You have to ask yourself: WHY would Crow have THIS image memorialized by commissioning a painting of it? THIS particular image? It's not an image of anything cool, adventurous or interesting happening. It's not a staged family image. If anything, it's reminiscent of paintings from the past, of movers and shakers signing important documents, or meeting to decide important and consequential matters. It's an obvious statement, as he showcases it prominently at his Adirondack resort. WHAT does this image SHOW people? It shows the rich powerbrokers of Georgia, seated with the Supreme Court Justice...... that THEY OWN. It shows the culmination of their vast investments and planning. They OWN a Supreme Court Justice. THAT is what this painting shows.

All the Supreme Court is supposed to do is decide what the law, as it is written means, and confirm or over rule lower court rulings. SCOTUS decides which cases they will hear. Politics has little to do with decisions of the court. Being a conservative or liberal simply means that, in general, conservative justices are more apt to use meanings of the words used in the law when it was written, while liberals are more apt to try to decide what the words mean today.

The historical function of the court has been compromised to the point of corruption through their actions. Not recusing in conflicted cases before the bench. Council for National Policy was founded in 1981, at the dawn of the Christian right and the beginning of the Reagan era. And it really represents what Jerry Falwell, an early founding member, called the big guns of the Christian right, who set the battle lines; 300 people who really comprise the entire leadership of the Christian right, and the conservative movement in general. These people kind of call themselves ‘grasstops’ leaders. You know, they kind of shepherd the Republican grassroots to the polls on Election Day. But they also kind of decide what the wedge issues are going to be and what the narrative is for the party. They have anointed the past two Republican presidents; Donald Trump back in 2015, and George W. Bush back in 1999, when they were just emerging as the figures that the Christian right would back. They also helped make Sarah Palin John McCain’s vice presidential pick Just days before she resigned as UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley delivered a private speech to the Council for National Policy, a secretive group of influential right-wing figures. Journalist Max Blumenthal obtained exclusive access and reveals shocking details - including Haley’s admission that she threatened the Chinese ambassador with a US invasion of North Korea. "And I went to the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, and walked into the auditorium, or this giant ballroom. Ginni Thomas, the wife of Clarence Thomas, walked by me. Frank Gaffney, you know, the kind of foreign policy hawk who inspired Donald Trump’s Muslim ban brushed shoulders and sat sat nearby. And I was surrounded by basically the vast right-wing conspiracy, about 300 people settling into their chairs to hear Nikki Haley speak at noon. They hold these meetings three times a year, in secrecy. The location of the meeting is not told to anyone who isn’t a member of the group. At the time of the legal challenge, from at least 2001 to 2004, Harlan Crow was a member of the Club for Growth’s prestigious “founders committee”. Though little is known about the role of the committee, it clearly commanded some influence over the group’s policy making. The 2003 legal challenge championed by the Club for Growth targeted the McCain-Feingold Act. On appeal, a consolidated version of the lawsuit, Mitch McConnell v FEC, was taken up by the supreme court. Mitch McConnell v FEC, lost their appeal McCain-Feingold Act was allowed to stand but later nullified by the supreme court’s contentious 2010 Citizens United ruling). The Justices didn't turn 'liberal.' They were often very conservative regarding business decisions but they tended to move to the middle on social issues, i.e., they tended to go with where the society was heading when the issues reached the court. The conservatives' alliance with the right wing theocrats pretending to represent all Christians brought them to Leo.

Chris, I think you omitted a very crucial piece of this story: the enormous influence of the rabid, malignant ultra-right wing Catholics. You did a great job on this story - that few have had the bravery to make public. Please consider speaking out about this extremist, medieval religious infection. Thank you! Sincerely, LTB, age 77)

The problem conservatives really had to solve was not that their chosen justices weren't voting the way they expected. The problem was that their beliefs were _(and are)_ abhorrent to both justice and reason. "Afflict the afflicted and comfort the comfortable" is no reasonable person's view of the law, but that's what we've currently got for "conservative" beliefs.

This painting makes me sick everytime I see it. Clarence sitting there as if his company is wanted. If he weren't a supreme court justice none of these men would give home the time of day. Do you think he knows this? Would he care if he did know? How much enjoyment can be derived from the company of people who don't even care anything about you, except for the wealth and power you can afford them?!

Harlan Crowe even said it recently. He was asked if he'd be friends with Thomas if he wasn't an SC justice and he said he didn't know, maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't. How tepid is that? If he LIKED the guy, as in being a real friend, he'd say, "Yeah, he's got a great sense of humour," or whatever. Clearly it's just the position he wants to be friends with, not the man.

That’s why ppl always said we shouldn’t worry about SCOTUS appointments because they won’t always vote based on who appointed them. That’s what irritated Leo. So he just decided to corrupt the courts, then looks at politics.

Chris, to your point @2:55 ... that is EXACTLY how SCOTUS was supposed to work - regardless of their ideology at the time, the Justices were supposed to be fair and balanced !!!!! The Supreme Court today is in no way like the court of old, it has truly lost it's way !

I realized the cops and courts were corrupt in 1976 when I got out of the military. I was offered a job as a cop in a little backwater town in Ohio which I soon discovered was corrupt to the core. As disillusioned about law enforcement as I was I still didn't think that the corruption lead to or was emanating from the supreme court. Now I know I was right and wrong all along. Too bad I was.

Hayes you are onto something, there is a similar organisation for Neo liberal economics called the "Mont Pelerin Society (MPS) is an international organization composed of economists, philosophers, historians, intellectuals and business leaders.[2] The members see the MPS as an effort to interpret in modern terms the fundamental principles of economic society as expressed by classical Western economists, political scientists and philosophers. Its founders included Friedrich Hayek, Frank Knight, Karl Popper, Ludwig von Mises, George Stigler and Milton Friedman.[2] The society advocates freedom of expression, free market economic policies and the political values of an open society. Further, the society seeks to discover ways in which the private sector can replace many functions currently provided by government entities." Wikipedia

This is the very reason why A Code of Ethics is necessary and a legitimate Oversight Board to investigate failures to make disclosures, the breaking of established laws by Justices, investigations of dark money/favor, the investigation of grooming of Justices. Also, any violations of law or ethics set results in automatic impeachment or resignation. A set term needs to be in place. Also, an extension (this has been done before). Something drastic has to be done because between the extremism of the right, the elimination of Rights, the fascism, the force of personal beliefs and religion upon the majority, the silencing of the voice of the majority, the voter suppression and extreme gerrymandering by these Republicans are definitely playing a great part in the destruction/elimination of true democracy. Another country will not destroy America, it's the Americans within that will do it. They will certainly cause a divide within this country so tremendous that countries like China and North Korea will easily be able to take over and control America. FACT: A house so divided cannot stand. There is only so much you can force down Americans throats before they are sure to turn on you. Americans defend their freedom, rights and liberties and pursuit of happiness. Taking these things away will cause a contemp that will surely destroy this country.
