As a long time fan of Titanic, both the movie and the ship, i feel I must add at least something to the conversation. As such, here is my favorite piece of trivia from the production: During the filming, Cameron refused to let his actors out of the freezing water for hours until he got a specific moment or shot on camera. Because of this, several of the actors wound up with a build up of ice on their skin, and in some more extreme cases, led to the skin beginning to suffocate and turn blue. To counteract this, specialized teams were brought in to harvest the ice from the skin, and coax the skin back to life, leading to the film being given the working title of “Blue Harvest”.

One fun fact I learned in chemistry is that the titanic was supposed to be unsinkable because they gave the ship numerous compartments in the hull, so that should the hull be punctured, only one of the compartments would get filled with water and the ship as a whole would stay afloat. In actuality, when the hull was punctured, the low temperature of the water caused the compartment to collapse in on itself, which breached the adjacent compartment(s), and then that kept happening until the ship did actually sink.

There is one thing you missed discussing which was brilliant... The drunk guy on the ship next to Rose and Jack as it goes down, and how he's based on an actual survivor of the titanic.
@Anynom2 жыл бұрын
The original ending had Brock finding Rose with the diamond and speaking for everyone with "you had it the whole time?!" And Rose's nice defense of "hardest part of being poor is knowing you're rich. But every time I thought of selling it, I remember I got by without Cal's help."

I remember going to see the Wedding Singer on the day it opened in February of 98, and there was a separate line to get into the movie theater (the building itself) to see Titanic. It was absolutely fucking bananas that a movie was not only still #1 after nine weeks, but was a literal blockbuster during the worst time of the year for box office success.
@nellgwenn Жыл бұрын
Well The Exorcist has it beat. That movie stayed in theaters sometimes for a whole year. The film was released on December 26th, 1973. People would stand in line outside for hours to see it in the cold.

I still find the fictional love story rather shmaltzy, but the ship's sinking is still one of the most compelling and horrifying sequences put to film. You can't help but feel the panic and doom of those passengers stuck on the ship as it went down..
@tobylerone42852 жыл бұрын
This is why having the DVD is great because it comes in two parts and the second part is just the iceberg bit onwards, which is coincidentally when it ceases to be a love story and becomes a horror story

One of the deleted scenes was showing survivors when the sun began to rise a few hours later. In it we get to see 2nd Officer Lightoller commanding a small group of men in a vicarious balancing act on top of the overturned lifeboat (which really happened) and the baker clinging to a chair and still somehow alive in the water (which is also true, he was the last survivor pulled from the water). Without that scene people just assumed those people died, especially with Rose giving the Baker a goodby look as the ship goes down.
@jackiekreutzer166 Жыл бұрын
I really wish they had kept that short clip of Lightoller on the collapsible. He's my favorite officer and the movie doesn't really show what happens to him, other than him clinging to the boat when the funnel falls.

On the bit about Cameron giving back his salary, but getting a percentage from gross. Saw an interview where he said he not only gave back his salary, but also his percentage from any profits, so he supposedly didn't make any money from Titanic. This is because the film went so massively over the promised budget (from $120m to $200m).

Great video, very infomational and interesting. A fun little Titanic fact: The chief baker, Charles Joughin, survived due to drinking a lot of whiskey, making him numb to the cold. He was the last person to leave the ship, and can be seen in the movie swigging some booze from a flask when the ship stands up.

@@hoosthere Our bodies are weird when they get cold, shivering etc helps us to a certain point, but once you get cold enough the various mechanisms your bodies do to help cope with the cold actually start making it worse and its a death spiral. In this case, it seems, the alcohol short circuits that so his body didnt react properly. As a result if he were in a cold situation he'd end up worse, but in a freezing situation he avoids the negative feedback loop and can survive longer by doing nothing.

Fun Fact: JP Morgan who finance the Titanic and a handful of other extremely wealthy businessmen left the ship just minutes before the ship left last minute. It was very odd for JP Morgan to miss the maiden voyage of his own ship. Guess he is just a very lucky guy right…right?

Until watching this video, I never noticed that Cal (Billy Zane) is in the afterlife scene in the background just to scowl at Rose reuniting with Jack. I thought that was a funny choice, like he’s there waiting there for her in the afterlife too just to be pissed off still.

What struck me on my recent rewatch is how subversive the 2nd half is too me - this was made in the era of independence day; disaster movies that tended to revell in the carnage. And then J.C comes alongs and makes it a harrowing bleak look at what this type of event was like. Like it’s because its a real historical event bit this approach was never really adopted by others until after 9/11.
@andrewmcmillan2292 жыл бұрын
Independence Day was made by Roland Emerich who still revels in the carnage. Titanic was made the same year as Dante’s Peak which was also harrowing in its disaster footage.
