So this is another mini-rant. Because soapers say weird things on the inter webs, and whenever that happens we like to play with the things that are said, break some rules, and tell you why something can or can not work. Because chemistry is fun.
In this case, we are playing with hybrid shampoos, so a combination of a syndet bar (IE SCI noodles) and a cold process shampoo bar. Can it be done? Of course, regardless of what someone may have told you. Should it be done? I dunno.
We're giving away samples of these guys with orders this week - comment in your order notes on soapandclay.com if you're interested in trying these hybrid shampoo bars out!

Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

The soapy fights continue on the forums, and I have opinions. So yeah - we are making a syndet+cold process shampoo bar today. Because it can be done. But should it be?

Don’t you just love it when you seen or experienced something in life and someone comes along and says that never happened. I get irrationally angry when that happens. I know I must be the bigger girl but damn. Thank you. I will try this.

So interesting!! I make a rosemary CP shampoo bar that makes excellent bubbles, my only problem is that waxy after feeling during rinsing, so Im thinking if I add the SLI it will be the solution, I will certainly try it. Love your videos.

I was just watching something that stated that powder is much better over using noodles. It makes a more solid bar without crumbling.

An issue? Why? You can add so much to soap... ages ago I experimented to see if it was beneficial to add sci noodles to cp shampo bar and one of my friends loved it so I make a loaf for her whenever she is out of shampoo... why would ppl think you could not?

That was basically the conversation I had! It was the strangest thread ever, and I didn’t want anyone walking away thinking it couldn’t be done, so we did it. 😂

It was probably a thread I started. I know I started fights asking questions people don't like. The reason I want to is due to having hard water. I was a cosmetologist so I understand about how hair reacts to stuff. But everyone's hair is different some hair does great with higher ph. But my thing is I wanted more bubbles that will work with hard water. And too much free fatties causes build up when using hard water. Those were my reasons to want to try it.

I too have wondered and I will be trying. My soap shampoo bar don't have large bubbles but lots of small creammy ones. Will be trying to see if I can add lather without loosing conditioning in mine. Thanks for the vid

I'm with you on the squabbling, why argue at all? I don't make soap but I believe soaping is a form art, and art while it has its theory and all. Art is subjective and is only limited by the imagination. With the people who says something can't be done, are limiting them selves. Either way I love the think outside of the box and showing us that it is ok to have questions. Hope that all made sense 😄

Yeah I’m so over arguing about everything; my heart is tired. And to the soap stuff, there’s artistry and there’s science - if the science lines up, then it can be done. 😂

Right! And you have the science to back it up!😄Question everything,and you can then reason the arguments away!

Won't one reason for doing the hybrid be to allow makers to use fresh botanical additives that apparently can not be added to syndet.

Love your videos and your quarky ways of explaining “all the things” 😊 it’s my understanding that A pH of 9 or anything over 6 would be very damaging to hair. Can the pH be lowered with citric acid, as in syndet bars or would that negatively effect the soap?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 2 жыл бұрын
So I go into more detail about ph and hair in the other shampoo videos - think I’ve done five at this point. But to answer the citric acid question - it can take the ph down SLIGHTLY. Not enough to really make a difference, and if you lower the pH of cold process too much, the recipe will fall out of solution and essentially won’t saponify.

I’m older than dirt and I have vivid recollections of my mother washing my very long thick shiny curly hair with a bar of sunlight soap. We lived in a rural area, and I may have been 7or8 before I ever saw dedicated shampoo. Don’t recall seeing anyone with terrible hair. Great video

My point, which I neglected to make, was you use whatever works for you. I’ve been a maker for 30 years so I’ve tried almost everything. I came across your channel when looking for something else. Love it 💜

Henna sooq does a cp shampoo bar with soap nut in a similar manner. So instead of sci she adds soap nut.

your hair looks really pretty what products are you using?
@guildsofrequiem

Yes you can do it. Why? depends on what you want for a final product. Commercial Marketing has the public CONVINCED that is it doesn't "bubble/lather" then it's not "cleaning." We add SCI to the oils, upon request only, as the ingredient itself doesn't meet our "natural" criteria.

That’s a very valid and interesting point re: cleansing and lather!

Dishwasher detergent does not bubble or it would be all over the kitchen :) but it does clean, I do not think there is a connection unless the bubbles make it easier to spread.

Thank you for this video. I'm curious, what would happen if you did melt the SCI before adding it to the soap batter?

Hey! I don’t actually know what would happen; I’ve never done it! It would be fun to try!
@guildsofrequiem
@guildsofrequiem 3 жыл бұрын
It is incorporated "better" in the final product as you wont see the "bars". The final result is a cleaner looking product that will still produce extra bubbly lather.

Question, instead of anionic surfactant (sci noodle) does it work with amphoteric surfactant like cocabetaine, i mean in theory it would mellow down the alkali in cp shampoo bar
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I don’t see any reason why cocobetaine wouldn’t work in cold process, though I’ve personally never tried it. I would add it at 1-3% to the traced oils, much like an extract or sodium lactate. I’m actually making shave bars today - will experiment with one of the batches and see if there’s a difference!

We will use cocogluicoide in ours to give a nice gentler bubbly lather in CP Solid soaps.

Will the pH decrease in a cold process soap the longer it cures?
@gwenbrown8513

I have been doing cold process shampoo bars and I love mine but I keep getting comments from other soapers that CP shampoo bars aren't good for your hair. If I use the wrong oil blends, my hair gets a little dry but with the right oils I love the outcome. Is there a legit beef about the pH of CP causing damage? Thanks!!
