Jeremy Jimenez they didn’t know that it was another continent though. While they didn’t forget it (there were legends of a rich land named Vinland with screaming natives for hundreds of years), they didn’t make a big deal about it and never realized that they hadn’t simply discovered another large island. So depending on your definition of discovery, they could have done it. However, if that’s the definition then there are theories with some weight for the Irish, romans, Polynesians, or even west Africans discovering America first, but none of those have been proven. I personally think that either the Polynesians or Romans discovered America first, but nothing can be proven before the Vikings

Maybe there were a few contingents here and there that might've made it previously, but those incidences don't seem to have made the lasting impact that Columbus' voyages did. So if say the Romans made this discovery, but then never followed it up with more voyages, how much more recognition should we give it? Same with the Vikings. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they seem to have wintered there for a few years then left and never returned. How significant should I find this and how should it shape my understanding of history?

SOME places at this time had representation though, but there was representation of places with like no citizens in them appointed by like 3 rich people who got their own rep in the parliament serving their interests. This was because they set up the system in like the Middle Ages when some cities didn't really exist and other places had people in them that didn't later on. Manchester for example which was a city of like a million had none while bumtownshire with nobody living there had one. It was weird, so weird that it actually ALMOST led to a British revolution with the same pretense as the American one, but the rulers of Britain had been through this gambit before and eventually gave up power wisely.

Sure, relative to Europe, Africa and Asia they didn’t know “where they are” but in all likelihood, the Aztecs and Mayans had knowledge of the American continent (North/South), which would mean they “know where they are”. Its the same for Europe, except before discovering America their maps were incorrect. It’s the same for the Western Hemisphere, just the opposite perspective. It’s kind of racist to say Colombus discovered America if advanced peoples already lived there. It’s only because the Europeans write history from their perspective, not the perspective of the world

During this time you come to know this island like the back of your hand you know where the food grows and where the water is sourced; you could circle this entire island blindfolded if you had to, but ultimately even if you have learned every inch of this island your location is still an unknown and until someone with a greater knowledge of the world around them finds you to tell you where you are your location will still be undiscovered because you have no means to ever find out on your own.

Made a quick search, so the Boston tea party costed like 1.000.000 to 1.700.000 dollars (couple of different sources, including the boston tea party ships museum). Quite expensive

So the taxation was essentially because we refused to help pay for the war that Britain fought to protect the colonies. In some ways I almost think it would have been better to help pay for the war.

You are right about Columbus, to his dying breath he refused to believe that he had discovered a new continent, he fervently believed that he had landed on the other side of India.
@mcglynn205 жыл бұрын
On the Columbus thinking he was in Asia thing, he claimed that he had found Asia to his death. It is also important to note that one reason for this might not be because he thought he'd found Asia, but because his agreement with the Spanish was that'd he'd become Viceroy of any territories he discovered. Any territories... in Asia.

About the question at 25:20, I think it depends in whether, in the bottom of yourself, you think a cause is legitimate or not. I mean, of course nationalism push practically anyone to approve every goal your country may have against external enemies. But if war is played at home and it's a legit cause (even British people could understand that as they may see the Americans as their equals and not just simple colonists and empathize with them) then I think the longer the war goes, the more American public opinion sides with their leaders (at least, psychologically) and British people disapprove their king's campaign. Maybe it's got more to do with the battle taking part at strictly national or foreign territory. We could see that at the Eastern front in WW2, Vietnam and many other examples it comes to my mind. Great video!

I like that you have a very rational and neutral approach to this. I mean obviously the topic sparks some kind of national feelings in a lot of americans and brits, so it is great to see that you manage to stay as neutral as you did.

I think Columbus was aware that he was somehwere new, obviously. It wasn't on any map but I vaguely remember that he didn't really (and couldn't) quite grip that it was a whole new continent and not just a collection of big-ish islands or whatnot. He thought he was somewhere east of Japan, but probably not realizing how freaking huge the Americas are.

2:30 my mother discovered I stole from the cookie jar. It is semantics. 26:00 I would argue that war in general has three stages, Early mid and late game. Early the attacker has the advantage, mid the defender and late is a toss up. The colonies could have gained an early victory IF they were already unified on a victory goal. Had they pushed the British entirely off the continent at the beginning, before reinforcements from the home island arrived, they could have claimed victory. Attacking from the sea without a foothold would have been impossible. However they were not unified at the start and the British was allowed the time to reinforce. This leads into the mid game where the attacker is over extended or played their hand and the defender now has the resources to counter. The goal for the colonies now is to regroup and hold out until the british overextend themselves. In this case the colonies had the advantage in the late game, because waging a war across an ocean is already difficult and Britain already had established rivals who were willing to shoot themselves in the foot to hurt them.
