I am 58. I would watch AITF, with my mother. She was raised in the Deep South. She adored Archie! She would often comment she wished all bigots were as honest as him. She got the joke and taught me the same. Bigots are a joke. Modern day minstrels 😊to this day.

@@AndrewVOdom She was like that for the whole first season, which was twelve episodes, I think. Even Season 2 had some of that, but her vocal pitch was slightly higher by the end of Season 2. Season 3 is when she really started to take on the extra-sweet and affectionately dingbatty tone she's most known for. But I agree with Jean when she said that Edith is a real person in the minds of some viewers. I know I see her that way myself. I've seen all the episodes so many times that, to me, it feels like they're still alive out there somewhere in an immortal form, still living through days and experiences we no longer hear about through the TV. But the relationship between Archie and Edith sometimes seemed strangely strained to the point of being a farce. How could Archie remain married to a woman who seemed to annoy him so much, and how could sweet Edith remain married to someone who could be so nasty toward her? Yeah, they had their intimate moments when the love between them was obvious, but it was relatively rare compared to all the sometimes uncomfortable tension.
@AndrewVOdom

Phanes Erichthoneus - Well said ! They are still sort of living on in eternal reruns as it were! Also art can only replicate relationships so far. I agree it’s a bit of a farce - because it is in fact satirical. That’s the essence of comedy- exaggeration for effect.

I totally agree with you! We just love 💞 them; and have NEVER gotten bored with the show (this is now 2019). The casting was bang-on 👍... cannot imagine anyone else playing these characters!! For this family there can ONLY be: Carroll O'Connor = Archie Bunker... Jean Stapleton = Edith Bunker... Rob Reiner = Michael (Meathead) Stivic... Sally Struthers = Gloria (Bunker) Stivic... Isabel Sanford = Louise Jefferson... Sherman Hemsley = George Jefferson... Mike Evans = Lionel Jefferson... Bob Hastings = Kelsey... Burt Justin = Quigley... Estelle Parsons = Blanche Hefner... Allan Melvin = Barney Hefner... George Wyner = Dr. Sidney Shapiro... James Hong = Chinese waiter... Barnard Hughes = Father Majeski... Clyde Kusatsu = Rev. Chong... A. Martinez = Manuel... Lori Shannon = Beverly LaSalle... Gloria LeRoy = 'Boom Book's Turner... et al. Such Wonderful actors (sigh) 👏. Ooops, my apologies for going on 'n on... just love 💕 this show to bits!!! 💞 🎭 🌟

@@mchow2984 Same here. I've been on an All in the Family binge since the beginning of the year, just cycling through mostly seasons 2 through 6 and 7. I like all the episodes (except the one in which Edith is attacked by a rapist, and the one in which she's so overworked that she can't walk while Archie is pushing her to do more-those were very hard to watch). Even if I'm just falling asleep, listening to them talk is like being part of their family while I drift off to sleep.

Point Dexter - Who’s ignoring what? Your creepy utopia? But of course we are. Shouldn’t we all, sound minded regular decent people? Oh, please, let me remind you of a few more classics, besides bigot, you schizophrenics keep at the tip of your tongues to attack any perfectly reasonable thinking people, who refuse to submit to your masters of deceit and mediocrity. Although you might not even know the meaning of them, since most of you talk pretty much like a pirate’s parrot, here are some more, you maneuverable idiotic, good for nothing piece of waste matter: homophobe, misogynist, racist, fascist, neonazi. There! Do yourself a favor and save yourself the poison for your own demise - in case you haven’t noticed, vomiting politically correct gibberish doesn’t cut it any longer these days, you pathetic humanoid. How much longer did you lefturds think you could pull it off for? Which only goes to show how Archie really did get it right most of the time about people like you and the foolishly simpletons, like even Carrol O’Connor himself. Difference was Carrol might have been misinformed and didn’t know any better back in his day, but there’s no excuse now with so many dependable sources of information instantly and easily available now. So If you’re still a liberal/progressive today, on your quite predictable way to marxism, as your mental illness progresses, you’re a self conscious control freak, psychopath, con artist, all in one, wrapped in toilet paper, and in desperate need of psychiatric help (or blood, who knows the stage you’re in). May the constitution soon be enforced on the likes of you as soon as dignified honest decent people of this country and in the world wake up and join forces against your low life schemes and abject goals. You gross me out! Pewk!

@Point Dexter IGNORANT is the key word though. And NOT in a bad way. As the show progressed, we found where ARCHIE came from, in terms of his back ground. In one episode, where Archie and Meathead were locked in the basement and Archie let fly with the way he grew up. His FATHER informed a LOT of how Archie thought. His father would lock him in his room or something, and Mike's got this look on his face. He's stunned and almost sympathetic. I THINK (correct me if I'm wrong) that a big reason Norman Lear gravitated to the original series (Til Death do us Part) was because of his own relationship with his father. If I HAD to guess, I'd say that Norman was raised by a man who HAD to get married because he got a woman (Norman Lear's mom) pregnant. So much of what Norman brought to Archie was his way of trying to figure out his father. With Archie, his dad's view of rearing a kid was "My way or the Highway" . Some weird parental cult indoctrination. Thankfully, Archie did not really HATE black people or Jewish people. He just stereotyped them based on what he was taught.

@ 5:34 Bob Costas says, Because as stupid as he (Archie) may have been in his positions".. Really, "stupid"? Even though we all know the writers and actors of AITF were liberals, that doesn't make Archie's opinions wrong, or "stupid". It's just a way for liberals to show the world how they are never wrong, even though their policies are destroying America. Archie's opinions were, in many instances, correct; but he was unable to defend those positions because the writers were all liberals, including Carroll O'Connor himself.

Of course- don't engage the issue. Typical Leftist. The problem for Leftists is that the issues used to make Archie look like a bigoted, racist, ass haven't shown to be improved or resolved with Leftist Utopian social engineering. Archie Bunker was a devise used to clobber white, conservative men over age 40 over the head and shut them up. Calling your Dad or Grand Father "Archie Bunker" was an insult to shame him from expressing his views and make him doubt his thoughts about protecting his way of life and influencing the society his children would inherit. I'm old enough to remember the 60's and 70's. And I remember being a liberal and mocking "old guys", particularly my Grandfather as an "archie"- even though he employed many blacks and paid them and treated them as well as whites that worked for him. He just didn't think welfare, socialism, free love and racial egalitarianism and affirmative action were good for America. He'd lived in the world 60+ years; born into poverty in Chicago, started working at age 12, been through the Depression, fought in WWII at age 36 and built a business. He knew the cold hard facts about the world and human nature. He knew that civilization, peace and prosperity were not a given and that it can be lost easily without due diligence. As a man almost 60 now- I'd say he was right. And yet we called him Archie because we arrogantly thought we knew better. And Norman Lear fed OUR youthful, liberal, inexperienced and uninformed prejudices against men like him every week via All in the Family. And we are paying the price today with a fractured, divisive and crumbling society on the brink of collapse.

As far as Jean goes, I can see where she would not want to do the voice. I can also see where she does come across as superior, but when you think about it, she played Edith, a kind-hearted DIMWIT. Obviously, she would want to be taken seriously in real life to avoid being type-casted. So, for that matter, I don’t fault her for showing off her intelligence.

One can show off one's intelligence without being arrogant and standoffish. It's why the Edith Bunkers of the world will always have more respect than the Jean Stapletons. And by the way, Edith was very dimwitted at times but she also showed assertiveness and strength as well.

Stapleton was an amazing, incredible actor. She was a smart and articulate woman. Wonderful. RIP. However, watching some of these videos where she talks about Edith, as a figment, made up, not real… I get it. It’s important to forge something new and getting pigeon holed isn’t fun. I have to admit, listening to her put so much emotional distance between herself and the character that made her an icon is disconcerting… I admire that she was NOT Edith. Yes, she seems to take herself WAY too seriously. Its almost always the most likable characters on TV (Edith, Chrissy from Threes Company, Mary Tyler Moore etc..) who in real life are either b*tchy, difficult or just polar opposites of their character.
