I love that the Barbenheimer meme is basically the exact inverse of what happened with Morbius. And the fact that the whole internet rallied around something like this not just because they thought it was funny, but because people were sincerely excited for both movies and expected them to be great, is just so unusually wholesome and it makes me smile.

@bmcgee95 Barbie managed to score the box office of Super Mario while having the critical acclaim of Oppenheimer. Let's be honest about the consensus here - just because you didn't enjoy Barbie doesn't mean your opinion reflects the movie going population at large, that's what box office, reviews and audience scores are for.

The bit about them running out of pink is actually true. It's so strange how well it seems these two movies compliment each other, at least in terms of battling ideologies. Cynicism and nihilism vs. Optimism. Oppenheimer wasn’t meant to be a deep discussion of politics. It’s a biopic. Politics is within the film, but that’s not the message. Barbie is a political movie. It’s message is political. That’s probably why you felt the way you did. I have to say I didn’t feel anything after barbie. It was a fun silly movie, it’s political nonsense had some validity but it mainly shows how Greta misunderstands the society we live in.
@EzaleaGraves
@EzaleaGraves 10 ай бұрын
I feel like they could both have the same emotional impact on someone's worldview, but it's much more likely that one will be a Stereotypical Barbie going through the world and finding more complexity than they expect than it is that they'll be a lead scientist/general/president who's able to influence this much of the world. I definitely think it's morally good to not bomb cities, but in my life I'm way more likely to deal with the social moralities that Barbie presents. Barbie didn't fully appreciate Ken, and Ken didn't have an identity outside of who he was to Barbie, and that's going to come up in my life a lot more. As other comments here have also said, Barbie is meant to make you think about your life while Oppenheimer is meant to make you think about the past, so they aren't exactly going for the same type of depth.

@@QuestionableLifeChoices I know but from an objective filmmaking standpoint point, Oppenheimer doesn’t have a scene where the main characters spend 5+ minutes verbally explaining what the movie is about and all the themes. In spite of it being longer with much more dialogue, I think Oppenheimer, relative to what it sets out to accomplish, is much more effective than Barbie. Now it might just be a personal pet peeve of mine but I really don’t like when movies grind to a halt to verbally spoon feed the audience exactly what they’re supposed to glean from it. Barbie was already doing a good job with its subtext and that monologue just took the movie from a 9 to a 7 for me.

Oppenheimer clearly didn't make it clear enough what was at stake with the Q clearance. Losing it ended his career as a research physicist. In the 50s and 60s, to teach even at any prestigious university required the clearance. To get access to any nuclear research required the clearance. Losing the security clearance cost him his house, income, and career. That's not exactly "small stakes". But also a flaw of the movie imo.

America’s monologue at the end was very on the nose, and was something every single woman has said or re-tweeted at some point in their life, but I actually appreciated how direct this movie was. It wasn’t a commercialized version, it wasn’t metaphorical, it was directly about feminism and what it means to be a woman today, and I LOVED it!!

Im so glad that we’re getting movies that have a creator with a unique style and vision. I watched oppenheimer at a 10pm viewing so I got quite tired and didn’t enjoy it too much. It was much better at a 5pm viewing. And other films this year have had a similar feel of creative freedom. Mission Impossible, Barbie, ITSV, Guardians 3. The future is letting talented directors spread their wings

You should google Loyda Martinez, she is the woman who fought for the Hispanic people who were forced off their land in Los Alamos, New Mexico for very little money, and then hired to work with dangerous materials and not provided proper safety equipment (while the white people were).

Could've just been my theatre (but I've heard this from a few other reviewers as well), but I still couldn't hear large chunks of the dialogue. Didn't ruin anything for me, but I'd love to rewatch it with subtitles so I can actually follow some of the discussions in the movie.

Subtitles should become a standard. Well hearing people (at least neurotypical ones) should be able to adapt quickly, and not well hearing poeple would be included. Plus, having subtitles actually helps people learn to read in a language.

Barbie was my favorite movie this year, and may be my favorite of all time!! Going into it I knew I would love it (Little Women was my favorite as a kid, and when Greta knocked that out of the park I knew I could trust her forever), but I didn’t expect to to feel so personal!! I don’t know if every woman feels this way, obviously America’s monologue is pretty universal, but I felt more seen by Margot’s Barbie when she breaks down and says something like “I can’t fix this, I’m not one of the smart Barbies, I’m just stereotypical Barbie, not good enough for anything.” Yall when I tell you I SOBBED I am not exaggerating!! As women we have huge societal level issues that need to be addressed and sometimes we can feel so incredibly inadequate in facing them, that we feel defeated even before we begin. And like America’s character, I too am sick and tired of every single woman I know feeling like she isn’t enough for this world. This movie hit me in such a personal spot, I honestly felt uncomfortable at times, like they were reading my journal aloud to the theater! Lol I honestly can’t wait to go again, and I’ll be prepared and bring tissues this time!!

Haven't seen Oppenheimer, but Barbie was fantastic, definitely in my top 3 of the year. The Barbie song and Ken plot is honestly ridiculous realistic for how incels pride can fk up the society, but it does a good job at showing how both genders ego and pride can ruin an society, and how both Kens and Barbies gotta learn to work together to live in harmony

I liked the movie for the exact opposite reason. I sympathized way more with Ken and saw Barbie as representing a toxic form of femininity. And the Kens never did anything wrong while in charge, and even gave Barbies the chance to change the regime by voting, The things that Barbies never gave to the Kens

Barbie was great. Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. But Oppenheimer is on a whole another level for me. I did a double feature. My understanding was that Japan actually *barely* surrendered even after the bombs and the soviet union declaring war. There was a coup against the emperor to stop the broadcast of his surrender speech that nearly succeeded. Not that I condone the bombing in any way, but the alternatives were staggeringly horrific across the board. Blockade or invasion would have killed millions. That's been my understanding of it anyway.
