thank you. one never stops learning. I'm definitely not a beginner, but I have always neglected the existence of subjunctive, a part form in "I wish I were" and in other fixed phrases such as "so be it", which I was led to think sounded somewhat strange because they were archaic. I'd never thought that there was an actual tense behind "so be it". I'm going to watch this video over and over again until I feel more comfortable with the subjunctive.

Thank you for this video! I am French and I have been learning English for more than 10 years now, and I have discovered the subjunctive just recently since it is quite rare or even a bit formal in the spoken language. It is very interesting to see that French and English are actually very close on many linguistic aspects, though they are two very different languages. As a matter of facts, the subjunctive in the French language is also less and less used even if it is much more important than it is in English. For instance, we would use a subjunctive in French to say "I want my friend to come with me". We would actually literally say "I want that my friend come with me".

Mr. Nicholls, this is another thorny subject to apply in day-by-day life. It is strenuous and it is the right way to convey a message, though. I live in the south of Brasil and in Brazilian Portugueses more and more the indicative mode prevails over the subjunctive mode as in Britain. A correct subjunctive sentence tells a lot and should not be disregarded, in my very humble opinion. I am way too far a ESL student to use "as if" and "as though" properly and "get away with murder". So, is it grammatically correct to say: a) He acts as if or as though he (be or were?) the most important person in the room; b) He acted as if or as though he had been (???) the most important person in the room. There are much more fixed expressions with the subjunctive mood, e.g: God bless you, God be praised, come (+ time/event), e.g. Come a crisis, we can deal with it.

I have a question. Regarding the example with ''wish''. Instead of saying ''I wish that situation end soon'', wouldn't be more appropriate to say ''I wish that situation would end soon''? Keeping in mind that we use wish to refer to hypothetical situations where the verb that follows is always subjunctive but past. If you can reply, I would really appreciate it.

Hello, Dave! I often come across these form of using the reporting verbs like "recommend" or "suggest": - It's recommended (or I recommend) FOR someone doing (or to do) something E.g - This book is highly recommended FOR children to read, or I recommend FOR you to read this book. The question is - are these sentenses correct as in is it possible to use a personal object with preposition (for or to) in this construction, or should we by all means make them over to strictly fit the subjunctive structure ?

Watch my reporting verbs lessons, and you will see that all the active forms you have given above are incorrect. The passive form is correct (it is recommended for children) but the rest are all wrong. Check reporting verbs in any good dictionary, and you will find all the acceptable forms quickly.

So far, I think it's not as difficult as people think/say, apart from not being as hard as the Spanish Subjunctive, for instance. It just requires much practice. Unfortunately, there are only very few videos about this subject on KZbin. I've just found your channel. This is actually a very good video. I don't really know what your goal is when it comes to give lessons on here. This video only gives an overview or look at what the subjunctive is. Was that your goal with it? Anyway, I think that, in case you have enough time, you should divide this subject into a series of videos. You said that you already did a video on 2nd and 3rd conditional, right? How about doing one on Hypotheticals and other ones on Reporting Verbs, Inversion, Adjetives and so on, talking about a couple of exceptions for this mood, as well. People that are struggling with this subject will surely find such videos helpful. Keep the good work up, and, again, thank you for your English lessons.

+aliza2220 Not necessarily. In some areas not using the subjunctive would be considered an error. I believe this is true of many parts of the United States. And a lot of people in the UK would consider 'If I was...' a mistake.

Advise + that. Without 'that' it sounds rather unnatural to me. I can't find any dictionaries which give examples without 'that'. So I wouldn't omit it from 'advise'.

Yes, I have heard loads of people say it. Including me! You know, the Americans are incredibly strict with subjunctive and if they don't write 'I insisted that he be in charge' it will be zero points for the student! The English often make fun of the Americans for how they speak and write, but actually their grammar is often far superior to our own!
