just been doing a paper and then watching your walkthroughs as it’s my mocks this week. had non calc today and it ended up being the exact same paper as paper 5 i went through last night, just different numbers so i aced it!! these walkthroughs are so helpful i really appreciate it.

Lucky! Remember you won’t be quite so blessed for the real one in June, so keep practicing past papers! After you’ve done lots, it gets to the point where every question you’ve pretty much seen before!

Thank you for your help, my maths teacher just repeats what’s on the board all year and tells us to revise if we don’t get something which counters the purpose of what we go to school for so thanks again. 😃

for question 6b why did you multiply by 1 million should it not be divide by 1 million as converting from cm to m you need divide
@MrTompkins8 ай бұрын
You're right, you would divide to convert cm^3 to m^3. But here we are not converting lengths. We are converting densitiy, which is a compound unit Notice that the cm part appears after a "/". This is because Density is mass (g) divided by volume (cm^3), giving g/cm^3, or grams per cubic centimeter. It's a bit like the volume (cm^3) part appears in the "denominator" part of this compound unit. Think if you had a fraction, for example 1/4. Dividing the denominator by 2 gives 1/2 - you've actually made the fraction bigger not smaller!

Q3 how is it multiplication if you have to divide distance by speed to get the time ?
@MrTompkins Жыл бұрын
Yes, my first instinct was to get out the DST triangle and divide. But the first value they give is weird - it's not actually speed. They say light takes 3.3x10^-6 seconds to travel 1km (speed is km per second, not seconds per km!). We need to work out how long it takes light to travel 1.5x10^8 Km. Hence we need to multiply.

Is it just me or is question 5 a pretty bad question? (the third set of triangles). While it's true that you don't initially know the angle between the 2 sides, it's quite easy to calculate. Let's say: TOP LEFT ANGLE = X and LOWER LEFT ANGLE = Y . We can use 6/sin(50) = 7/sin(Y) so Y = 63.3 deg. Thus X = 180 - 50 - 63.3 = 66.7 deg [1DP] . The angle X can be calculated the same way for both triangles and will be equal - thus both triangles are congruent. I understand that we had to use extra calculations to get the angle and couldn't go straight to using SAS (Or any of the other listed methods which is why I'm guessing the answer "No" is accepted). However, after a couple of extra steps we can actually say with certainty that both triangles are congruent so I think it's so wrong that "No" is listed as the correct answer on the marking scheme.

Agreed! They should have picked numbers where only one difinitive answer was possible. Seems a bit lazy to me.

im sure question 3 is actually 8 minutes and 25 seconds because 495 divided by 60 = 8.25
@MrTompkins10 ай бұрын
Working with time is tricky because it uses base 60 (60 seconds in an minute, 60 minutes in an hour), and not decimal base 10, which we normally count in. When you divide 495 by 60, you are converting seconds to minutes, so 495/60 is 8.25 minutes, or 8 and a quarter minutes. But a quarter of a minute is not 25 seconds. It's 60/4=15 seconds. You see me using the [o ' "] key on the calculator, as this converts easily between decimalised time and hrs/mins/seconds in one keystroke!

For question 18 it is not a right agle
@MrTompkins Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's not a right-angled triangle, so we cant just use the lengths of the sides to find the area. But the base and height I use in my answer are at right-angles!

for question 13, how did u get 90
@MrTompkins Жыл бұрын
It’s from the 2-digit number part of the number plate. Question says it can be any number between 10-99, of which there are 90!
@emilywhite86877 ай бұрын
@@MrTompkins wouldnt it be 89
@AlistairBain-mj3yz7 ай бұрын
@emilywhite8687 No - it would be 90 because 10 is one of the possible numbers that can be picked. It's similar to this : Imagine if you could pick any number from 0 to 89. You have 89 possible numbers from 1 to 89 so you might instinctively think you have 89 options. But picking 0 is also an option. So there's 90 options in total.

Maybe a rounding error? Did you round off any of your answers before getting to the end?
@FrasierDavies6 ай бұрын
these videos are extremely helpful but you do need to go over your answers before you put them on KZbin because I'm on q3 and you've already made a simple mistake so just for the future bare this in mind.

I'm certainly not infallible, but I'm pretty positive that I didnt make a mistake in the first 3 questions of this paper. What did you think was incorrect?

@@MrTompkins I have just watched the start of this video as I have this exam tomorrow, and I see no errors in the first few questions at all so I think he's just seeing things, or he probably needs to stick with the foundation paper

@MrTompkins6 ай бұрын
The majority of comments are students making a mistake and asking me to show them where they made it. I'm guessing you have done the same here. Did you get 8mins 25 for question 3? This is incorrect. It should be 8 mins 15 seconds as time is in base 60 and not base 10. You're welcome.
