Multiple Sclerosis? Even So, It Is Well

Foot drop, or drop foot, is a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). In this video I describe what it is and how it can be treated with physical therapy, exercise, functional electrical stimulation (FES), ankle foot, orthosis (AFOs), and medicine.

What other topics would you like me to make videos on? And what other tips do you have for foot drop and foot symptoms?

Thank you. I have had the foot drop. I called it a foot drag. My gait is off. I can understand the foot slap.🤦🏻‍♀️Also, my right knee does not noticeably extend properly like my left knee does. I’m going to talk to my PT guy about some of the things you’ve said in this video because it makes perfect sense. Nobody has helped me, or suggested anything. I can’t believe I came across your video and you described everything so well. 😊 Also I did get a spinal fusion. 😞-cspine fusion. You are the very first person to make sense of it all. I have constant headaches. Getting trigger point injection next week. It helped before. But I’m going to follow some of your advice. I’m going to take it super serious. Yoga, strength training, and the right diet. I’m not sure what to eat and what not too. What causes inflammation and what does not? It’s very confusing. I’m going to ask about a round of steroids. I believe I have a neurologist appointment in July. I’m definitely going to check back and try to learn more from your videos. That way I can take the information to my doctor. I don’t know if I have a MS or not but it’s starting to sound like it. Your video was so enlightening and helpful. I’m not scared. I feel more informed now, I feel like I’ve actually learned something helpful. I can take this information to my physical therapist, primary care doctor, as well as the neurologist. I feel like I can explain things better now. It’s hard to explain what I’m experiencing. But thanks to you, I can now. Thank you.😊

Very helpful thank-you, I am trying to get a diagnosis at the moment, my left foot is completely frozen and the toes and will not lift up, I keep tripping up and have lots of other symptoms but it’s frustrating trying to get Dr to understand.. I am 45 he said when I went to see him a few years ago, it’s just old age not MS? 😂 cheeky sod I thought! Thanks 🙏 again!

I don't know if I have footdrop or not. At odd times it will suddenly drop and my toes will catch on the ground. I have had some bad falls because of it. It is more likely to happen if I am wearing shoes. My GP said no. He was not helpful as I feel if it is not footdrop he should be able to tell me what it is but he didn't bother (or he didn't know)..

Hi Wendy, I am sorry that is happening and your doctor says it isn’t foot drop. Check out Dr. Gretchen Hawley’s channel she has some videos with exercises that may be able to help you with your walking. www.youtube.com/@DoctorGretchenHawley

My way of getting around this is to walk slowly. It works. Sometimes that can be hard if I am with anyone but I must keep reminding myself how I felt when I fell on my face (on a concrete footpath). Thank you for your advice, I appreciate that.@@EvenSoItIsWell

@@EvenSoItIsWell I was diagnosed in december. I was admitted for 4 months in hospital in canada. Since then I have a foot drop which is not recovering. Doctors say that ms is in control now but my symptoms are not going. The numbness, current shocks, needles pain, depression. I am fed up of everything.

@@rupamrandhawa1480 I am sorry you are experiencing this. Four months is still a very new diagnosis. Please be gentle with yourself. Continue to improve your diet, exercising regularly (work with a physical therapist on which would be best for you - I recommend Dr. Gretchen Hawley and The MS Gym in KZbin as well), get good sleep, and practice mindfulness/kindness. Over a period of months of taking exquisite care of yourself you may see great improvements!

Unfortunately, as we all have different areas of damage to our nervous system we are never sure. The best we can do is to create the best health we can with diet and lifestyle changes and also work with our doctors to help manage our symptoms. I will share that it has been my experience that the better care I take of myself, the less my symptoms trouble me.

Is it possible to only have foot drop with specific activities like running, but not noticeable with walking?

Hi Lisa! Yes, Uhthoff’s phenomenon can cause temporary worsening of some symptoms in MS. It can be linked to body temperature going up or increased stress (both physical and emotional). I get increased symptoms in my left foot when I am exercising.

I am A 50 year old male non-white that has these problems. It's been confirmed but they have been five doctors that I have been to that have told me that only happens to white women. Friday almost fell in a restaurant on a birthday outing today almost fell twice throwing out the garbage I use a cane.
