There was some political stuff mixed in on Twitter with people using the term but it was Twitter. The term feels heavy like talking about the ramifications of gentrification now a days when in 2018 it was giving the same weight as the term "your done," or "no cap." I am just genuinely curious because seeing a term being used by a bunch of teenagers and young adults turned into this serious discussion about representation in media by people who don't fit the stereotype of people using it in 2018ish is very jarring.

The term "Woke" implies that the movie is pushing a certain political messageor idealogical belief based on the views of the author. The people who use it for diversity are just using it wrong on purpose making them ignorant. The pushing of a message in a heavy handed way as if the character stops and looks into the camera to say "This is what you need to be doing." that's how the term should be used. But I wonder why no one ever brings up movies produced, writen & starring Robert Townsend or Mario Van Peebles & his Father. These men did amazing things inspite of Hollywood for the black culture, and all people ever talk about when it comes to Black movies is Black Panther. By not showing respect to those who were doing it when times were much harder is leaving their accomplishments in the shadows cause they didn't have giant corporations and billions behind them. What Disney is doing now is great but they do get a little heavy handed sometimes yes, much as we all do when we want to share something we believe in. Ms Marvel isn't woke she's an idea, for some little girl who, has never seen someone who looks like her on a screen in a lead role. Now if she spends every episode trying to convert viewers to Islam then she'd be woke. This just looks like an old school John Hughes coming of age story with super powers and if people are hating on happy then that's just sad.

Ms.Marvel should be acknowledged as an individual. The fact that Korey kept bringing up the fact that she’s Muslim and kept mentioning diversity shows that those are what really matter to him when it comes to her getting a Disney plus show. This is the issue with Wokeness, the character doesn’t matter what matters is the fact that they’re looks or image check a diversity check box. It’s not just keeping the politics secondary and not heavy handed or non existent if they’re not relevant in the first place it’s the fact that this character isn’t acknowledged as an individual as much as she’s acknowledged for being a Muslim superhero by her creators, writers and the audience. This is why the runs on the character kept failing despite her fanbase because most marvel fans weren’t interested in this character when she came out due to her just being made to fill a diversity check box. Most of the all new all different marvel characters could’ve been successful if the focus was on the characters themselves rather then filling a diversity check box and marvel preaching about how relevant they were. Peter Parker is acknowledged for being an individual character with personal struggles of a hero rather then being a Jewish superhero because Steve Ditko & Stan Lee said he was Jewish back in the 60’s.

If Korey is not as invested into something he won’t give his 💯 percent effort into analyzing it and even if he did he still could get things wrong because there are things he wouldn’t understand. Also Peter Parker being Jewish didn’t define him and it wasn’t the most relevant thing to his character he just happened to be Jewish early on in his early comics. He was a Jewish kid in the 60’s bitten by a radioactive spider and gained spider powers as a result. He just so happens to be Jewish and that’s not extremely important overall to him being Peter Parker or Spider-Man so the same approach should be made with Ms.Marvel. You guys are misrepresenting the argument, and before you accuse me of anything I'm a Peruvian immigrant and I love my culture. However, as a comic book fan and marvel fan in general, it's not that we have a problem with representation, we have a problem when the only thing that matters is representation. My favorite character has and will always be Spider-Man. I grew up with the comics and the 90s cartoon, it never and has never bothered me tha Peter was white. He was relatable, he was a well written character with real world problems along with his super hero problems. And here is the thing about Spider-Man he was designed to be relatable, he wasn't designed to be white, it didn't really matter who was under the mask. That's why I love Into the Spider-Verse so much, they nailed that point across and they effectively made Miles a better character. The biggest problem with Miles is that for a long time he just came off as a Peter Parker clone, but black and latino. So it just seemed like representation for representations sake. This is the bigger problem with the current shift in pushing representation the way it's been done recently. Most of the time it just feels like lip service and frankly that's insulting. I don't need to see myself represented solely based on the color of my skin, I like to think there is more to me than my skin color or sexual orientation and I would like to think the same goes for these fictional characters. There should be more to them than just their skin color or orientation or what have you. What I do need is interesting and compelling characters with compelling stories. Let that be the driving force and then add representation and diversity into that. You mentioned Scorsese and the like not pushing for diversity, but guess what they don't need to. They weren't writing stories that had to do with that, so pushing it would have seemed disingenuous and pandering. Diversity for diversities sake does not for a good story make. That's why when newer writers, and I hate the term woke, but let's be honest that's what a lot of these newer writers are, when they write stories for comics they do some of the most pandery shit. They want to take legacy characters and change them to fit their narrative, or they make new characters where the defining characteristic is whatever diverse quality they have. Or worse yet, they make legacy character look worse in comparison in order to prop up their newer shit characters. And it's frankly insulting when you guys just get pissed of at the void and lump everyone in one box. So now anyone who has a problem is automatically a bigot who doesn't want to see representation. And it has nothing to do with that. It's not that we don't want to see representation, I just don't want that to be the driving force. Let that be interwoven naturally. And I'm speaking for myself obviously, but I'm pretty sure there a lot of people who share this mentality. I have no problem with Kamala Kahn as a character, other than she is a fan of captain marvel who has been a shit written character for longer than she has been well written. I mean there are so many other well written characters to choose from like She Hulk. It makes more sense in the comics though where Captain Marvel has done more, but in the MCU not so much. She was around in the 90s and then helped out a little in Endgame. I don't know how that would leave such an impression on a kid, when you have other much more interesting characters in the mcu to pull from, but I'm sure the show will explain something. Anyway, this isn't to say that the show will be bad, I personally just never understood why Kamala idolized Captain Marvel and it always seemed like marvel trying to prop Captain Marvel as a character and prop her comic book sales. Anyway I'm getting side tracked. Kamala's powers also seemed kinda shit, she was basically Mr. Fantastic, but she mostly just did big fists and that's just kinda lame. So the change for the show looks promising. I guess we will see. Anyway, I just wish you guys would keep that in mind when you go off on a rant about people not wanting diversity. Your arguments (and I mean mostly Korey) don't really allow for any nuance in the conversation. When you label everyone who disagrees with you as just disgruntled white people, you ignore the fact that comic books have always been for everyone, and it's not just white people who don't like the current direction the medium has gone in. Anyway take care.
@bendu82822 жыл бұрын

Minorities can also be racist. There were literal mandates stating that comic book characters cannot be black, yes, Spiderman WAS designed to be white, just like every other white superhero was, it was a conscious choice the artists made. Your prejudice is instantly shown when you say minority characters were designed to be minorities but white characters aren't, they are. The only different between then and now is artists having more freedom of expression. There is no nuance to the conversation, this is the true state of things.

However, that doesn't make it racist. What I said is that wasn't the driving force. His whiteness wasn't the important thing. His struggles in balancing his life and how he handled his responsibility was the important thing. That's why Stan Lee and Steve Ditko made his suit a full bodied suit. It was to drive the point that it could be anyone under the mask. I also never said all minority characters are just designed to be minorities.

To clarify, they didn't want to use the terrigen mist powers to distance itself from Mr.Fantastic and Ant Man. This is why they changed Shang Chi's powers too. This could be good or bad but changing it to an artifact with "green lantern" style imagination could be good or fail.

Just by going off the trailer, it says being a hero is having powers and a costume. This looks like another daydreamer becoming something they dream about because they're special.

Honestly, I am still kinda upset that they changed her powers. Even if the source was different, because fuck the Inhumans, the stretchy body growing thing felt more unique, and tied more into her character as she didn’t have a cool flashy power like her idol, it was actually kinda gross, but she was able to make it cool. The whole trailer honestly didn’t hit me very hard, but at the same time I respect that something’s just not made for me. With The Batman having just dropped and Moon Knight coming out soon it’s nice to have a superhero property come out explicitly for kids instead of just edgy ass grown men like myself. I hope brown girls who are into superheroes like it.

I'm assuming that the CGI for her stretchy abilities probably looked off putting. CGI for human skin still looks wierd.

Wait, Korey are you relating to a character that's not the same race as you?! Interesting it's almost like the "seeing yourself" bs is media projected and you can relate to people who are not your race.
@MsDiving12 жыл бұрын
Look, everyone other than straight white men have spent most of their lives watching movies with characters different than them in movies not made for them. We’ve gotten good at relating to characters for other reasons because that was the only way to relate to them. Having said that, now that some stuff is being produced by folks with shared life experiences, there is a noticeable difference in how I can connect to works, and how much more real they feel to me. I realize that going backwards from having everything for you to losing that feeling of immersion must be uncomfortable, and I’m sorry for it, but that doesn’t make your experience the only one that matters.
@bendu82822 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If Korey can see himself in Khamala Khan then he can see himself in any character and the need for him to want the mainstream to make characters based only on diversity without the effort being put in on what makes them well written individual characters with an interesting plot is pretty sad.
@Funnycoolman112 жыл бұрын
@@MsDiving1 I mostly watch Korean TV shows so I don't know wtf you are talking about. No, you choose to watch shows with straight white male leads. Plenty of other countries have entertainment industries filled with people who are not white. Also stop pretending movies that America has very few movies/shows with non-white leads. BET is a whole channel dedicated to just that if you don't want to watch foreign TV.

The good ol “Terrigen Mists”, and it’s inert for humans unless they’re latent inhumans, but it’s lethal for mutants, and it one point, the inhumans set off a bomb that sent a roving cloud of terrigen mist across the planet. It actually killed Cyclops

Inhumans are cocooned after being exposed to the Terrigen Mists which randomly gave you different powers.Then you can choose to stay among humans,or become a citizen of the kingdom of Attilan, under the rule of Blackbolt and Medusa and the royal (Inhuman) family.
@KainGerc2 жыл бұрын
really, the fact that she's not an Inhuman in the MCU doesn't really matter that much since even in the comics it was never the focus with her. Yeah, she interacted sometimes with other Inhumans and she had some cute moments with Lockheed (the giant teleporting bulldog), but overall it never really had a major factor on her own comic and story. The fact that they changed her powers, so that instead of her genetics changing, she instead found some gadget that gave her Green Lantern powers might have more of an impact. but even that probably won't take away too much from the core of her character, which is basically a nerdy, Superhero obsessed, teenager suddenly getting powers and deciding to fight crime with them. (very much Spider-Man vibes only without the tragic dead relative part)
