq8. It throws a code for incorrect throttle position or incorrect flow whenever you disconnect the MAF or throttle body position sensor. Make sure you do this as to avoid this. (pasted from another youtube video because I don't feel like typing this out again)

Where did you buy this filter??

U should’ve have done custom piping cut a hole thru the wheel well and ran the piping to the ground and build a cover for it then it would be an actual cold air intake the way u did it ur bringing in hotter air than the actual air box itself and u have a slightly better throttle response but no hp gains u actually loose some hp bcuz it’s hot air if u run the intake away from the engine bay all together u probably looking at a 10 to 20 hp gain and better gas mileage bcuz ur bringing in that colder air please if your looking to do this do it right or up be paying more in gas and won’t gain any hp barely a sound difference just take the extra time and do it right check out mightycarmods KZbin channel they will show u everything and they test it

NO. This is not really a performance modification. Your '04's stock air filter box and factory plumbing are ALREADY modified to act as a "cold air" inlet, when compared to the '92- '97 Panthers.

This air filter affect the mpg?
@SlikLizrd3 жыл бұрын
The only time an air filter improves Fuel Mileage is when a DIRTY filter is exchanged for a NEW, CLEAN filter. Clogged air filters WILL hurt your mileage/performance, but one brand of air filter will not improve fuel mileage over another brand of NEW filter in a measureable amount.
@josebeltran20077 жыл бұрын
Did doing this cause any issues with the performance of the car
@aaronsmith71436 жыл бұрын
Jose Beltran Yep he's not increasing performance because it's pulling in hot air which is hindering performance.
@chrispittman52737 жыл бұрын
what about the sensor that plugs into the box itself
@mrelectron62206 жыл бұрын
Chris, if your talking about the two wire sensor that connects to the top part of the airbox on some models that is the air intake temp monitor for the ECM. In which case your MAF sensor will only have 4 wires going to it not six like the one in this video the air intake temp is built directly into the MAF and hence why it has 6 wires the two extra are the intake temp sens.

You're ignorant. More air flow = greater/better performance, so long as the ratios are correct.

4Body2Soul ..... excuse me!!!!!!!!!I'm ignorant???? you are a great fool!!!
@mrelectron62206 жыл бұрын
4Body2Soul if you paid attention that inlet snorkel on that air box was just as big as the air tube that goes to the engine. There was nothing to be gained by hacking up that box and putting on a stupid cone filter to suck in hot air from the engine bay. That is the same air box as used on the Mercury Marauder.
@ziggylothbrook86446 жыл бұрын
The MAF sensor will only use as much air as it's programed to use....for more air to be used you must upgrade MAF sensor and flash the puter.....

this air intake system defeats the purpose because it's pulling in the engine temperature heat making it useless . This a HOT air intake system. It does nothing for the car. in fact it is a downgrade from the factory.

The airbox on the later vics like his flowed very well ( they went to 80mm ziptube) they pulled in cool air and had a good filter that keeps fine dust out. He should have installed a 75mm throttle body off a 5.4 triton truck, its a direct bolt on mod. The extra 5mm does add some power on low end and midrange and you can pull one out of a truck at the scrapyard for 30 bucks.
@thetinpin7 жыл бұрын
TB off a 3v 5.4L? I'm reasonably sure the 2v was the traditional throttle cable design, right? I've not seen that bolted up to a 2v 4.6L Vic... but I'd love to read about it. Any flashing of the PCM needed? Got a link?
