When I got a job at Google I didn’t tell my extended family for over a year. When I did, cold shoulders and underhanded remarks everywhere. When I got a job at Amazon, I still tried to minimize myself. Now...I teach people, primarily Christians, to LEVEL UP REGARDLESS of others and more. LOVE YOU MELISSA. 💯

"Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God... We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It's in everyone, it's not just in some of us, and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." -Marianne Williamson.

I think it's certain churches and how they teach the lessons of humility. Many of the churches that I have gone to teach prosperity, growth, education, being productive, making rank, etc. but to still be humble. Humility is a mindset and not being broke or stuck. Most churches especially if the pastor doesn't have a growth mindset cripples his congregation with his broke humility mindset. The church or the lesson of humility isn't the problem. This is why it's so important to know the Bible for yourself and not to rely on their understanding. Also, if a church doesn't jive with your spirit leave...

Thank you!

I’d really love to hear you guys talk about the effects of black children who are the product of “privilege” and the start of generational wealth. My parents worked hard for what they have and as a result my sister and I were able to have different experiences like living in a house most of our lives, having college paid for and getting cars as teenagers. We’re so blessed but I personally struggle with feeling guilty because not everyone was able to grow up like we did. A lot of people seem to talk about building generational wealth but at the same time get mad at the children who are the product of it. It’s a whole thing lol.
@antoinycemathis4 жыл бұрын
This would be a GREAT topic!!! As a people, we have to stop giving each other the side eye for what we deem as privilege. I've been thinking about this topic a lot, because my husband and I are working hard to guarantee a new level of success and financial wealth for our children, but I want them to have balance with it. It's a constant prayer for me to navigate it
@firstname83484 жыл бұрын
Is it the issue that you grew up priviledged or is it more that you assume that everybody grew up like this? I think sometimes people that grew up privileged come across as tone deaf because they assume everybody's life was the same or sometimes they try to make it seem like they worked for everything they had without acknowledging all the help they got.
@ItsErikaNaturally4 жыл бұрын
Same. I came from a two parent household and had to navigate the thoughts that my life didn't mirror my friends, that I should keep a lower profile to fit in.
@keishas.73244 жыл бұрын
First Name No, for me personally I knew that everyone didn’t grow up like we did. My parents grew up poor and remained humble even in their success as adults. They taught us to still work hard, save money, and do well in school. At the same time, I recognize that I’ve had help and I’m grateful my parents set us up in certain ways. I plan to do the same for my kids. My issue was with people who saw my life and would assume that we thought we were better than everyone else, which isn’t the case. I see where you’re coming from though, I’ve met people similar to what you’re describing. That just wasn’t my personal experience.

I appreciate this so much. I made the big leap and lived in L.A. to pursue music for four years. I moved back to Florida a couple of years ago. I’ve been growing and really paying attention to my ways. I have so many amazing ideas and will walk myself out of blessings with a quickness. When you realize you’re holding yourself back from greatness, that’s a hell of a pill to swallow. Especially when you’ve been practicing self sabotage for years. Recently I accepted a 2nd job for a company Ive worked at before. I was feeling down because I was thinking, “I am going backwards.” The only way for me to get out of this cycle is to be consistent and go all out for the life I truly desire. I know I’m not happy settling, so it’s time to refocus and approach life differently. Thanks for reminding us that we are not stuck in any situation. Love witnessing your journey!

I love the focus of reaching goals and tackling unworthiness. I believe that people have trouble with realizing that you deserve EVERYTHING you work for. I think a lot of the hang up with people is should I "Stunt" on people or not. Because most people do not have issues achieving goals most guilt comes in is should I show it off or just be happy with knowing for myself I am maximizing God's gifts in me. People can accomplish ALL the things and never post anything and other people prefer the validation of the SM post. I think it is a personal decision and neither way is wrong. But I see 2 different things. The actual doing of the things and the making public doing of the things. One doesn't have to be attached to the other.

It's so funny when Kev mentioned the outrage about #AskA it reminded me of a conversation I had recently with my aunt about how those of us who grew up in the church tend to be religious more than we seek and build relationship with Jesus. she even went to the extend to say it's as though we're selling Jesus and forcing him down people's throats which I highly doubt makes room for us to freely choose him like we're supposed to.

This was a right on time word and discussion. I just took the big leap in cutting people off who I didn't think I couldn't live without. But God said "I'm the only one you can't live without is Me. The people i bring in your life including your children are an extension of my love and existence and those who don't reflect my love will not be permitted to stay." This was definitely confirmation. But also I was just telling my friend if you don't believe you can have better you won't get better.. (i.e. a man...). When I tell you that I have been doing my self work for YEARSSSSSS and I still feel there are things that I am still working on, man... it is NOT easy!! And now that some things have happened in my life that I never imagined would happen I’m in a whirlwind all over again but pushing through.

Such an awesome episode. I have purposefully not watched the episodes about The Big Leap with Gay Hendricks or Self-Sabotage is Real. I realize I have been avoiding doing the inner work, but as of today. I have purchased the book. I am committing to myself to doing the work to address these issues in order to grow to live the life I dream about and imagine that I deserve and work for. Thanks to both of you for sharing your experience. You both are an inspiration in so many ways.

Sometimes, (in relation to Karen and Miles) you don't think you're ready. Your fears tell you that maybe in the future you will deserve the guy or the job or the car. But right now you are still putting in the work.

At 13:11 - Lisa was so right. It was inspiring to see Kev with the Maserati. For me, because i am trying to move to California and i stress about being able to get approved for an apt, paying my rent and going to school and just living. But seeing Kev get the Masi was like God saying, I can bless your effort just like how I blessed him

Outshining is so interesting!! I want to do bettwr than my parents (and be a blessing back to them)... and I want to set up a life where my children can and will do better than me. Especially in the black community, we have to fix that mindset (I know it's in other communities also, but it's like a plague in the black community)!!
