I agree with people that are saying the VFX in marvel movies isn't that good anymore. I have to say though, it's no fault of the VFX artists. I have three mates that worked on this film and many other Marvel projects in the past, and unfortunately, the VFX industry is one that is sorely mistreated by the Hollywood system. It also sucks that when a VFX house bids on a project/shot package, Disney for example, will always seek out a studio that will be more cost effective. VFX houses will then try outbid each other to see who can do the work for the lowest amount possible, even if it means a studio will end up taking a loss on a project, with zero profit, just so they can build their portfolio. What sucks even more is that Disney and other studios encourage this behaviour which only hurts the studios and its artists. The worst part is the hours these artists are essentially forced to work just to meet Disney's deadlines. My mates have worked 70 hour work weeks on average, barely see people or get sleep. It's crap. Not to mention, when a studio accepts a VFX house's bid for a project, that budget is locked. And Disney is known for making multiple revisions to their projects which the budget given simply can't justify, but gets done anyway. That's why you get not so great looking VFX. Studios like Disney burn out artists and don't pay them enough for their work. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

So, Comrade, what are we going to do about the bourgeoisie and their mouse master? Perhaps the animators should own the animation studio and benefit from the full value of their labor. If all animation houses were owned by artists I doubt many would accept the premise of working for nothing just for "artist rep." It shouldn't work when low level content creators try to get free art in exchange for "exposure," so sure as hell shouldn't work when the largest media company comes knocking. We must hold these companies to account.

@@adamburke4738 But that's what an anecdote is. If you don't believe ANY anecdotes then why even listen to anyone? My brother works for a VFX house in Australia that Disney uses for all sorts of their projects, not just Marvel, and the industry is incredibly shady. There are no unions, there are no safeguards to stop these houses from working people overtime/weekends with no pay. And the houses themselves aren't the issue, they are almost always run by passionate people who want the best for their workers, but they work under this global umbrella that NEEDS to be run as tight as possible. VFX needs to be done in Australia so it can get to Canada so they can get their scenes to London and then to California because Disney wants them by yesterday. And all of this needs to be directed and consitent and fit together. And the end result, in terms of a working industry and landscape of young, recently graduated and vulnerable VFX artists, is a shitshow.

What I thought while watching this was similar but in the other way. It seemed like Thor and Jane were just immensely powerful and it seemed a tad propped up by the plot, but then to have someone else extremely powerful and dangerous show up seemed to balance it. Others are entitled to call it lazy or unjustified, or in some way poor writing, but I honestly found it entertaining that they raised the stakes for both parties. Plus riding the tails of Endgame and The Batman I found there was real risk that isn’t normally present in “good guy fights bad guy and then good guy finds a way to win” movies, because even though they show Thor Working out and becoming the most powerful he’s ever been, he could still die. The villain was seriously capable of killing him as well, and it could have definitely been a path the writers went down.

I feel that the problem with the movie is that there's no sense of urgency or real danger throughout the whole film; when the Asgardian kids were kidnapped it rapidly turned into a joke; we never see "the god butcher" actually killing (except for the opening scene) nor even fighting gods. Heimdall isn't a joke. Love and Thunder, EVERYONE other than Gorr are jokes. Everyone gets to be funny. Then the movie tries to have Gorr be a big threat to all Gods but we never really see that since Thor and Co are such goofballs. Fun ride but Gorr isn't supposed to be a funny character. I think the issue Mason is trying to get at is that no one in the movie reacts to the idea that maybe Gorr is actually right. We see all these horrible Gods in the movie and none of the characters react in any meaningful way. This movie really needed a scene where either Thor or Jane questioned this dilemma and whether or not they needed to stop Gorr. Because based on what we see, the only reason the heroes have a cause to go after him is because he kidnapped the kids. If that plot element is removed from the movie what actual motivation do our heroes have to go on this journey? This movie was really missing a scene like that to give it an actual backbone.

13:11 I think the problem is: Marvel gave this job to Taika because Ragnarök was so popular. This combined with the other major issue: the decision to adapt Gorr The God Butcher AND Mighty Thor into a two hour piece. Those stories deserve some breathing room, yes, but they also demand a more serious tone. Taika has proven he isn’t the best at filming a serious, joke-less scene when it is warranted. With that being said, I do enjoy some of the things he and Jennifer Kayton Robinson were able to do within that framework. Gorr is still menacing and cool and somewhat interesting, despite deserving more severity and screen time; the last two pre-credits scenes are really touching; and a lot of the jokes did land for me. I consciously went in with an optimistic mindset, which helped me enjoy it more than Maso. I’d forgotten about the Marvel Formula. I will also admit the stakes feel way too low. Gorr literally plans on fulfilling his quest using a wishing well, which is quite abstract for a plot coupon. And Gorr doesn’t feel as threatening as he could’ve since we only see him Butcher one God.
@turtlesmoothie40072 жыл бұрын
whats almost more infuriating is that taika can actually do some heartfelt scenes when it needs that kind of energy, specifically the elevator scene and odins death from ragnarok. feels like he looked at this movie, saw it needed to be actually serious and decided he'd fully commit to the lame "every 4 seconds a bad joke" formula

It feels so much smaller than Ragnarok. But it should not considering the stakes.. but you didnt feel it. They should have focued more on the Jane story or Gorrs story. I dont think they had time for both. i loved the ending of the movie to be fair but i think overall, taika has made Thor as a character the best hes been on the big screen. but there gets to a point where you cant lean into the comedy so much. taika needs to make us feel the stakes. thats what he missing in these movies. Thor loses everything, but all that build up feels lost when its all made a joke out of.

Despite loving Ragnarok, that was a huge problem there. He loses his father, his home, and learns of a sister in that and you literay feel 0 of it DURING that movie. Endgame/infinity war gave thor his actual emotional ethos. Ragnarok is legit just joke to joke, bad fight scene, jokey end. I love it- but as like character development for thor (and i mean REAL development of character not things happening to him with no reaction) ragnarok is actually terrible. I think part of the issue with this new film is that the silliness overshadowed the other critical parts of Thor’s character that fans have come to love since Ragnarok. In Ragnarok there was jokes, fun, and improv. Chris Hemsworth really shined at the new “comedic” moments not seen in the first two Thor films and brought an enjoyable new life to the character. But on the other hand, Odin’s death had weight. Loki’s scenes had weight. Asgard’s destruction had weight. This seriousness carried over into Infinity War where Thor had nothing left and was at his lowest, on a warpath which resulted in failure when Thanos snapped. Then in Endgame he had to deal with that failure, and while elements of his character remained comedic, the “fractures” from Ragnarok and Infinity War basically had now broken him in a serious way that made fan’s hearts sink. He had to come back from that. He had to crawl himself from that pit. Thor Love and Thunder focused almost entirely on silliness, and left behind the “weighted” part of Thor’s arc from Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame. The “BRING ME THANOS!” part of him was left behind almost entirely in favor of the “gag / comedy” part of Thor. I expected more serious and emotional tones when he spoke with Jane about how he’s afraid to love again. I expected more serious tones when he had to tell the Asgardian children not to fear. There could have been jokes here and there - but throughout the film it’s gag after gag after gag - and we only get to see the “funny / meme” part of Thor, which is why fans might be upset. I wanted to see this film give Thor the love and hope he has been missing in a weighted and emotional way as he deserves. Instead I saw every moment of plot seem to be punctuated by a punchline which really made me feel like the Thor from Infinity War is being disrespected.

Yes. You have a point. But let me add to it… You’re right that you want to root for the protagonist. But you don’t necessarily need to root against the villain. And Christian Pale(ha, cuz of his skin) definitely wasn’t doing “good” work. And Thor&company defiantly weren’t “dousches” or bad. But even if you say that Gorr was right, and that Thor& company are unlikable… do people not like compelling movies like Nightcrawler? That guy SUCKS. But it’s still a good movie. To me it’s not abo it boring old : good vs evil. People have nuances and motivations. Every villain is the hero in his own story. But I digress : Gorr was still an antagonist. One who kidnapped children. One who leveled a town and killed a bunch of Ohioans&Azgaurdians. The dude clearly went over the line. He’s the bad guy who hates a corrupt government official, so he goes in and holds the entire building at gun point or with a bomb. The best drama/tension is when both people have a point. But you are correct : you do want to root for the hero. And Thor and Jane were selfless. And trying to save kids. Hell, the antagonists goal would have killed thor, Jane, a bunch of other presumed innocents. We have Konchu, the Blck panther god, Thor. Jane, Odin, etc etc. there ARE good gods out there. Despite Me. Bale’s crappy dealt hand. But on the flip side, we can assume that along with the innocent gods, come some jerk gods too. However, that doesn’t mean you just get to kill them all. That’s Thanos level thinking. Not to mention that all the dirtbag gods that we saw on screen actually did get their come up’ings; The Sun god got stabbed to death. And Zeus got pierced through his heart with his own damn lightning bolt (however, he came back like a cockroach). Let me know what you think. I find this a fascinating subject.

Well to be fair on Thor’s part, all of the god butchering that gorr did caused massive problems for people across the galaxy, as seen in the opening with the guardians where they were being overwhelmed with distress signals about their gods dying and the problems that came with it( like the opening fight scene where those biker aliens attacked because the people were without a god and defenseless) so even if some gods that we saw were dicks many still held importance in some way or another to their people, either as sources of faith or as protection/divinity. They had managed to fit losing the battle, losing stormbreaker, and Jane revealing that her powers are killing her and only having one power up left, into what didn’t seem to be enough time to adequately cover nearly any of it to emotionally impact the audience. Overall though I did like the silliness of the film, but I don’t think that the serious parts were delivered in a way that cut through the silliness effectively like we’ve seen Taika do before in say Jo Jo Rabbit, where I was alternating between chuckling and sobbing hysterically. But I am leaving room for filming restrictions and reshoots because of Taika’s discography.

Phase one actually felt like it was happening for real and happening now. Thor and Guardians kind of killed that. Now with all the planets out there that seem to be so much better than Earth, we halfway expect lobbies from Earth saying "hey, that Kree homeworld kind of looks better than here". Humans now are completely incidental to everything, so its kind of hard to care. If you think about it, in The Dark Knight, the 'heroes' of the film were the collections of people on two boats who refused to blow one another up, despite haveing good reason to. This provides the WHOLE motivation for Batman, which makes him a more interesting character than he otherwise would be. Now they are more or less kids movies, in this case almost literally. We are supposed to ONLY be interested in the life and times of heroes, not any of the people they are supposedly helping.

"Decent, but not as good as Ragnarok..." should be the movie poster tagline for this one. It's entertaining enough, and hits enough beats to be worthy (a-hahah) of your time for a trip to the cinema, but it never quite seems to click like the previous film did. The cast are all great. Portman's clearly having a lot of fun being Mighty Thor, but Bale's the absolute highlight despite his wonderfully creepy Gorr being massively underused (he barely feels like he's in it at all at times). A 3 minute montage of Gorr killing more Gods (deleted scenes), 1 min of Jane getting powers (BTS show they shot it) 2 more mins exploring the other gods, and 4 minutes fleshing out and reworking the ending (I didn't like the kids part). For me Love and Thunder felt more like an SNL skit of a Thor movie for most of it but the jokes don’t land well and runnings gags outstay their welcome. It’s almost cringe. Too many jokes and not enough time to sit in serious dramatic moments that wouldve meant more if it had more room to breathe. Plot and story felt very rushed and we got to things with characters that don’t feel earned in the midst of a million jokes a minute. The emotional beats dont make you feel the way it should. Christian Bale deserved better for sure. He was amazing as Gorr and needed more screentime to show more of his story, character and him actually butchering Gods but it kind of felt out of place in this more comedic movie. Its like if Heath Ledger as Joker in terms of performance and story was thrown into a SNL sketch. Gorr shouldn’t have been the villain for this tone of a movie which sucks to say because Christian Bale was amazing. There were no stakes really. Watched Ragnarok right before Love and Thunder and Ragnarok had a way better balance between jokes, drama, tone, dialogue, story, and character development. And the jokes in Ragnarok landed way better than in Love and Thunder. The theatre i went to only had a big laugh the first time the goats came in and screamed but that was really it. I really didnt like Thors character or his arc much in Love and Thunder. Thor has gone through the most tragedy and loss, yet his character in Love and Thunder is like when he went to SNL to do skits of Thor. He is a caricature, not someone who is humanized or one that you can empathize with. Thors best trilogy and story arc is between Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame.

I have 2 main complaints about the new thor movie. The first being that it felt rushed. Would have seen more scenes with Gorr fighting other gods or even showing that not all Gods are as sadistic as the one at the beginning and as Zeus was, that way it would show that Gorr was correct but killing EVERY god isn't right. Just most. 2, the necrosword was kinda just a sword. Was there anything actually unique about it? I get they probably had to change it because of Sony and Spiderman rights but still a lil disappointed about that.

I'm commenting a little early into the video (about 8 minutes) but I just wanna say that I think this is the first marvel movie where people could tell me it's amazing or straight up awful and I'd be able to agree with both haha. I think the god butcher story line should've been used in a different movie, but every scene Bale is in is fantastic. I've been looking at this movie through the lense of it being a rom-com and it makes it so much better. It's cheesy, and a LOT of the jokes don't land, but it's cute and it's fun and the pace is lightning fast 😏 so it doesn't feel like a chore to get through. I still think MoM is worse than this, but it's interesting that both of the most divisive marvel movies came out back to back.
@mikearchibald7442 жыл бұрын
I've kind of only heard MOST people thinking BOTH movies stank. Usually marvel and action movies can keep up good word of mouth at least for a few weeks. This isn't Dostoevsky after all. If you take any ONE of the main plots for this movie you kind of think 'how can this fail'. But now we don't need to ask.
@mattchew8mealey9212 жыл бұрын
If that plot element is remote from the movie what actual motivation do our heroes have to go on this journey?

I am on Maso's side. This was not a very good movie, yet somehow it was better than Dr. Strange 2. I think the MCU phase 4 is really suffering from not having any momentum towards anything. The first phase was building The Avengers, the second phase was breaking the team apart, and the third phase was leading up to Infinity War. What the crap are they doing now? Even if we think they are doing Secret Wars, nobody in the movies are doing any Secret War stuff! They need to stop being coy and just come out and say what they are building towards so these movies have some direction!

"from not having any momentum towards anything." It's a mess where the writers are obviously not communicating each other and are shifting the rules of the multiverse each and every time. Is there any build up to a larger event? No. They setup the next shows/movies that are coming out, but the 'setup', is just a weak advertisement. There's nothing being built up. And I thought perhaps the hammer's way to save her was not to prevent her from dying but to make her die a specific way through which she'd get to Valhalla. I mean she was gonna die anyways, perhaps in two weeks from cancer, perhaps in two days from using the hammer. But only through one of those the hammer could actually do something for her, therefore serving the encantation's purpose. But then again this could've also been just by accident. 2 things i thought might be interesting to bring up which im pretty sure weren't mentioned in this review. Thor in this movie is technically more of a God Butcher than Gorr. Off screen sure gorr takes the cake but on screen.. gorr kills some random gold guy eating fruit and thor literally kills THE ZEUS. sure he comes back to life in the end but the characters dont know that, thor immediately makes a joke about how that might cause some issues and that's all that's said. Second thing, thor literally gave a bunch of 11 year olds his power. That not only makes thor seem super unimportant now because an 11 year old can just be him on command now, but now there is 0 tension in any big fight. Why doesnt he just give all the avengers his powers? Captain America gave Thanos a good run with his first time using the hammer, imagine all of the avengers throwing lightning on top of they're already strong powers. The fact he can just give 20 people his power in half a second with no noticeable issues breaks so much lmao

They should've showed Gorr develop his vengeance and go on his killing spree etc and they should've showed Jane grapple with her cancer more (the transition to Mighty Thor was TOO QUICK). Movie just seemed RUSHED. Otherwise I thought the silliness etc were fine and I thought it was funny enough. Probably a B-ish grade for me.

Gorr should have killed those child gods (ALL gods must die is his personal mission). All members of the God races are gods, even if they have no domain. Comic Gorr tortured a Torture God until it revealed where its child was hiding. So Gorr could butcher the child God. Also, Gorr is called the God Butcher because he butchers them, not just a simple kill. Centuries of war experience having Thor made that distinction.

Feels like it did need more Gor (Goore?) and maybe presenting his motivation with a bit more sleight - feel they revealed his motivations too early, if it opens and he's already on his anti god rampage, murdering ones we do like or are seen being likable that puts us on the defensive to then get blindsided by the callousness of the bigger gods we do meet in the film, and the one that put Gor on his path in the first place.

There was so much potential, story-wise, to make this a whole trilogy. On some level, Gorr was/is more powerful than Thanos. So much so, that it took 3 THORS, to defeat him. There was enough material to make it a duology, at the very least. There would've been enough time to establish all the elements that they were aiming for. Part 1 - Thor questioning his worthiness because of the new Thor/Mjolnir relationship + establishing Gorrs power level Part 2 - Love blooming, fear taking over [?Fear itself + cameos from other experiencing fear states] + Old/Young thor introduction + Mighty Thor spotlight Part 3 - Tie it all up + same ending + MORE emotional impact I really think Marvel sort of dropped the ball here, simply because the comic arc was simply MEGA.

I think the movie was pretty good all things considered. Yeah, there were definitely some jokes that fell flat, but that's most MCU movies(hell most movies period). I actually found the heart of the film to be quite endearing. The Jane and Thor stuff didn't ever feel like it was drowned out by comedy-- In fact, I think it perfectly highlighted the way humor can be used to try and distract or help you cope with something serious. The ending was moving, however I do think it would have been far more powerful had Gorr chose to heal Jane rather than bring back his daughter. But at the same time, going forward, making Thor a Dad is good too. Plus we'll most likely see Jane again, anyways. Far better than Multiverse of Madness imo.
