Word. Plus, it's the only time we've ever actually seen Maul emotionally vulnerable, and Sam Witwer absolutely SELLS it. Maul always sounds great, but Sam gives possibly his single best line delivery here - Maul drops the smooth, scary timbre, and his voice cracks pitifully as he pleads in absolute terror. He hardly even sounds like the same person. And then, after being shocked the first time, he starts screaming before the second shock even starts. Freaking phenomenal voice acting.

@@N38Productions With Savage around, Maul could do nothing but just kinda stay alive and not get killed. Savage Oppress was more of a hindrance to Maul in a way then an actual asset. It was only until after Savage was killed when Maul genuinely unlocked that fighting potential within him. You can even see in the 6 seconds of Maul and Sidious's lightsaber struggle that Sidious is seriously starting to have a hard time with Maul, hence why Sidious ended the fight when he did. Personally, I think Maul had every chance at holding his own against Sidious. Beating Sidious? Perhaps, perhaps not. But Maul could definitely hold his own on this one.

Dude, what a savage post... Totally apropos... Tbh, there's about 3 characters I believe the star wars brain trust screwed up--- Jar jar binks is a travesty of travesties... A singular blemish on all things star wars... this character, alone, should of catalyzed heads rolling at Lucasfilm... and probably precipitated its sale to Disney at a devalued rate... They turned what would've been a great idea in general grievous into a total clown show... The "cartoon network grievous" set the pace perfectly; only to have George Lucas's live action rendering fumble and drop the pass... What a callous waste of a character--- I also place finn in the same category as grievous; a Rogue stormtrooper gone good is not a bad idea but, like grievous, what starts out with promise morphs into something less than cringeworthy...

@@scroolewse3 Maul is not capable of taking him in a straight duel. Palpatine could have absolutely demolished the two brothers like a flyswatter if he wanted to. Savage was disposable. Maul still had a role to play in Palpatine’s plans. Maul had to be kept alive, even though Sidious wanted to savor and enjoy his fight with his ex-apprentice. He used the force when he saw that if he continued the fight he likely would have killed Maul (easily), which he didn’t want happening.

I love how dominant Sidious is the whole battle. The only time when any semblance of a balanced conflict goes on is right after Savage dies. At that moment Maul proves that he is truly the one with the greatest ability to use what the sith philosophy teaches. He is the one who truly follows the sith code, the passion and hate gives power thing. But ultimately Palpatine is simply too good. He is the culmination of a thousand year plot, and a thousand years of linear improvement of the dark lords of the sith, beginning with Bane.

The title of a Sith Lord is Darth, and Dooku and Vader were both crowned Darth, while General Grievous, being a non-force user, cannot be a sith lord. Maul was a sith lord as Palps gave him the title, Darth Maul.

The whole encounter could have ended at 1:50 when both Savage and Maul failed to resist a mere force push from Sidious but he decided to test both their prowess in lightsaber combat instead and initiated the duel. Then at 2:40 after being successfully charged at by Savage and finding it difficult to take on both brother who have resorted to attack him from multiple direction simultaneously, you can see him audibly scowl before once more opting to use his superior mastery of the force to momentarily disable Maul and dispatch an isolated Savage. Finally, at 4:13 the dual wielding enraged Maul clearly has gained a lead against Sidious in terms of strength finally managing to land a kick and have the advantage in the final saber cross, however at this point Sidious had decided to end the encounter and further tapped into the dark side to overpower Maul on the saber cross, and opted to use the force to disable him.

However, his connection to the force would always be his trump card in the fight, allowing him to decide where the engagement would take place (throne room, to announcement yard place, to in front of the mural) as well as how it would take place as well (his amount of opponents and their fighting styles). Although the Maul duo could at least concern him in terms of their physical capabilities, they were in no way able to even touch him in terms of their force capabilities.

One detail at the end not many people realize is the one thing Maul says once the fight is over. "Please have Mercy." You may be thinking, well of course because he doesn’t want to die to his master, but we see throughout that Maul will stay for a battle until one opponent is killed. Whether it be him or his rival. He has shown that he is willing to take a warrior's death (just like in rebels), and even with his Dathomirian origin it makes sense. So this scene shows exactly how scary Sidious is, even to Maul. The fact that Maul, despite being willing to have a warrior's death, he asks for mercy from Sidious. When even an evil, determined and beligerent foe like Maul asks for Mercy from Sidious, that is how you know what true terror is.

What's generally amazing about this duel is that sideous knows there's no way that Savage or Maul could even touch him, so he structures this duel purely so he can enjoy it the most 1. He starts off completely dominating the brothers with force powers to establish that no matter what they do, he can end the fight at any point just using the force. This demoralizes the both of them. 2. He goes overboard on the flourishes in his opening strikes to further strike fear into the brothers hearts, and cackles as he notes that the brothers are completely on the defensive. Both are terrified of him. 3. He spends the majority of the fight not really trying hard, as to give the brothers the impression that they might win, even allowing Savage to ram him. He's caught off guard as Maul almost lands a hit, and then snarls that he might have been going too easy on them. At that point, he just uses the force to knock maul out. 4. After the point he's just got savage dueling him, he's back to just having fun, literally dancing around Savage as he is multiple leagues above him in skill and speed. He delays killing Savage until maul wakes backs up, and makes a point to kill Savage in front of maul with a trick move and another over the top flourish. He gets the most glee from taking mauls only family away from him, and even lets maul be with his brother in the final moments just to let the pain hit home. 5. He lets Mauls rage boil over, and engages with him in a prolonged lightsaber duel, only to show maul that even with all his rage, he can't possibly match him, not in lightsaber combat, and certainly not in force powers. 7. It concludes with maul begging Sideous for mercy, and Sideous merely reminds maul that he doesn't believe in mercy even as a concept. It goes beyond him denying his former apprentice mercy, he would never show anyone mercy for any reason. Maul may be evil, but the story shows that it's a product of his broken past. Sideous is the complete embodiment of pure evil, as he does this just because he wants to.

I dont think people actually realise that maul could have ruled the galaxy if it weren't for this fight, not only was he a tremendous fighter, he was a brilliant strategist and politician which often gets forgotten. I think he learnt all this from his master, but ultimately he could have taken a lot more but, I don't even think we saw maul at his full power.

The whole story of Maul is about failure and wasted potential. He would have ruled the Galaxy and reformed the Shadow Collective in George Lucas Episodes: VII-VIII-IX. But as we see in Rebels and Clone Wars, Maul always got close to complete his goals, until he was defeated in the last minute. That is one of the reasons why his death in Rebels is so well made and tragic.

Obi-Wan didn’t know he was there because of that and Palpatine used a landing pad that was hardly guarded, and the majority of Maul’s forces and Obi-Wan were busy fighting so that made it easier to get into the palace undetected
