When Kevin was talking about people “existing” in marriages and people saying “they should’ve gotten divorced 25 years ago”, it made me realize - those couples should’ve been in therapy 25 years ago. But it wasn’t readily available. Thank God that therapy is easier to access now than it ever has been. Of course, getting your spouse to go is another thing. But at least it’s available for individuals, so they can at least work through their own issues and decide the best course of action to take. The generations before us didn’t generally have that option, so we are blessed to hopefully make better and healthier decisions.

My husband and I had a similar conversation a few months ago. For me, Articulation > Communication. My husband can be somewhat “wordy” and so sifting through the meaning sometimes is daunting. But when he takes a moment and really articulates what he means we have the most amazing conversations.

You are so right! A lot of our parents and grandparents stayed together bcuz it was socially unacceptable to divorce and the women couldn’t afford to leave. They didn’t do a lot of communicating, they did a lot of tolerating. Men had whole other families across town. I heard a therapist on Oprah years ago say “let’s stop celebrating time in the game”, let’s instead say “how’s that working for you”. The answer might surprise you.

Perhaps you all can dig into defense mechanisms which are often unconscious behaviors. Therapy helps decode these things. But often we don't understand how we can simply be unaware of certain actions. When I learned them I looked at my professor side-eyed, but then I came to realize that they are very real because our emotional development has been stunted by so many factors. We live in armor the majority of our days because many people even institutions are not out for our good. And we've even been conditioned to believe that true love is a fairy tale. So even a good thing can't be that good. It's a sad state to live in. What's also true is that while we are unaware, it still gets expressed. That too is often decoded in therapy. To me this was one of the best episodes. Really breaking down communication tactically. I suggest the word intention instead of transparency. To me transparency is a part of vulnerability. I appreciate the both of you for presenting this together. Melissa I especially appreciate your interest in this area and your ability to perceive these concepts. Kevin I appreciate you being an example of a man that's not resistant to growing in this area and combating the stereotype.
