Welcome to Mrs. Cog's Classroom!
Today, I am sharing my method for getting that consistent creamy golden-brown aged effect on pages. I have included written instructions below for your convenience. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments below. :-)
Instructions for the process:
1. select and gather papers, trim, lace and embellishments to dye (maps, text & ledger pad: amzn.to/2CTYMlE , ledger paper: amzn.to/2yoV289 , printer paper: amzn.to/2NQwiu6
2. you will need a large tub or pan for hot tea, Lipton tea bags, hot water or a Keurig machine, oven mitts, one or more cookie sheets and a clothes iron
3. preheat oven to 295°F
4. fill tub with hot tea as you layer paper into to tub
5. remove paper one sheet at a time to place on cookie sheet
6. bake until dry (3-5 minutes after cookie sheets become hot)
7. repeat process for paper embellishments, tags, and doilies etc..
8. for tea dyeing lace, cheese cloth and fabric - do NOT bake, but rather hang to drip dry after soaking in hot tea
9. after pages are baked, iron flat
There are many variations of this process and no right or wrong way to do this other than what you prefer. Often I find that when I make mistakes, the greatest discoveries can present themselves. :-)

I do this technique quite often but I don’t plan my journals that far in advance.....I’m not that organized! But I have stacks of lovely tea dyed paper. One time, when in a rush, I crumpled up a few sheets into balls, and put them in a pitcher of tea in the fridge. I forgot about the paper and when cleaning out the fridge, found the crumpled papers. They were so beautiful, all different layers of color and darker crinkled lines. Now I do this all the time and then dry in the oven. Thanks for your wonderful tutorial videos. I am so glad I stumbled across your channel

I have a tote I have filled with vinegar that I use to strip rusty cast iron that I like to re-season. One dip into the tote and into the oven @ 200° and the papers come out a really pretty rust color with all the splotches and textures we love. Throwing in some nails would get you the same effect to get it good and rusty 💚

Liz, you've answered all the questions that have popped into my head so many times when I have watched your videos. As a beginner and rather haphazard dyer who wants the process completed as quickly as possible, , my biggest lesson is to slow down and enjoy it. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. Xx

I've never tried this but I'm so strangely fascinated by tea/coffee-dyeing videos, LOL. Also (not directed at anyone specific!) but to those who say junk journals are too expensive, the labor of paper dyeing and baking alone I think would cover most of the cost! So much care and time needed
@eveny119
@eveny119 5 жыл бұрын
That's why I asked about alternative drying methods. The oven would be costly, but tea is as cheap as a penny a bag and paper could be scrap or on sale like notebooks are .10c back to school at Walmart, Staples often have coupons, .01c -.50c for a ream of printing paper and the dollar tree 1.00 for watercolor and sketch pads. It real takes time not money.

Oh my Barry friend - I really enjoyed this video :-) I thank you for sharing your secrets with us :-) Some people don't share for some reason or whether :-) Your paper dyeing is so easy and less complicated, that I am doing a head slap to myself because when I do my paper dying with coffee anyways, I discovered to make it dark was to sprinkle the dry ground on the paper, then spraying the paper with coffee in the spray bottle , then baking :-) It turns out beautifully :-) Ive always wondered how people who coffee dyed were able to make their papers darker than mine . Well, there I have it :-) I haven't tried tea dyeing yet . But after seeing this video I am planning to :-) You make it so easy and less complicated and I appreciate that . I'll let you know how they turn out :-) Again thank you for this video :-) Blessed be my Barry friend :-)

I have found that the cheaper brand of tea you have to leave the paper in longer to get a more authentic vintage look. The strongest brand for me Lipton and Tealey if you really want your water very dark and strong you can add cinnamon sticks.

Another suggestion I found was, if you have tea bags that you’ve had for eons and they’re just suspect at this point. You wouldn’t realistically use them for drinking... but for some reason you haven’t tossed them out yet... this is the perfect use for them.

New Subbie here. Enjoyed your tutorial. TFS.. I dye my tags on hot coffee in a mason jar for 8 to 24 hours. Then I lay them on a copy paper box lid lined with double layers of paper towels. Sit them in the sun or by the furnace register until dry. 😆

Sarah Enriquez, I know, you would think so. I use two different kinds for price tags. The little white tags only need the 6 to 8 hours. The larger heavier tags can be left longer. 😃

It has been a blessing to watch you this morning. There was lots of great information given I can apply. I would love to know more about your teachable class. It is something I would enjoy to the fullest because you are clear and concise with your words and that makes you easy to listen to and watch. Can't wait to hear more on the class. Hugs :)

Very useful tips! I dry my papers on a table on our side porch (here in the desert). In the summers, the pages dry in about 10 minutes! :-)

I was gong to ask if it mattered that you put them in the oven or hang them outside. I didn't know if maybe oven helped with the bugs lol

@@chevynovascotia3301 I put them outside when the days are in the mid 70's. I don't like to use my oven for that. Besides, here in the desert they dry in about 15 minutes! I have a 6' board set up to dry them on also.

WHAT SWEET VINTAGE ILLUSTRATIONS YOU HAVE ON YOUR PAPERS. DID YOU PHOTOSHOP THEM? Thanks for sharing...on, btw, did you know that book restorers actually wash papers with really hot water to get the acidic properties out of the paper? So water doesn t hurt paper as long as you dry it sufficiently to avoid mold

LOVE THIS! I love how you chose your papers & made us part of that process. I love the ledger paper (not actually “graph,” graph is the little squares all over) and the tags, as well as that genius tip about the baby composition books!! Omg!! You’re wonderful for sharing your talent. This newbie says Thank you!! 💞

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have been dyeing my sheets one at a time, which of course takes forever. Watching this is such a blessing! And now I am trying the small composition notebooks as well. Great ideas and a lot of help.

Thanks very much for this. I've just tea-dyed my first ever papers! I was experimental and tried all kinds of paper from card to parchment, tissue paper (fell apart) and kitchen towels. Inkjet printed paper and laser printed paper. They dried so quickly in the oven! Thanks again. :)
