As I said under part 1, there's no mention of North Africa. That's a front that often time goes unnoticed but also siphoned off resources that Germany didn't have. The Afrika Korps was largely a mobile force that relied heavily on armor that needed enormous amounts of fuel.
@heybro8845 Жыл бұрын
That’s true, although I doubt the Germans could have closed the North African front anyway. The UK didn’t really have anywhere else to fight, so they could put a majority of their forces into fighting that front, meanwhile the Germans had to worry about the Balkans, the Russians, etc. That’s not even to mention the fact that the Germans would’ve had a tough time getting there anyway given that they had to cross the Med
@problemaslaptop Жыл бұрын

The main reason for this is that the German ship building industry was just so much weaker than the British ship building industry that at the start of the war was the best in the world and was only able to be surpassed by the American ship building industry
@cristianlopez-mendez5375 жыл бұрын
@@theread3480 It is also the fact that the German navy was tiny compared to the British. Even if they started building up before 1939(Britian would of never allowed this), there is no way they would of had the resources nor the TIME to build as many ships. Also, if they started building carriers, you have to take in the fact the Germans had no idea nor experience using them and the British did. When I wrote my bachelor, I happened to read that the escape at Dunkirik had nothing to do with Hitler, or at least he wasn't very involed. The halt of the german advance was at the order of Rundstedt, I believe (or Guderian, two years since I read this), who wanted to prepare a full assault for the final offensive, not expecting so many troops to escape. Manstein argued strongly to continue the offensive, bit was overruled by Hitler in favor of Rundstedt who was the commanding officer. After the escape at Dunkirk, Hitler framed the blunder as an olive branch to the british, who themselves as were a germanic (anglo-saxon) people, and claimed this would ingratiate Britain to the german negotiating position further down the line.
@smithnwesson9905 жыл бұрын

@@smithnwesson990 Not all the British were demoralised, though some units were, a very significant part of the perimeter force holding the approaches to Dunkirk to allow those on the Beaches to be lifted off were British. You could also forgive the German High Command for not realising what would occur, because at the start of Operation Dynamo not even the Royal Navy thought they could pull so many men out of Dunkirk. The most optimistic assessments were maybe 80,000 men without equipment, and more likely down around 40,000. Instead they pulled out over 400,000 men almost half of whom were French (something many like to forget). Absolutely no one, including the Royal Navy, even thought that was possible at the start of the operation, certainly the German High Command had no idea that the RN was able to pull not only the entire BEF off the beaches at Dunkirk but also a full Army worth of French troops. Before Dunkirk it was literally thought impossible to remove that many men from a town without a functioning Port by pretty much everybody. The German High Command had every reason to expect that they did in fact have the time to gather up, resupply and rearrange their forces for a final operation to force the British and French troops around Dunkirk to surrender.

Operation Sealion - The One German preparation Exercise One single main exercise was carried out, just off Boulogne. Fifty vessels were used, and to enable the high command observers to actually observe , the exercise was carried out in broad daylight. (The real thing was due to take place at night/dawn). The vessels marshalled about a mile out to sea, and cruised parallel to the coast. The armada turned towards the coast (one barge capsizing, and another losing its tow) and approached and landed. The barges opened, and soldiers swarmed ashore. However, it was noted that the masters of the boats let the intervals between the vessels become wider and wider, because they were scared of collisions. Half the barges failed to get their troops ashore within an hour of the first troops, and over 10% failed to reach the shore at all. The troops in the barges managed to impede the sailors in a remarkable manner - in one case, a barge overturned because the troops rushed to one side when another barge "came too close". Several barges grounded broadside on, preventing the ramp from being lowered. In this exercise, carried out in good visibility, with no enemy, in good weather, after travelling only a short distance, with no navigation hazards or beach defences, less than half the troops were got ashore where they could have done what they were supposed to do. The exercise was officially judged to have been a "great success" Take into account the real landings would have used tugs to tow 2 flat bottomed barges each for 30 hours, at a max speed of 3 knots into tidal currents of 5 knots at times once it changed against them, Under attacks from the Raf and Royal Navy where even the wake of a close passing Destroyer would be enough to turn turtle a flat bottomed Rhine barge, It would be a miracle if 10% of the proposed invasion force even made it to the beaches.

Some people have already mentioned it in the comments, but "War Games" in this context refers to the weeks or months long simulations of war done by Officers and military advisors in order to get at least a general idea of what risks and opportunities could come up in a theoretical conflict.

Hm, while an interesting topic it would probably require a lot of changes to alter the history enough to change the outcomes in a meaningful way. Like if the carriers had been at Pearl Harbor and how the pacific war might have progressed differently to the Battle of Midway turning out in an opposite way etc etc. Same for all the other things like the decisions for wartime production and demands set. Or if the italians wouldn't be so unsuccessful in north africa how that had changed things, or if the axis took malta (iirc). There are so many tactical and strategic points to consider where A influences B which in turn influences C but not D but if A had failed then it would get along etc. So yeah, one can never say for a certainty that things would always turn out as it did. But yeah for Germany to win, however that victory would look like a lot would need to be different and it likely wouldn't be a total victory too as even a step by step instead of all at once would be unfeasible due to nuclear weapons appearing sooner or later and that would alter the "game" on quite a few levels again too.

Great point about let's define winning, in this context. Usually a victory condition seems clear now, but most people win enough and then move on to the next hot contest. Winning, as they thought of it and were willing to accept may not be perfectly clear to us with our remove.

There is a serious discussion in a video from Military History Visualized that talks about Germany going for North Africa instead of Russia. It is called Afrika Corps 6 Months Early - Alternate History, there they talk about a possibility of Germany winning this way. Another possibility would be if the Germans didn't spend so much resources on Rzhev. That was the place where most men and equipment was sent, even during Fall Blau and Stalingrad.

I feel one of the most overlooked situations is just that modern countries (20th century and beyond) would have no way to win conventional war where the objective is invade/defeat/win without the war is being completely isolated to strictly two sides with no other entities interested in the international outcome one way or the other. Even if Germany were to have 'won', what were they really winning? Delaying a future rife with extreme international backlash? There's just no time-line short of complete global dominance that would have seen them outrunning the international consequences indefinitely. They were always going to lose the moment they spilled the conflict into occupational campaigns and would have all suffered tremendous global repercussions even if their victory had remained exclusively within borders/kept internal.

When they meant war-gamed. They actually meant a re-enactment of how such a battle would have gone. With the attacking team and general drawing up invasion plans, and the defenders setting up how to defend the coast. So when he said they war-gamed how an invasion of Britain would have gone, they took into account the size of the navies at the time, as well as other factors and planned an attack/ defense accordingly. It's the same thing the US does with its allies in the pacific.

To put the Naval disparity in the Channel into perspective, at the time of the Battle of Britain, the Kreigsmarine had 3 Cruisers and 4 Destroyers ready for sea. Just a few months before, during the invasion of Norway the Germans had lost half of their destroyer force. Not half of the force committed, but literally half of their entire Destroyer force. In contrast the Royal Navy had, in British waters alone (and not including powerful forces elsewhere), 7 Battleships, 2 Aircraft Carriers, 30 cruisers and around 100 destroyers. The Royal Navy had as many *battleships* as the Germans had total surface ships available at the time they were starting to plan Sealion. Let that sink in. To make matters worse the RAF did not need to win air superiority over Britain or the Channel, they only had to maintain a state of contested airspace. The most effective anti shipping aircraft Germany had available at the time was the Ju 87 Stuka. During the first two weeks of the Battle of Britain the Luftwaffe had lost a quarter of its Ju 87 strength, the casualties were so high the Luftwaffe pulled them out of the battle after two weeks. In a contested airspace the Ju 87 was a sitting duck against a competant air defence system, and Britain had, at the time, the only fully integrated Radar led air defence system in the world. Add to this the often overlooked fact that in September of 1940 the RAF actually had more fighters and fighter pilots than it had at the *start* of the Battle of Britain and you can see the Luftwaffe has a bit of a problem. Many people state the RAF was close to exhaustion, and it likely was, but it is a very real fact that the Luftwaffe was actually *closer* to breaking when the Battle was called off than the RAF was. The Luftwaffe was certainly not able to replace either air frames or pilots to the degree the British were able to. EDIT: And wargaming scenarios is almost as old as warfare, though the modern version is somewhat more recent, being based on systems pioneered by the prussian Army in the 19th Century as they set up their Staff Officer training. Wargaming is a well developed method not only of testing out possible scenarios, but also training for high level officers and staff officers without going through the expense and disruption of moving entire armies about in the real world. Of course, this comes with the caveat that the more realistic the rules the more realistic the results, certainly in one case the japanese rewrote the rules of a wargame to get the result they wanted, which is one of the reasons they decided to actually engage at Midway (they made the assumption the IJN would spot the USN first in all eventualities, which did not happen!).

@@agentc7020 It has the most influence, yes. But it's hard to get around that pretty much any decision that matters needs either unanimity or a qualified majority (which is something like 80% voting in favor), so it really doesn't take much in smaller countries to frustrate things if they really didn't like something. Even beyond that Germany is but a fraction of the total EU population, so even in that they aren't really as dominant as one might think. Especially as some of the 'smaller' counties have surprisingly large populations of their own still. Beyond that Spain and Italy are far closer in scale to France and Germany then one might think. Basically, it's probably best to not underestimate the other remaining countries to much, they still very much matter. This is why EU decisions are typically very much compromises to keep everyone some what happy. And most new EU rules due to this are pretty much passed with unanimous agreement.
