Hi I live in Japan and I got an offer to an online course in data science from a top university in the US. The course is 100% online and there won’t be much interactions with the peers. It is going to be theoretical and then application based in the latter part of the course. I am not sure that after my Masters will I be at any position different from now. I am working as a software engineer here and to be honest it has not been an entertaining experience, mainly due to the extreme work culture, Japanese language problems and closed life culture here. I thought that due to the corona situation, I should consider an online masters because almost all the schools need to carry their programs online in these times. An online MBA is not worth the effort, so I opted for the online masters program instead. What shall I do, shall I wait for the corona situation to be over and then apply for MBA, or shall I not waste any time and go for an online Masters in Data Science? ROI wise I think an MBA will give more dividends in the long run, but we never know in these uncertain times. Thank you for your time.
@MBACrystalBall4 жыл бұрын
From what you've shared, seems like you're primarily looking for a career change (which is where a reputed MBA can help) as opposed to learning new skills (which is where an online degree should be fine). Don't choose either as an escape route from your current situation. Think it through to the stage where you've graduated and looking at newer opportunities. Would you be competing with full-time MBA grads for those or not? That should give you better direction.

@sameer-kamat6 жыл бұрын
What you highlight is the sad reality, Komal. Not all graduates get the break that they're looking for. Which is why, many head back to the classroom, and complete their masters before looking for a job, hoping the additional qualification will give them an advantage. Btw, we've seen folks who started out in BPO roles rise fairly quickly in the hierarchy due to their potential, and they've gone on to attend top universities. Hi Sumi, an MiM is surely an option. But before you take that plunge, make sure you are clear about what you'll get out of the course. Also evaluate if that's where you want to take your career. The risk of jumping from one degree to another is that there's no guarantee that the second degree will make you happy. While our consultants have helped many applicants get into the top German programs, here's something else to be aware of. Sir 2 years of work experience is eligible to do MBA in abroad ? Or is there any chances of rejection based on less work experience ?
@MBACrystalBall5 жыл бұрын
We've worked with several applicants with less experience. You're right, the challenge is to show that you're on par with (if not better than) the other applicants. And a high GMAT score helps. If you can't wait for a year or two (which we'd advise), make sure your essays communicate your profile strengths and clarity of goals, so you don't come across as a novice.

With the right skills and focus, you can make money in any country. But it won't be a good idea to get too obsessed with making money at this age. Do well in studies and then choose a good career where you'll enjoy more than just the salary.

Hi Sameer, I noticed someone who did Bachelors & Masters in Civil Engineering, worked in that space for a couple of years, felt stagnant/wasn't growing much and towards his late 20s (around 29 years old), got into Duke University for MBA on partial scholarship (I think around 15%, had 750 GMAT score I think) but ended up dropping it and went for MS Computer Science program in US (through a bridging program) instead citing CS has great scope, job security, high income & growth potential, etc. Got me scratching my head about comparing MBA vs MS CS (especially from the lens of someone in early 30s with over 10 YOE who doesn't have a CS background). Would love to get your thoughts.

Hi Tanya, dropping a year for competitive exams is uncommon abroad. Rather than rushing into an international degree (and facing job challenges after graduation in a foreign country), here's an alternative. Take up a job and focus on gaining some solid skills and experience. That's a good way to show that your drop year doesn't mean you aren't capable of taking on practical challenges.

Hi Yogender, applicants in public sector companies and government jobs can surely compete for the best MBA and MS programs in India and abroad. You'll have to figure out a way to convince the admissions committee about your accomplishments and career plans after graduation. And yes, a high GMAT / GRE score would help. As I m going to finish my engineering degree in may and I have to decided to pursue my higher studies in MBA INDIA. Can I able to manage the MBA.? What's your suggestion?
@sameer-kamat6 жыл бұрын
Hi Aafaque, you can try for CAT based Indian options like the IIMs. But for international MBA (that accept GMAT and GRE scores), you'll have to be more patient and get some (around 3-4 years) experience.

I m preparing for MAT exam because CAT exam is over for 2019
@sameer-kamat6 жыл бұрын
@@brokenpixells Yes, I know that CAT for the current year is over. However, there are quite a few who try for CAT multiple times after graduation, since they are clear that they only want to get into the best Indian programs. Some get in, many don't. Here's the story of someone who gave up after 4 attempts, and tried for international MBA where he got scholarships. www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2013/09/09/gmat-scholarship-after-cat-exam/ Btw, we focus only on international programs. So if you're targetting the traditional Indian programs, you could connect with others who specialise in that area. Hope you find the right path soon. Good luck!
