Always loved watching the Soviets play hockey. So smooth, so fluid. Not into the physical play of the nhl but into moving the puck, finding open ice. They were the best, by a long shot. It was literally nothing short of a "miracle" what those kids did in the 80 Olympics.

Funny most of the 1995 red wings were that teM. They were jokingly refered to as Russia west. They had the same smoothness and fluidity and the new Jersey devil's their size and neutral zone trap swept Russia Soviets west in 4 straight. Don't think the Soviet red army team in this video would've done much better especially with the red line and 2 line passes counting as offside

I put that through the google translator...hope it was accurate, and you are correct. I remember as a young Canadian boy (but a Calgary Flames fan) was always interested in watching these games, we saw it as an Allstar team (russia) against a very good NHL team (at that time). Love the way the Russians moved the puck.

From watching this you can really see the no nonsense Russian style of training come to fruition or life. I didn't matter how hard the Oilers hit them, or what line CSKA went up against, they just don't get tired. Really impressive to watch. Not to mention they are a good hockey club.

Three months earlier, on October 23, 1985, the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Edmonton Oilers 9:3, thus while obviously CKSA is the superior team to the Oilers, the Winnipeg Jets are actually 100% more superior than CKSA, by outscoring the Oilers by 6 goals instead of CKSA's 3 goals. Therefore, the Winnipeg Jets are the greatest, no nonsense, Winnipeg style, training team of all time. Right?

Sure, ONE game says it all...that's why the Jets have ALL those Stanley Cups, right? Don't get me wrong, if it weren't for Winnipeg's European style influence during their '70's WHA, rogue league era, the NHL may still be in the Dark Stages of development. They influenced the Oilers and Nordiques game, coming to the NHL. Had the NHL not raided that Jets roster while joining league, I believe they'd have been an instant contender, top 4 team.

Partly true. Wayne was an expert at stealing pucks and intercepting passes so in that way he was very useful when killing penalties. He was never supposed to play defense deep in the defensive zone. But to say that he would just wait and then go on the attack is not the complete picture.

I wonder if Badger Bob studied this game to develop his 7 point plan to dethrone the Oilers...look at how the Soviets clog the blue line, forcheck, and take advantage of often horrible defensive play. That's why Edmonton never won more than two consecutive Cups; offense alone, even the best ever, just isn't enough. By the way, that fifth Soviet goal is a masterpiece! Sto tiesyach spasib for sharing this classic game!

@@davemackay9426 Your subjective judgement does not accurately describe the Flames, the 1985-86 series, this game, or even the NHL in the 1980s. The Oilers, too, had violent guys, like Messier, McClelland, and McSorley; Anderson put his stick into a lot of people too. Gretzky approved of his teammates' antics while he contradictorily condemned fighting. Most teams back then had an abrasive side. Singling the Flames out is unjust. The Islanders dynasty players were talented and tough; they had good fighters. Montreal's 70's dominance was likewise; witness how Larry Robinson's handling of Dave Schultz earned him- and the Habs- respect around the league. The Flames' focus on toughness dates from their time in Atlanta, competing with the Broad Street Bullies; the Flyers decided to emphasize physical intimidation from their early days, when they were beaten up by the Blues. Jean Beliveau's Canadiens were benefitted by John Ferguson's size, toughness and violence; five Cups in seven years (1965, 66, 68, 69, 71). The last Toronto dynasty was a collection of talent and abrasiveness too. And so on. In 1986, the underdog Flames had talent as well as toughness, and this game alone proves it. The mighty Oilers had flaws, and this game proves it. It was an epic series. Dislike the Flames as you please, it's a matter of personal taste, of passion, but not based much on the facts. Few polite teams win Cups; talented and tough teams do. The Oilers were no exception.

-snip- "...The cannon shot that truly heralded the advent of neoliberalism in Canada was the interest rate shock that occurred here in the early 1980s, overseen by the Bank of Canada's then-governor Gerald Bouey. This was an echo of the similar shift in monetary policy that had occurred south of the border a couple of years earlier: the famous "Volcker shock," engineered by U.S. Fed chairman Paul Volcker beginning in 1978. This action, by an unelected economic authority, laid the foundation for the advent of neoliberal macroeconomic priority (abandoning full employment, prioritizing the interests of financial wealth, and ushering in a new ideology of tough love capitalism). The interest rate shocks were cemented politically in short order with the election victories of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan (and, shortly after, Brian Mulroney in Canada -- although it wasn't until Stephen Harper's election in 2006 that Canada experienced unforgiving, no-holds-barred neoliberal government of the sort pioneered by Thatcher and Reagan)." - rabble.ca/columnists/2014/04/three-key-moments-canadas-neoliberal-transformation

Gretzky killed penalties for the first 15 seasons of his career. In fact -like lordraven1980 said -he led the league in short-handed goals 5 times ('82-'85, '87) with a since eclipsed single season record of 12 shorties in '84. He also retired with the all-time career record for short-handed goals-73.

Whether one of them plays or not it matter. If Igor played you could have put two more goals on the board. In fact the ONLY reason Canada won the Canada Cup in 1984 was because of four key Soviet players missing from the roster.(Fetisov, Bykov, Drozetdsky and Tretiak retired. Actually, if Fetisov,Bykov and Drozedtsky played it would not matter if Tretiak retired since Myshkin and Tyznik played so well in the Canada Cup 1984.. It's an unfair assumption to say that the Russian teams were better than NYI and EDM based on the Superseries games because most of the NHL teams were never going to put their best lineups out for an exhibition game against an amateur team (albeit the best amateur team in the world). When you're trying to make the playoffs and win a Stanley Cup, the Supereseries, although a great idea, was never taken as seriously by the NHL teams.
