I must try the 4th technique as I never would have thought to try it. Trying new stuff every time, got some bigger bands tonight to try actually :) Paint method looks like it would work great with an ice dye, thank you for that suggestion! After watching the last one - have you ever tried just putting one color on one side and another color on the second? Say blue on one and yellow on the other so they green in the middle? I may try this although I generally stick to ice but these really came out nice :O

Any tips on cross contamination?? My gloves get so dirty, last night I went through 3 pairs of gloves and I kept getting dye finger prints on the t shirt before I dye it. Are there special gloves I can get that wipe off easily?
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
I use tight fitting disposable gloves from Costco, they are Nitrile and wipe off easily ... I used to use dish washing gloves, but they were loose fitting and difficult to wipe off .... I always have a stack of wet rags around when I am dyeing, just bulk cotton wash clothes from Walmart .... but yeah that can be frustrating to get spots before you start ✌🏻

Hey Mr Tie Dye, Ive been having trouble tie dying with black specifically, it always ends up bleeding red or blue onto the white lines and I’ve tried all sorts of mixing methods, I would really love any tips or advice you would have for that I would appreciate it so much!
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
yeah most blacks will have some sort of a bleed on the edges, I tried a few different black dyes over the years and what finally worked for me was to use a mix of them, I tried it first, a little from each tub... I liked the results, so I took my three black dyes from Dharma ... Raven Black, New Black and Better Black ... and poured all three powders into one large jar and shook it up.... that is now my black dye mix... when I run low, I buy one of each and pour them in... here are some other tips about black dye I have on my FAQ's page : I add 2 tbsp of salt & 2 tbsp of urea to 32 oz of luke warm water, the urea helps to mix more powder into the water and the salt is supposed to help 'push' the dye out of the water and into the fabric when doing LWI. I use twice as much black dye powder than I do for any other color. For 32 oz of dye, I use 4 heaping tbsp's of dye powder, SO, a little math here >> one level tbsp is 3 tsp, so with my heaping tbsp, I guess it is 5-6 tsp per scoop, so times 4, that is 20-24 tsp for 32 oz of black dye, or 10-12 for 16 oz of black dye dye. When mixing the black dye, even with the urea, all of the powder still does not dissolve on the first blend, so I carefully pour it through a filter into the bottle, but I leave the bottom of the cup as there tends to be 'black gunk' there. This powder is still needed, so I add more fresh water to the cup and blend again and then this powder will usually dissolve. DO NOT pour it out, or your black will not have its full recipe included and the color will be off. One more thing, black dyes take longer to set up, so that is why I started leaving my dyes to batch for 48 hours... it was for the black dyes to start and then I liked how all of my colors looked, so I started batching everything I dye for 48 hours with some heat. 70F is a good temp to batch at, but I stack my tub near a heater vent or out in the sun depending on the weather so they get some nice heat while batching.
@kylemessicktiedyecollector56903 жыл бұрын
Whoa!!!!!! I just heard it though I really realize it how to make Light spider design and we put the Dark Knight Batman Logo on it with my mom and it turned out really Awesome and Outstanding....... so how many colors do you have right now like: 10-12 32 oz of large jar to find Raven Black, Jet Black, New Black, and Better Black...... you had to sorts some mixing methods, I rather than just talking more something else I would really love any tips and tricks, and do you have any like blues of Pounds like 1.Ib from Dharma, 25-40 of Pounds Jars and when is the last time did you already just bought the colors like anything from 10 years.

hi! I used the crumple method with yellow dye and it came out beautiful with white spots. but after washing it, the white turned to yellow. How do I avoid that?
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
To start, I would batch the tee for longer I like 48 hours with heat added, I do this by stacking the tubs in the sun, or near a heat vent) so more of the dye bonds with the cotton fibers and I would add some heat if you can... this helps speed things up, but also, by the time you are ready to rinse and wash, the dyes are almost exhausted, so there is less chance of back staining. Here is how I batch my tees : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLqIGHl82NgKM After you are done batching, I start by rinsing in cold water to wash away the soda ash while the tee is still tied up...... and I would use Synthrapol or other pH neutral soap like Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they will help keep the dyes suspended in the water ... here is my washing video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmGwkKGpqbCeoK8 and one more thing just in case, here is my Beginner's Playlist :kzbin.info/aero/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
I use Deep Orange from dharma .... when I said I mixed this one some, I meant that I had a little bit of Deep Orange dye, but not enough to dye these 4 tees with it, so I add some Lemon Yellow and Fuchsia and kept testing on white paper towel to make sure I did not lose my shade of orange ... but I have not figured out the exact measurements for it, so I just buy the Deep Orange ... sorry for the confusion 😉✌🏻

I have a technical question of dyeing. When I apply dye to one side, flip the shirt over and dye the opposite side. That's common sense - my question is after the dye is applied does it need to stay in the same face down position for the whole cure. Is it important not to flip it? Does it need 24 hour cure one direction then flipped over for the last of the 48 hours? Does it even matter?
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
the only time I think about the position of a tee while batching is when I have dyed one side with black, I tend to batch the darker side of a tee down as some dyes still move around a bit with gravity while batching... so I like the black or dark side to be down .... so I leave them as is for 48 hours after I put them in the tub.

I sometimes have an issue with my Fuchsia penetrating the top of the fabric through to the center, any suggestions?
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
yes I think that is an issue many have... one thing I have added to my dyes is Calsolene Oil to help the dyes penetrate better... I add 16 drops in 16 oz of dye.... but I may try adding more to some colors like fuchsia or plum www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/calsolene-oil.html Another thing I do is press on sections of the fabric to get the dyes to soak in further ... I use my cuticle pusher and press on it after adding dye... you can see it puddle up some and then when you release the pressure, the dye soak in... then I add more dye and do it again I hope this helps you with your saturation issue

I tried the green and black back. But the orange area turned brown.
@MrTieDye3 жыл бұрын
the more you try it, the more you will get a feel for how much dye to add .... one thing you can try is add the green and then use thick black dye just to cut down on how much liquid you are adding into the tee... you can also set it black side down on a towel so some of the excess liquid can be soaked up... and be sure to batch it black side down as gravity will allow the dye to soak in more

I am not sure, I just turn on the camera and go for it, so I do not remember everything I say in them ... but I use Deep Orange ..... and I have used and probably still have some daffodil... but sometimes it is quicker to add a bit of orange to lemon yellow if I already have them mixed and want a little bit of a darker yellow
