Mrs. Landingham likely influenced Jed Bartlet more than any of the other smart intellectuals he knew. If it wasn't for Mrs. Landingham, Jed may have gone on to do stuff other than public service and politics -- such as a lawyer or doctor. And the smartest thing Jed did was to keep her around while he was governor and president. Even if Jed rarely sought out direct counsel from Mrs. Landingham, her presence and snarky retorts influenced his actions and thinking every day.

@@OrenPanitch Dolores Landingham wasn't killed because the actress died. Not even close. Katherine Joosten was on the _West Wing_ from 1999-2002. She then played Karen McCluskey in _Desperate Housewives_ from 2005-2012. She died of lung cancer in 2012, a decade after leaving _The West Wing._ She was 72 years old. What impresses the heck out of me is that she'd done no acting at all until after her 1980 divorce. In 1982, at age 42, she began acting in community theatre. Seventeen years later, the 59-year-old actress was in the White House (set), being amazing.

Many old people have good things to say, because they have life experiences. However just as many old people are idiots with vastly outdated ideas and ideals. So in summary, one should not respect a person more due to their age. Listen to what they have to say, and see if they are worthy of respect. And respect is earned, not freely given.

That's today, back then it was the norm for men to make more than women despite having been there longer or better at the job. @rcslyman89294 жыл бұрын
@UCl413m4xR9KNB9ptjQFZoEA They may be staff positions, but the technical skill involved in each is different. It's a cook (not a chef) in a what, late 40s, early-to-mid 50s university? Versus an electrician. That's not pay inequity, that's pay for the skill level of the position that the university deems is appropriate. Now, those two English professors on the other hand, that she mentioned right before... Also more in context, this was before the Equal Pay Act of 1963. So... yeah, there wasn't even protection in the law and a lot of people were speaking out about it, and rightly so. Today? They still are, but they're making comparisons like the first one. Taking two jobs with dissimilar workload, technical skill, training requirements, etc, and trying to draw a comparison. Does that mean pay inequity doesn't exist today? No. But that's a very real, and very costly law suit waiting to happen.

Mr. Hopkins has bachelor's degrees in Education and English, teaches 11th grade english as well as a senior writing course, and chairs the department. The electrician is a journeyman working to get his BS in electrical engineering and is on call 5 days a week, as well as for after school events. The cook is home taught and has no degree, she is done by 1pm every day. The wage gap is a lie

Mixed feelings about this scene. On the one hand, I agree that injustice is everyone's responsibility, and evil triumphs when good people do nothing. On the other hand, if you want to get ahead in life, you have to take risks. You can't outsource that responsibility to anyone, but it seems like that's what Mrs. Landingham wants. To have Jed be her White Knight, and come charging to those women's rescue. If I were Jed, I'd say if these women want to stand up for themselves, I'll stand with them. But if they aren't, if they're too afraid to take the risk, don't expect me to either. If that means Mrs. Landingham doesn't want to know me, I'm not going to lose any sleep over that.
@MichaelRobertHart3 жыл бұрын
if the headmaster found out Landingham was rabble rousing to Jed, she would be fired. I think that qualifies as a risk!
