Agree on matchlock; useless in the field, but in defensive castle battles, they're beasts, easily racking up 4-500 kills.
@koreancowboy426 жыл бұрын
Their not that useless, combining the matchlock samurai who can reload faster when using their ability along with kneel down fire position. Having them up front of the yari wall just having them slightly close then let them shoot volleys before retreating them plus that you could also have some archers/bow warrior monks to shoot over the yari wall. Combining archers behind yari wall and guns in front can save you from having to take forever to route the enemy before they get to your lines with the archers. The back lines in reserve with katana samurai, naginata samurai, or warrior monks will do great for helping push or flanking. Along with cav support of yari cav or great guard. I tried tons of strategies and tactics that matchlock units can be good with. Though I agree matchlock units are better for siege defense, but on the field they can be used to good effect even more.
@brainwasher98764 жыл бұрын
@@koreancowboy42 They're usable--but I think they're just not competitive for cost and research time. Bow ashigaru are much more easily obtained and can skirmish better, more spears allow encirclements, and cavalry allow flanking. All of these are obtained much more easily than the burst damage/morale penalty of the matchlocks, who are briefly useful and then lose a lot of their utility the moment the enemy closes the gap. In siege defense though they're nuts, agreed.

@@koreancowboy42 There's another trick when in a defensive field battle against an opponent with lots of melee units. Deploy long yari in 5-10 rank squares in the front line (double-stacked yari if possible) with gaps between the units, and matchlocks in 2 or 3 ranks positioned behind the yari by about 50 feet. Enemy units will charge and get stuck on your long yari units, unable to squeeze through the gaps to your matchlocks. However your matchlocks can still fire through the gaps at the engaged enemy units, who will take heavy casualties + suffer a morale penalty.

No, it is not possible, unless you pay them enough money, which is very bad idea, try to get a peace treaty after all their armies are gone (not sure if they will even accept that, and to do it, I think you have to destroy the Imagawa first), or vassalize them. Because it's very deep in the tech tree that you'll get it in late game only. But by then, your army would already in the process of steamrolling Japan into submission, if not already conquered it. I myself got Matchlock by the time I already captured Kyoto and another 40 province to win long campaign. Even Import Matchlock need first contact event with Portuguese before you can build Nanban trade port to recruit them, which happened somewhere in 1560 - 1570, or almost 100 turns into the game that has maximum turn of 240. Exception is Otomo who has that Nanban Trade Port from the start. So the only plausible way to get Matchlock troops that can impact the campaign game in any meaningful way is to capture Otomo province and convert to Christian or play Otomo yourself. I'm contemplating trying Domination mode to see if I can get Matchlock to use in any meaningful way or not. But I heard that Short Campaign has research bonus to compensate for low turn count, don't know if the opposite is true for long game or not.
@koreancowboy426 жыл бұрын
@@machaiping though having matchlock units still causes lots of losses. I do a 8 yari units with 3 yari archer units and three yari or samurai matchlock along with lots of cav too. Combining the Yari wall with matchlock units kneeling fire position is op along with the three archer units in the back since they have farther range it's better to keep them back either way since the matchlock can just wait while the enemy's get shot at by the archers. Once they get into range the matchlock can release volley after volley with their ability to shoot more/reload faster I guess? If the enemy got too close you can push the yari wall forward and let the match lock units go to the flanks to support the cav if the enemy has cav or other troops trying to out flank you.
@machaiping6 жыл бұрын
@@koreancowboy42 The problem isn't their usefulness, the problem is that you can't get them until very late game. But by then you'd already finished the campaign. If you really want to play with matchlock, Otomo is the only one clan you can reasonably do that. With Oda or other Clan? It's doubtful due to reasons stated in above comment.
@koreancowboy426 жыл бұрын
@@machaiping which is why you play slow, as Oda clan, I took it slow and building up different forces in strategic points of provinces so that the reserve forces will be more stronger than my medium or low tier troops. Until I unlock the matchlock samurai troops, I can have them on the front lines of my borders defending. So it's best you play it slow.
@machaiping6 жыл бұрын
@@koreancowboy42 In my experience, you cannot take it slow in Long and Domination Hard mode, you either rush to grab as much land without triggering Realm Divide or risk falling behind economically, which translate to not enough armies to steamroll Japan before time limit. Not to mention research speed tied to number of castles you have, in other word, more towns = faster research speed = get matchlock faster. Unless you want to gamble on RNGesus dealing you the Portuguese contact event early, but those are much more expensive in upkeep than homebrew matchlock and no Samurai variant too.

Does anyone else here allow the Tokugawa army to come into Owari in the second turn of their Oda playthrough just so they can circumvent their army and take Mikawa so that their clan gets destroyed immediatly and their army won’t turn into a rebel army?
@brainwasher98766 жыл бұрын
Couple of tips: You can make Saito a vassal on turn 1 and trade immediately, without giving them money. This allows you to focus on the Tokugawa and Imagawa. You can choose to not fight the rebel army on turn 1. Instead, wait a turn, then the Tokugawa army will enter your lands. Defeat both, then defeat the remnants, and your daimyo should get the "Summer Son" trait, which gives +1 morale and an extra +1 morale/+1 happiness in all regions during the summer.
@brainwasher98764 жыл бұрын
The Oda yaris are beastly, yes, but only while their morale holds up. If they get flanked then they can literally start routing at 90% strength. Making sure that their flanks and rear are always covered, or investing in ashigaru commander, fixes this. This is ahistorical, but I find bow warrior monks or at least bow samurai to be crucial when used in conjunction with the spears. The only thing spear walls fear are enemy archers. You need superior archers to kill theirs, and then you can win any battle. A couple of cav regiments to guarantee your flanks are safe doesn't hurt either, and then just fill the rest of the army slots with yaris and long yaris.

I wiped out the Hatakeyama clan, after destroying Tsutsui, Imagawa, and Tokugawa. but another clan obstructed my path to the western Ikko Ikki territory. The eastern front was South Shinano and Sorth Shinano, I have five armies, one of which is at max capacity, but it watching the western front so that the clan obstructing me doesn't attack (their armies are quite large, and it's worrying me) I plan to take most of Ikko Ikki's territory, get to Echizen, and attack the clan that was obstructing me from the north and south. After I take full control of central japan, I will expand East, keeping 2 armies on the Western front, watching Chosokabe, and Shimazu. I will make the Date my ally, if I can, and I'll have them take control of the west for the realm divide, and I'll let Hattori expand west so that they can have some resources for their military, so that they can actually help me. after I control the east, I'll have two armies on the East, just in case Date decide to attack me when I take Kyoto (I don't know too much about Shogun 2, so I dunno if Date will actually attack) At this point I don't really have a navy at all, since I actually don't really focus on that, so I'll build up a strong navy and invade Chosokabe, just to get rid of that lingering annoyance. Then I'll focus one of my armies on Yari Cavalry, just so I can deal with Shimazu with ease (Their katana samurai is what I'm afraid of, my first campaign was Shimazu, and I made the mistake of letting one of my old allies, Chosokabe get too strong, it's now a back and fourth war between Shimazu and Chosokabe) But after I wipe out the western great clans, I have nothing else to fear, I have full control of Japan, if Date of Hattori break the alliance and attack, Hattori won't be much of an issue, (I'll have Metsuke ready, for their Shinobi) and I'll just send in a bunch of Spear Ashigaru and Yari Cavalry, and some bow Ashigaru of course.

Man I think it's best for an oda campaigner to get a hold of either Kaga(north of Owari) and/or Sagami(west of Owari) provinces for their irons and blacksmiths they hold. If one would take and own those provinces, they can put one province with armoursmith + armoury encampment, while the other with weaponsmith + armoury encampment. For gold go get Izu province. For rice money get the provinces with fertile soil and turn it to one of your cash producer.

I didn't have a chance to play campaign as Oda, but I did play a lot of battles as them. Usually matchlock Ashigaru were pretty useless - or at least I had very hard time to find good usage for them - I would build a ,,wall" of Yari Ashigaru, hide archers behind and have Katana Samurai at ready, and use small Calvary to provoke enemy to recklessly attack me. If I provoke Calvary, I'll just make them march into their death. If they're matchlocks, chances are I'll shoot them out before AI will even try to move them. If they're armed with Yari themselves, I'd just send Katana Samurai to deal with them. And if these are Samurai, I'd just send light Calvary. Only recently I started adding matchlocks for new strategy to break the advancing armies when they reached my rank - but it wasn't working as well as I expected it to. I know it all sounds silly, but I did win like 60% of my battles (on Easy difficulty, but still) - that's somewhat of a start, I guess...

The only way they might be hard are the first few turns. Surrounded by enemies, if the AI gets greedy and you lose those early engagements....

The Oda is difficult in that you'll get dragged into Wars constantly and if you don't consolidate the East you'll get over extended trying to fend off everyone everywhere.

Oda is my favorite clan! Idc it's the best!!!! Lolz especially since the starting area is in the middle so you can choose where to go plus that if you have control over the entire middle area. It's funny since in my campagin I beaten almost every clan's army everyone with yari ashigaru comp. Even during late game, I can't believe the strength of Oda clan since I nearly beaten the Oda campaign if it wasn't for my mistake on rushing to the Shogunate since I pressed the button to attack and do the auto battle which costed me some forgetfully plans such as playing the defensive for everytime I capture a province until I gain enough money to have several army regiments in reserve because the Hojo and Takeda were my biggest challenge in the east while the other clan's in the west were already battling each other, so I didn't have to deal with them all until I didn't notice my character was made Shogun. So glad I saved when I didn't take over Kyoto and was still building my vast naval and land troops. Again, Oda! My favorite clan!!!

I think what's supposed to make the Oda challenging is their place on the map. Owari may be close to some valuable provinces, but being in central Japan means they can be attacked from multiple fronts by multiple enemies, especially since that 'Impolite' trait on your starting Daimyo means most clans are already positioned to dislike you, thus more willing to declare war on you. You can counter this by building relations and eventually ally with a clan that's doing well on one side so you can better focus on the opposite side but, again, that bloody 'Impolite' trait makes building positive relations very difficult, why does it give -20 to diplomatic relations, that is insane in the early game! That being said, you can get around this fairly reliably. Getting your starting Daimyo... removed can help. Nobunaga's only a few years away from being of age to lead so it's not a huge loss. You can also help counter the penalty Impolite gives you by getting high honour for your Daimyo. A good way to farm honour points imo is to vassalize a neighbour next to an enemy, let them get conquered by said enemy, reconquer that province and vassalize again and before long your Daimyo is considered 'exemplary'. If nothing else, it will at least build exp for your leading general and keep non-related generals loyal.

The "problem" I have with Oda is that with those borders you will be constantly at war with your nieghbours, and you keep building armies after armies of just yari and bow ashigaru and advancing with your unstoppable armies, that the war front shifts so fast that you can't really justify building up a "military city". I just finished an Oda campaign (its only on hard) and I did not build a single unit of long yari ashigaru because i just can't justify spending nearly 10000 gold on upgrading to yari drill yard and armour encampment and max armoury for about 10 turns wait time when I walk from settlement to settlement in a turn and already able to take out Katana samurai with my experienced ashigaru. I only built like 5 cav units in total because there is just way too much gold I need to spend. I mean, its definitely a strong and fun clan to play as, but at the same time I also like to build up extremely strong combos of armies. And although it is very easy for Oda to do that, it still doesn't feel its worth it at all. Like why bother with long yari when your normal yari already kills literally everything lol

I've found a little finesse is required to defeat the Rebels in the first few turns. First time playing Oda I immediately attacked the Rebels with my army and was defeated handily (bad idea attacking an army deployed on a hill!). If I order my army into my fort, the Rebels sack my port & village. And my fort is vulnerable to assault if I march my army too far away (even if my army remains in Owari province). The key seems to be moving my army to a point between the Rebels and my village on the first turn - this lures the Rebels from their hilltop position to attack my undefended fort, hoping for a quick win. Except my army is still within support distance & can then win a decisive field battle with light casualties on autoresolve.

Definitely, and it's not a bad choice to switch over to them at all. What I meant by wanting to use Ashigaru throughout your entire campaign was just a general bit of advice, they can field higher tier armies as well as any other clan, but because of super low upkeep, you can easily just stick to Ashigaru armies which can be recruited incredibly quickly in the late game, and have such low upkeep that you can essentially recruit them indefinitely without ever running out of money (in the late game) meaning you can just keep a train of units going to the front line so that you'll never have to worry about being overrun. That sentence was way too long...

Idk if they changed anything but my Oda campaign has been difficult because I get war decced by like 3 major clans in the first 5 turns and i have to maintain two full stacks just to keep them at bay and only push south if i can get a peace deal. Im trying not to expand north even with the war decs because it will be too difficult to defend. Then by the time you get to Hojo they are enormous and allied with the enormous Takeda
@chadnorris82573 жыл бұрын
I imagine it would be considered hard because later in the game the devs expect you to stop using ashigaru units. As opposed to spamming so many armies of them that all those elite samurai units get overwhelmed by the neverending zerg rush of peasants.

Historically the Oda also used gunpowder to great effect. I feel they should also have some Otomo like capabilities with upgraded matchlock units.
@andrew23532 жыл бұрын
They do, Oda's Matchlock Ashigaru are slightly superior to the Otomo's, having better melee stats and lower upkeep, however the Otomo's Matchlock Ashigaru can be recruited much earlier, before they have the gunpowder mastery art.

@machaiping6 жыл бұрын
But that army is so easy to beat. On Hard difficulty it's only Daimyo and 1 ashigaru archer. Which a single Samurai Retainer you got in the fort will rekt them, the trick is to use your castle to shield your Retainer from arrows, AI - seeing no enemy to shoot at - will stupidly climb the wall instead of walking around the fort to find angle to shoot while Daimyo will never dismount until it's the only unit left. This will result in your Retainer rekt the ashigaru archer, and then rekt the Daimyo bodyguard when they climbed up after you routed the ashigaru. If you want to be double sure, stick your general in the fort too for free level up.

Try the ODA on legendary and we'll see if they're easy! It is very hard at start due to the probable war between immagawa,tsutsui b(becuase honeslty the kitabatake don't survive more than to turn 5) not to mention the hattory and/or the ikko ikki
@pypy19868207 жыл бұрын
It's probably for historical accuracy. Nobunaga inherited Oda clan at its lowest point where the clan is divided, was threatened by much stronger neighbors, and was on the verge of total annihilation from Imagawa clan and their then vassal clan Tokugawa (then known as Matsudaira).
@brainwasher98764 жыл бұрын
Oda Legendary's really a tossup. I got creamed once and then second time through it was a cakewalk. The problem with clans that start the campaign in the middle of the campaign is that how it turns out is completely a crapshoot thanks to diplomacy. In my first run the Hojo and Takeda allied and sent 5 simultaneous doomstacks into Suruga and Owari, while the Ikko Ikki had no one take care of them and sent 3 doomstacks down from the north. In my second, the Hojo and Imagawa wiped each other out and the Ikko was mobbed by its neighbors, leaving me with no one serious to fight.

for the oda while that is good and all just wait till they come under artillery fire and then that will become a lieablity cause they have to close in fast etc. force them to attack and they crumble easally. though there is a mod out there that allows more provinces and minor clans to be put in allowing all of the clans especially the oda and the tokugawa since they are both major clans and the latter unifies japan sucessfuly etc they will have the room to exapand.
