For Soviet hockey teams playing the Buffalo Sabres was a nightmare in The Auditorium in Buffalo. The Sabres were really talented from 1975 and the early eighties. One of those terrific teams that didn't win a Stanley Cup. What a great crowd that night in Buffalo to cheer the Sabres as they wasted Tretiak and the so formidable Red Army team. Loved watching this classic.

Being on the road on the small rinks of the NHL affected them. The Aud was also smaller than an ordinary NHL rink..I think only 196 feet. The game is completely different and skating means much more.
@drobson8004 Жыл бұрын
Why does skating mean much more on a small rink?
@miskwaad Жыл бұрын
It means more on a larger rink. Olympic rinks..non NHL..are 60 meters by 30 meters. Nearly as long but fourteen feet wider. The neutral zone is eight feet longer. The nets are further out from the end boards (two feet). Having played on both surfaces the extra room changes the game for speed, especially on the outside. As a defenseman, intelligence and speed mean more as you're more vulnerable to breakouts.

@@Andyvas375 Bowman was unlucky in 81, with Canadian goalie Mike Liut play terribly. Just like Tretiak in this game. It happens. Same thing happened in 79 challenge cup. Dryden and Cheevers played terrible goalie. But Canadians didn't make good technical choices on some players, sometimes popularity versus technical ability. For example in 1979 Bill Smith would have been a far better choice over Cheevers and Dryden. Don Edwards was the Vezina winer that year and never got selected to be NHL goalie against Soviets. Excuse me, but what BS! NHL All-Stars blew the lead themselves, because they couldn't create much offense at all especially later in the game. And they shouldn't have been ahead in the first place, it's just that Tretiak was awful in the game, as he faced only 16 shots and yet gave up 4 goals (Dryden faced 31, let in 5). In fact, coach Tikhonov was so unhappy with Tretiak's performance that he put a newcomer like Myshkin in goal for game 3 (and he recorded a shutout, hah!). USSR certainly did have any advantage in goal in game 2 of the Challenge Cup. And BTW, Cheevers didn't suck in the 1974 Summit Series between the Soviet national team and WHA's Team Canada at all, quite the contrary.

Understatement of the year :D Seriously, there are at least 3 goals that are scored from anywhere else but a prime scoring area. People tend to badmouth Ken Dryden vs the Soviets (see e.g. the comments below), but when did he ever play this badly? Tretiak was a great goalie and had many legendary performances, but he had his fair share of awful games too. Like the 1979 Challenge Cup, USSR won that in spite of Tretiak, not because of him.
@jimturner49373 жыл бұрын
@@aholli8748 I saw the comments about Dryden. Let's be honest, Dryden never had even one good game against the Soviets. Not one. He was way over rated as a goalie. He stood out only because he had the Montreal Canadiens in front of him. There were far better choices available. Villemure, Vachon, Edwards were all much better goalies. Roy Edwards isn't well known but he was spectactular that year. He had a great GAA even though he was on a fairly mediocre team.

@@jimturner4937 What was wrong with Dryden in game 6 of the 1972 Summit Series? Or in game 1 of the 1979 Challenge Cup? I fail to see it. And it was Tretiak who let in 3 goals (Dryden zero) in the 3rd period of game 8 in the 1972 series, and so Team Canada won.
